Mallard Creek All American Marquez North out for the season

Mallard Creek will have to play Hough for the I-Meck 4A championship Friday and will have to go into the playoffs without the state's top ranked player.

Mavericks running back/receiver Marquez North, a preseason All-American, will miss the remainder of the season after surgery on his shoulder this week, Mallard Creek coach Mike Palmieri told the Observer Wednesday night.

North informed Palmieri that he would be having surgery on Sunday. Palmieri said it's a lingering issue with North's shoulder and not something that happened in a recent game.

"This is something he's had issues with," Palmieri said. "He didn't miss any games. It's a lingering thing. We'll be alright. We've got a bunch of good players. We'll be fine. Of course, this hurts a little bit. But we're confident in what we've got."

North, a 6-4, 220-pound senior, has 20 catches for 322 yards and seven touchdowns. He's also rushed 45 times for 642 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Mallard Creek (8-1, 6-0) is ranked No. 3 in the Observer's Sweet 16. The Mavericks, who have won eight straight games, will play at No. 11 Hough (9-1, 6-0) Friday in the conference championship game. Hough has won nine straight games.

North visited Florida and Tennessee this month. He has offers from both schools as well as about 20 other SEC, ACC and Big 10 schools. Rivals ranks North the No. 28 recruit in the nation, regardless of position. He is the top ranked recruit in the Carolinas by many publications, including the Observer.

No offense but no crew of officials decides the outcome of a game. They may make a mistake or two but thats why they play 48 minutes of football. The better team will win.....
