Walker Barbee's big hit lifts West Stanly to NCHSAA 2A softball crown

West Stanly lost to South Granville in the 1996 and ’98 NCHSAA state softball championships.

Walker Barbee made sure that didn’t happen in 2013.

Barbee’s hit up the middle drove in two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Saturday, lifting West Stanly to an emotional 4-3 win over South Granville in the 2A state championship game.

Savannah Blalock of West Stanly was named tournament MVP. She pitched a complete game in Friday’s 8-5 win. That win snapped South Granville’s 18-game win streak. Saturday, Blalock allowed four hits, pitching the complete game.

West Stanly (28-4) was in the finals for the first time since 2003.
