Hopewell coach David Johnson leaving for Cuthbertson head football job

Hopewell football coach David Johnson has resigned to take the vacant job at Cuthbertson High in Union County, Hopewell athletics director Jamie Billings told the Observer.

Cuthbertson football coach Michael Roark resigned last month. Roark was 16-31 in three seasons.

Union County athletics director Doug Jones said the county has four football openings at Cuthbertson, Porter Ridge, Marvin Ridge and Sun Valley. Jones said he cannot comment on any of them until paperwork is completed.

Johnson, who was unavailable for comment, was hired at Hopewell in July 2011. He was 26 at the time. Johnson had been offensive coordinator at Berry. He became Hopewell’s third coach, following Mike Bradley and Chris Rust.

In two seasons, Johnson’s teams were 5-7 and 4-6. Hopewell’s next coach will try to produce the school first winning season since 2010 and just the second in six years. Rust’s 2008 and 2010 teams were 8-5.

How unprofessional is it for Hopewell's athletic director to link this to the press before it was announced? Wow!! As a spectator I am interested to see what Hopewell will be able to do without Johnson's offense next year.
