Charlotte Catholic's Elijah Hood apologizes for "Roll Toilet"

Charlotte Catholic All-America football player Elijah Hood got a swift lesson about the strength of social media and the spotlight that recruiting can put on top high school athletes Tuesday night.

Hood, a 6-foot-1, 220-pound junior, committed to Notre Dame in April. He was the Observer's offensive player of the year in 2012, when he rushed for a Mecklenburg County record 3,309 yards and a record 48 touchdowns.

Tuesday night, Hood started a firestorm after he downloaded a social media app on his smartphone called Vine. It lets users create short videos that repeat themselves over and over when watched.

As a joke, Hood made a Vine video he called "Roll Toilet." In it, he showed a stack of recruiting letters he'd gotten from Alabama and Tide coach Nick Saban. Next, he held an envelope from one of the letters above the toilet and flushed it down.

As he did, Hood said "Roll Toilet," a parody on the famous "Roll Tide" chant from Alabama fans.

"I made the video right before I went to bed," Hood said. "I was like, 'What am I gonna do for my first Vine? I said, 'let me think of something.'"

Hood's attempt at humor was all over social media quickly Tuesday night, landing on nationwide recruiting sites and message boards. Hood, who has a huge sense of humor, said he was simply having a little fun and making a joke, but now understands how when you become a top level national recruit, as he has, your audience grows exponentially.

It's not just you tweeting to your buddies anymore.

"I want to apologize," he said. "It was an attempt at humor. I have no disdain or disrespect for their program (at Alabama). It was just a joke. It's a privilege to be a Division I athlete, of course. It was something that was a joke and I've got to put it behind me now."

Hood said he knew as soon as posted the video that things were spreading quickly.

"It was getting everywhere Tuesday night and I woke up this morning and it was on ESPN," he said. "I'm like, 'Oh great. It's really, really gotten out of hand. It got pretty big pretty fast."

Hood said in interviews, he's always been guarded about his comments, particularly when talking about other schools or opponents, but says he'll now apply that same discretion to social media. He's removed the Vine video post.

"I learned a little lesson," he said. "Things can blow up pretty quickly. That's what happens. I already am conscious about posting things but honestly, it was a joke and some people don't have the same sense of humor I guess."

Hood said the tweet and Vine post had led to a few nasty replies from Crimson Tide fans.

"Of course, that goes with college," he said. "It's all love. It doesn't get to me. People will love their program and be fanatical and I love that. It shows me the fiery fan bases and all that. That's what you play football for, for the big time fan bases and the hate and the love and all that together. Ultimately, you've gotta be ready to walk the walk if you're gonna talk the talk. I'm ready for that."

The other thing Hood is ready for is to try to help recruits get to Notre Dame. He's become the school's southern based recruiting coordinator of sorts. He asks the coaches about players they're interested in and combs recruiting sites to find top athletes who are interested in the Fighting Irish. Then Hood reaches out to them via social media to get their contact info. And then he sells Notre Dame himself.

"I try to holler at kids and get them to come," he said. "I'm doing this on social media and talking to them, trying to get familiar with them. The more familiar they are with you and your program the better. The recruits care about who they're going to be with when they're at the university. I just try to introduce myself to them."

So Elijah Hood will keep on tweeting, but he'll just be a little more careful about what he says.

What is it about Charlotte players and Alabama? Didn't Ferguson also diss them? Sure makes good bulletin board material

Hey, it's a joke.

Get over it.

I'm from Alabama and I've heard much worse from 'Bama fans about Auburn.

He's actually a great kid who made a silly (albeit relatively funny...) joke. I mean come on - you think Nick Saban can't handle a little barb from a 17 year old kid?

Just think about what you were doing at 17 and be glad everything you said and did wasn't posted all over the internet every time you turned around. I know I am...

UNC and Duke folks can really get ugly if they wanted to. I have to say that was funny Hood. You should have gone to UNC, who will beat ND when ND comes to play in the ACC

Anonymous said...

Maybe now that he's made it clear he's committed, these coaches will stop hounding him with notes every week trying to change his mind!

He's excited about school. It was funny. BFD. People will get their panties in a wad about anything.

15 NCAA Championships !!!!

Sonny boy you are not good enough to be a member of the Crimson Tide !!!
We reject RBs twice as good as you.

Only a chosen few make the grade and we are so happy our AD told your great heroic Newton crook to hit the fucking road when he tried to solicit a price tag of 50,000 a month to play one semester.
We sent him to All Burn U ... a loser school. Go try to extort them not BAMA !!!!

