Thursday night's prep football scores, heroes; Friday's schedule


UP, West Meck:
Hawks are 4-0 for the first time since 2004 after beating Independence for the first time in 26 years. It was arguably the Hawks’ biggest win since 1988 when West Meck beat 1987 N.C. 4A finalist Harding (3-0) and 1988 N.C. 4A state finalist West Charlotte (13-3) in the same season.

UP, Providence:
beat Myers Park for the eighth time in nine meetings Thursday.

UP, Deion Washington, Independence:
96-yard kickoff return and 65-yard punt return against West Mecklenburg Thursday.

UP, Spencer Owens, Darius Means, Olympic:
Combined for seven touchdowns in Trojans 69-20 win over Hopewell. Owens had three rushing touchdowns. Means had three touchdowns catches from QB Rod Tinsley and a 69-yard punt return.

Thursday’s Top Performers

David Allen, East Meck:
Passed for 300 yards, two touchdowns against Harding. He completed 18-of-37 passes.

Daniel Jones, Charlotte Latin:
Completed 16-of-31 passes for 352 yards and three touchdowns in 35-25 win over Raleigh Ravenscroft. Teammate Melvin Rouse had two interceptions and a 72-yard punt return for a score. He finished with 169 total return yards.

Brittain King-McKay, Harding:
10 carries for 163 yards and a touchdown in the Rams’ 48-28 win over East Meck. He added three catches for 61 yards and another score. He also had a 56-yard interception return for another score.

Brian Mattar, Providence:
Junior running back had eight carries for 133 yards and two touchdowns, all in the second half, in a win over rival Myers Park. He had scoring runs of 42- and 77-yards. Myers Park’s Jaquavion Alexander rushed 23 times for 202 yards.

Tahleik Pauling, West Mecklenburg:
game-sealing intereception deep in Hawks’ territory to polish off 40-33 upset win at Independence.

Jarrick Robbins, Porter Ridge:
10 rushes, 109 yards, three scores in 50-10 win at South Meck. QB Isaiah Hicklin was 13-for-21 for 237 yards and a score. Hicklin rushed for another.

Rod Tinsley, Olympic: QB was 5-of-9 for 153 yards and three touchdowns in 69-20 win at Hopewell. Issac Garcia rushed 17 times for 165 yards and two scores. Darius Means had four catches for 143 yards and three touhdowns. Means also had a 69-yard punt return for a score.

Shaun Wilson, West Mecklenburg: Ran for 208 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winning score with 2:01 left, as the 13th-ranked Hawks beat No. 4 Independence 40-33.

Thursday’s Roundup

Charlotte Country Day 52, Buford 0:
Country Day QBs Cole Bloomer and Robert Tate had big games in the easy win in South Carolina as Country Day won just four days after a tough 21-20 loss to rival Charlotte Catholic. Bloomer was 9-for-9 for 131 yards and two scores; Tate was 5-for-6 for 106 yards and another score. Thomas Jackson caught four passes for 103 yards and three scores. Country Day ran out to a 35-0 halftime lead and cruised.

Ardrey Kell 24, Cuthbertson 7: Ardrey Kell hit Cuthbertson with a couple big plays to help spark the road win. The Knights opened the scoring with a 53-yard pass and Josh German’s 64-yard run later gave Ardrey Kell a 17-0 lead it would not relinquish. Ardrey Kell, which lost its season-opener 24-7 to Weddington, has now won three in a row. Ardrey Kell has beaten Myers Park, Marvin Ridge and now Cuthbertson. Ardrey Kell (3-1) has a huge SoMeck 8 conference opening game next week at Waddell against unbeaten West Meck (4-0).

Charlotte Latin 35, Raleigh Ravenscroft 25: Latin got a big road win in a game that was delayed in the first half by lightning. Latin led 28-10 at halftime. The Hawks completed 18-of-34 passes for 400 yards and rushed for 60 more. Ravenscroft finished with 138 yards rushing and 207 passing.

Vance beat Garinger 71-0 Thursday, setting a school-record for points.

Three of Ardrey Kell’s first four opponents are from Union County: Weddington, Marvin Ridge and Cuthbertson.

62: Olympic scored 62 points in the first three quarters of a 69-20 win over Hopewell Thursday.
