Davidson Day QB Will Grier trims college list to five

Davidson Day's record setting quarterback Will Grier, a junior, has narrowed his potential list of college choices.

Grier said Florida is the leader followed by, in order, UNC, Tennessee, N.C. State and Oregon.

Here's some thoughts I offered up on Grier last week after he led his team to a second straight state title

Davidson Day’s Will Grier finished his junior season with 5,609 yards passing. No N.C. quarterback has ever thrown for as many. No N.C. quarterback has ever thrown for 68 touchdown passes like Grier did, either.

Nationally, only three QBs have thrown for more yards in one year, and only three have thrown for more touchdowns. Grier’s records might not be entered into the national or N.C. High School Athletic Association state record books because he plays for a private school.

There’s also a push to discredit him for the competition he plays against. I’ve seen public school athletes run up incredible numbers against worse competition and their records are proudly listed in the record books. But I’d also love to see what Grier could do playing for, say, Butler, against, say, Mallard Creek – or vice versa. I’d love to see him play at a big private school, like Charlotte Latin where his father played, playing against the stiff competition the Hawks face.

But he’s at the school his family has chosen for him, and all I can tell you about him is that I think he’s the real thing. His multiple BCS college offers prove it, and I’ve had three high school coaches tell me – this year – that he’s among the best they’ve ever seen.

Friday night, after Grier’s 315-yard, four-touchdown performance in a state final win at Arden’s Christ School, Christ School coach Mark Monroe had this to say about Grier:

“I’ve been coaching for a long time, and he’s the best quarterback I’ve seen.”

Hate to see that he wont follow his father's footsteps at ECU. The Pirates sure do put more QB's in the NFL than UNC.

Who cares! Butler would kill Davidson day. Please find something else to fill the sports section with. He should be headed to college in the fall, instead he stays one more year to beat up on weak teams! Can't wait to see him against a real defense. He will choose UNC as they are in the weakest conference of his 5 choices.

who cares about butler. who cares about you? get back to your couch. wait, you don't get off the couch.

This kid is the second coming of Braden Hanson. Great numbers against TERRIBLE competition. Waste of a scholarship.

Go Gators!! Clearly none of these bozos have seen him play!

I guess the coaches at Florida, the #3 ranked team in the country, are not good evaluators of talent. What an idiot. Blah, blah f'n blah.

The fact that people are spending time jabbering back and forth about a HIGH SCHOOL football player is hysterical. Ya'll all need something to do. The fact that the purpose of college is the education part is apparently lost on you all and sadly, many student athletes...mainly because the newspaper follows their every move with baited breath and local yokels spend their minutes arguing over it.

And yes, I read the story--mainly because I was struck by the fact that this is a story and my perverse sense of humor won out, thus I opened the link...ya'll didn't disappoint!

Who let the woman on the message board (8:06pm). Thanks for the lecture

Langston-

If you want to see how he'd do for Latin, look and see how he did against Country Day and Providence Day this year. He lost and threw for about 200 yards under his average in every other game.

Come on Langston I am sure most are happy for the kid but there are hundreds of players and stories in the readership area how about a little more effort....??????

Put the hype on this kid to bed.Churc league football.

It is my understanding that Will Grier should be a freshman in college THIS YEAR. . .isn't that in some waiting cheating? Going to hold my son back a couple of years and see what he does.

Anonymous said...

your understanding is wrong. so before you decide to post a stupid comment get your facts straight. He'd be the youngest freshman in the country. You are an idiot. your friends are idiots and your jealousy is in line with your way of life. It's exciting news for those of us who enjoy not only seeing this young man thrive but all young student athletes thrive... Save for a few jealous losers in the north side of town. Sorry your school, team,or your kid is not newsworthy. Probably has something to do with your anger issues.

^^^^there is reason DD is not eligible for the sweet 16 poll. What is it again? "They can't beat any real teams? good guess and accurate, but not the reason. I am sure Langston would put them in there any way.

No. The reason is because they re-class high school kids. Yes that's right. They take kids that are juniors and hold them back for athletic purposes.

So Dad picks the offense, call the plays, schedules the opponents, decides how many years the kid will play high school ball and then his cronies get their feelings hurt when the kid gets criticized? The one thing he can't control. Sorry about that.

Maybe now that the coach has gotten his son the records and scholarship, someone else can play QB when they are up 50 on an all girls team next year.

Ahhh, another sad daddy. Daddy this ,daddy that. Daddy is the reason he gets a scholarship. Daddy is the reason they score so many points. Daddy doesn't schedule any good teams. Daddy just cares about records. Daddy daddy daddy. Maybe daddy can schedule butler every week next year. Because butler plays butler every week. So sad. No good players could ever come from a private school. No way. And sure, the Gatorade player of the year, all American and top 5 qb in America is only receiving attention because of daddy. You lost your chance buddy. Don't take it out on others that make a difference in this world.

It is amazing how dumb most of the ppl on here are, i dont care how bad the kids competition was he threw for over 5k yards and 68 tds and won the state title!! He has pretty good form and has some good pace on the ball.. also pretty accurate. He can move pretty quickly as well.. It is not a mistake that he was NC gatorade player of the year and is ranked as a 4 star by ESPN, SCOUT, RIVALS, and 247 Sports... ya know the ppl who actually evaluate kids on a daily basis. OH and he is going to headed to Florida arguable one of the best teams in the nation this year with a bright young coaching staff... pretty sure they know what they are doing more than any of you tards. That is all.. Good day mate!