GO BAMA !!!

GO RED TIDE !!!

Um, did you read? Apparently he is everything that Bama wants. Otherwise, why is Nick bothering him after being told by Hood several times that he is not interested in Bama becasue they do not have the accademic standards he is seeking?

class class class. what kind of education are you giving these kids, Charlotte Catholic???

Anonymous said...

Hey you idiot who said class class class.. Grow up... You probably couldnt even pass a class class class at Catholic.. What a jerk... As for the jerk who said Hood couldnt even play for Bama. They recruited him DUMB IDIOT...

It was just a joke. People get so bent out of shape so easily anymore. Grow some skin people.

Good move, Elijah. Alabama kills trees, so you fire back by flushing its remnants down the toilet!

Alabama fans always attempt to remain anonymous...it's only because they can't even spell their names.

Did this guy not watch the National Championship?

Cindy McGuire said...

I love it!!! WAR EAGLE! The young man didn't kill any trees while committing ecoterrorism!

Anonymous said...

It is irrelevant whether he watched the NC or if BAMA won the NC. He's being recruited by BAMA. He's not interested in BAMA. He thinks that BAMA or BAMA's coaches are for the toilet. Therefore, he's entitled to his thoughts, no matter who, what, when, where, and how BAMA is. Additionally, CCHS has no bearing on his actions away from school. Last, it's a joke. So those who are offended need to find another hobby.

Wow - the Alabama fan certainly doesn't make me want to pull for them this year. Sadly, he's pretty reflective of my encounters with fans of that school. Ole Miss, Auburn, UNC, Va Tech, and Notre Dame all seem to impress me more and more each time I visit their campuses. Elijah is in for a treat at Notre Dame! What a special place.

Anonymous said...

what kind of education did he get at Charlotte Catholic? One good enough to get him in Notre Dame.. That ain't too shabby compared to the 2.6 that will get you into all the SEC schools but Vandy.

Elijah is a first class kid who excels in the class room and participates in various philanthropic activities in the community. There is news of way more importance out there and the media chooses to harp on a kid making a joke among-st friends. Please get back to work if you have jobs, as my break is now over and I must.

This kid might need to call Everett Golson & Eddie Vanderdoes both 5 Star athletes who have bailed on Notre Dame. He should re-open his recruiting! I really don't see him as a good fit at ND.

Anonymous said...

People think Bo Scarborough is going to Alabama but he was in my history class at Northridge H.S. and told me he was going to SCLSU to play for the Mud Dogs. With his talent, they should be playing in the Bourbon Bowl in no time.

Anonymous said...

For the comment about UNC beating ND, you have a great sense of humor or have some serious mental problems.

Anonymous said...

FYI, Golson didn't bail-he was suspended because ND actually HAS things called academic standards. (Meaning you Can't get caught cheating and still play ball)

The wussification of America continues. We have to apologize for everything we do.

The fact he was contacted by Saban is somewhat of an honor and tells anyone Nick thought enought to recruit him, but I personally am tired of Bamas arrogant fan base.

Anonymous said...

he's just upset because we didn't even offer him a scholarship...a chance to be a national champion...and a chance to be groomed into a 1st round NFL draft pick. Is immaturity shows...which is something Saban will not tolerate. I'm glad we chose not to offer this overrated brat. He'd be the 6th or 7th back on the depth chart in Tuscaloosa...real talk.

to the Anonymous post on June 5 at 1:11 PM:
1) 15 NC's? Does that include the Ladies Home Journal NC in 1965? Or the claim of a NC with 2 losses in 1941? You guys seem to claim a lot of ridiculous NC's so I thought I'd check in case you missed one or more
2) "only a chosen few make the grade": although I know you are referring to football grade, it's a funny contrast to the fact the UA is one of the easiest southern schools to academically qualify for based on many local kids having been rejected by the likes of UNC, NC State, USC, Clemson, UGA, Auburn, and Ole Miss
3) Cam was never recruited or considered by Alabama. Not because, as you are about to say, he couldn't "make the grade" but because they, like the majority of the schools, weren't looking at him; therefore, he was not "sent" anywhere by Alabama but I realize that it makes a good story for you and your school's ego
4) after an extensive investigation with tremendous attention given via the lynch mob of ESPN, NY Times, and other media outlets, the NCAA did not find ANY violations or concerns with Auburn Athletics, football or otherwise; to the contrary, they issued a unique statement noting Auburn's complete cooperation and innocence
of all allegations
5) your Auburn obsession is noteworthy: how do you turn an article about a Charlotte Catholic player into anything to do with the Auburn/Alabama rivalry
6) you must be a bandwagon fan. I have been following Alabama football for 5 decades and have never heard it referred to as "red tide"; perhaps you mean "crimson tide"; a little slow on the uptake are we?

