Friday's Prep Basketball Scores, Heroes, Roundup

Elevator
UP, Emry Tsitouris, Parkwood girls: Monroe-area girls star averaging 23 points and 13 rebounds. Her team is 4-0.

UP, Jennifer Baker, North Mecklenburg girls:
Baker won her 100th career game Friday.

UP, Cuthbertson girls: beat Olympic 65-49 to win the Blue Division championship at the Clover (S.C.) Optimist tournament. Taylor Helms had 17, Mara Arnold had 15 and Morgan Carlson had 13 for Cuthbertson (4-1).

UP, Northside Christian: boys are 95-6 over the past four seasons under coach Byron Dinkins. Northside will try to reach a fourth straight state final this season.

Ezinne Mbamalu, Lake Norman Charter: Impressive season debut for Winthrop recruit: 15 points, 17 rebounds in 61-39 win over Mooresville.

Janelle Bailey, Providence Day girls: 24 points, 11 rebounds in a 56-39 win over South Meck at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge at Providence Day Friday.

Friday's Top Boys Performers

C.J. Bryce, North Mecklenburg: 11 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals in 88-41 win over Mooresville.

Chris Bridges, Freedom:
Game-high 20 points for Patriots (2-0) in easy 90-45 win over Draughn.

Lucas Johnson, Kennedy Charter: 23 points in a 69-47 loss to Oldsmar (Fla.) Christian. Oldsmar held Kennedy Charter star Che’ Bob to eight points. Bob came into the game averaging 30 points per game, fifth in the nation.

Malik McCormick, Lake Norman Charter:
29 points, six rebounds in a overtime loss to Cox Mill at the Holden Challenge at North Mecklenburg.

Luke Maye, Hough: 29 points, a game-high, in a 58-54 win over Gaston Day at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge.

Grant Williams, Providence Day: 17 points, five rebounds in a 58-46 win over Independence. Williams also had several big blocks in the fourth quarter.


Holden Challenge

Lake Norman Charter girls 61, Mooresville 39: Ezinne Mbamalu had 15 points, 17 rebounds, six steals and four blocks and teammate Hannah Gaskins chipped in for 14 points and six rebounds in her first varsity game. Lake Norman Charter (1-0) advanced to Saturday’s Holden Classic Final at North Mecklenburg.

North Mecklenburg girls 60, Cox Mill 32: North Meck grabbed a 36-10 halftime lead and cruised to the finals of the Holden Classic at North Meck. Destiny Barrino led the Vikings with 13 points.

Cox Mill 58, Lake Norman Charter 54: Malik McCormick scored 29 points and six rebounds for Lake Norman Charter but his team lost by four in overtime, being outscored 6-2.

North Mecklenburg 88, Mooresville 41: North Mecklenburg (4-0) continued a trend of blowouts in the early season. The Vikings, No. 9 in the Observer’s Sweet 16 poll, won their first three games by an average of 40 points. Friday, North Meck led 29-7 after the first quarter and 50-23 at half.  Taj  Middleton had 13 points for the Vikings and Davion Mintz added seven points, five asists and two steals.

Friday's Roundup

Hough 58, Gaston Day 54: Hough, No. 2 in the Observer's Sweet 16, led 30-23 at halftime and held on to win. Gaston Day, which got 23 points from point guard Trevor Anderson and 19 from shooting guard Derek McKnight, nearly pulled off the upset, outscoring Hough 31-26 in the second half.

Providence Day girls 56, South Meck 39:
Freshman Janelle Bailey had 24 points and senior Jatarie White had 21 for the Chargers (5-0). Providence Day limited South Meck to only 13 points in the first half.

Freedom 90, Draughn 45: Freedom led 24-7 after the first quarter and spurted to a 46-24 halftime lead against their Burke County rivals. Jeron Hemphill had 17 points and Khris Gardin had 11. Kasen Wilson and Gabe Logan ha 10 each for Freedom (2-0), which is No. 13 in the Observer's Sweet 16 poll.

Berry 52, Zion Lutheran (Fla.) 49:
Berry outscored Zion Lutheran 21-4 in the third quarter to break open a close game and then held on in the fourth quarter to win. Zion Lutheran outscored Berry 17-8 in the final eight minutes at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge at Providence Day.
