Garinger soccer rallies to beat Porter Ridge, stay unbeaten

Garinger High's soccer team, ranked No. 2 in the Observer's Sweet 16 poll, kept its unbeaten season alive with a huge rally in Union County Wednesday night.

The Wildcats (18-0, 9-0 Southwestern 4A) beat Porter Ridge 3-2 after trailing 2-0 at halftime on the road.

Tresor Mbuyu, who leads the Observer's coverage area in scoring, scored the game-winning point with less than one minute to play.

Mbuyu entered the game with 27 goals, two ahead of teammate Hussein Arsene.

Porter Ridge (12-5-1, 4-3) had a five-game win streak snapped.

Garinger plays Independence at home Oct. 14 and has big games remaining with Sweet 16 No. 5 Charlotte Catholic Oct. 19 and a potential Southwestern 4A championship game with Myers Park Oct. 21.

Both of those matches are on the road.