Hood picked ND for academic standards.

ND>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>...>>>>>>>>Bama

in that area. He is one of the few recruits in this country that looked at a school in all aspects not just the football program.

You really should meet the kid before you call him a brat. He is probably one of the smartest and kindest kids you will ever meet.

He flushed a letter from your school down the toilet OH NOEZ!!!!1!1

It's not like he poisoned a bunch of trees that are stepped in tradition or anything like that...oh wait....

yea yea yea ... we know the newton slop flop ...

the other real problem was how fat hog richardson and the local observer completely ditched chris leak after florida graduation who played at independence winning 3 4a state titles breaking every record in the book and where 7 straight 4a titles were won with 109 consecutive games under tommy knotts ...

leak also won an ncaa title at florida in his stellar 4 years of academic excellence and placed 2nd for the heisman ...

this is crazy ...

leak was national high school player of the year in 2003 ...

newton couldnt make county or conference honorable mention ... and never played in or won a high school playoff game

why was chris leak not forced on the lowly panthers by the observer?
they passed on another great gator qb tebow who won 2 ncaa titles and heisman plus excellent grades and utmost integrity

make no mistake that leak or tebow would have NEVER used young children or students for photo opt rehabs promoted by the observer and its pro sports writers who couldnt get a job cleaning the bus station restrooms on east trade

thank you great gator qbs leak and tebow who have been dumped on big time by the nfl and local hogface owner and observer disturber rats ... you are both too good and tops on quality for that pig outfit ...

http://blogs.charlotte.com/tom_talks/2013/06/ncaa-should-pay-football-and-mens-basketball-players.html

There he goes again. Dumbazz Soreheadsen proves once again in all his ignorance and stupidity why he is the biggest piece at the Daily Planet, no small feat. Actually they are all tied for last.

The only reason sports writers exist is they can do nothing else. They cant even change a flat and a main factor why 300 million tv cable rates in America are to the fucking moon with everything else to pay for all this pro sports BS who make 100s of billions overall and cost the masses trillions with greedy useless athletes and their union extortionists.

Soreheadsen criminalizing NCAA laws plagued with fraud and corruption for years making athletes employees of the college is laughable. It already costs over a million for every athlete on scholarship. Who does he think pays the bill? Check the mirror taxpayers. Colleges are equally the blame.

Why not get all these dumbazzes who cant half spell their own names out of college? NCAA should outlaw sports scholarships. Allow them all to try out for pro right out of high school. That will eliminate 99%. Create the minors like baseball or go to work at McDonalds or Bojangles.

Dumbazz Soreheadsen will next be promoting high school and Pop Warner pay. Typical idiot retarded clueless sportswriter. A good S.A.W. would the cure.

Thats funny. These sportwriters should have been comics.

Newton who SUCKED in high school with a laughable pitiful 11-11 record before going on a scam rampage and conned into the pros using hog head owner JR who just scammed 90 million off taxpayers too. Like player like owner?

Tightwad Slop raked in 26 million with endorsements in 2012 and throwing chump change at this staged rehab event using local high schools he is conning? Please. RIPOFF.

Using innocent high school student athletes in this way for self rehab is worth MILLIONS !!!!!

EL CHEAPO BETTER PAY THESE SCHOOLS
THEIR WORTH !!!!!!! A couple thousand for all this is chump change. ...

At least FATBOY Richardson did give 10 million to UNCC 49er football and donated 25 million earlier on.

Time for this pretender qb to ANTE UP and stop cheating high school students too !!!!!!!!!

dang.. yo Super ... no diss from DubC (thats West Charlotte for outsiders) but it would be real nice of you to shoot a nice big hefty check made out to the Lions football program for a small 4-5 million? please? pretty please?

As of late our struggling program needs an infusion and as you may not know we have until recently been the standard of excellence in this city for many decades.

Admittedly in our heyday you would have been 3rd team but thats how good we were.

From a fellow Lion since we know Westlake were the Lions, we would appreciate a big pfat check to help us out.
That 5 million is fully tax deductible too. We know we can count on you of all people. This will put us back on top again.

Stay chill big dawg ... We will be waiting and checking the mailbox ...
