Observer Sweet 16 poll: Concord tumbles, East Lincoln jumps in

After one week out of the Sweet 16, unbeaten East Lincoln rejoined the poll this week.

The Mustangs (8-0) beat rival West Lincoln 40-20 Friday, playing without star quarterback Garrett Young, who suffered a knee injury against Lincolnton one game previous. Young was averaging more than 300 yards per game.

Young’s replacement, freshman Chaz Surratt, completed 7-of-14 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns. He ran for a team-best 91 yards and one touchdown on 10 rushing attempts.

East Lincoln, which ranks No. 15, has a big game Friday in Mecklenburg County at Lake Norman Charter (7-0). Lake Norman Charter is averaging 50 points per game.

Elsewhere there wasn’t much movement in the poll. The top five spots stayed the same with Butler at No. 1.

Concord fell from No. 10 to No. 16 after an upset loss, 28-21 to Cox Mill. Cox Mill (5-3) rolled up nearly 400 yards of offense and punted just once. Concord played without starting running back Rocky Reid, who sat out with an ankle injury..

This poll is a joke!!!!

Crest pull out the win at the end of the game over a North Gaston team that hasn't won a conference game since 2007 and are still ranked 6th.....No Way!!

Crest has one loss, got lucky against NORTH GASTON, and it took an overtime win to beat Ashbrook.

Yet, undefeated South Point handles Ashbrook and is cruising through the conference, and still ranks 2 spots behind Crest.

Stupid poll.

Hough was ranked higher last week and blew out WC and they dropped on the pole? Does not make sense.

If you guys want this poll to be anything other than something that fans come in a complain about week after week, you need to have some consistency in how you guys rank teams. The fact that E. Lincoln falls out one week after a victory, then magically reappears at 15 the next, combined with the musical chairs going on between Catholic, Brown, Crest, and South Point all just lowers the credibility of it. At least the AP polls behave predictably. You can argue if a top 25 poll actually identifies the best 25 teams in the country regardless of reputation, but everyone understands what it represents because it is consistent, week after week, year after year. This poll is so fickle its giving us whiplash. Stabilize the rankings using some consistent basis, and we quit complaining. Ranking one-loss teams higher than no-loss teams just because you guys "think" the one-loss team is better, regardless of performance on the field, is pretty qualitative, and therefore, ripe for the fans to poke holes in its methodology. For example, on what basis do Crest and Catholic trade spots this week, considering both teams won their games? Shouldn't the team that was ranked higher last week still be ranked higher? And, that question doesn't even consider the fact that Crest almost got beat Friday night by a team that they should have man-handled, considering the rank you guys have assigned.

pssolfiUKarrenAre you serious about leaving Providence Day out of the mix? Lost two close games to two undefeated teams. Not much objectivity used in your poll!

Providence Day has been ranked twice, and managed to lose games both times. When they beat Davidson Day, they leapfrogged other teams who were already ranked and won. The Observer wants nothing more than for Providence Day to be ranked, but running the score up on Latin isn't that impressive, especially after Christian already did it. Also, Davidson Day doesn't look like nearly as good of a win after Country Day blew them out of the water, while taking the foot off the gas at halftime.

How are York (12 vote-points) and Country Day (15 vote-points) tied in this poll?

Anonymous said...

At least that Davidson Day garbage is over. Please dont waste any more space on them and save it for legitimate teams and players. Radford is so much better than Grier it is ridiculous. Grier is the product a system and a weak schedule. That is clear. At least all football dads know how to do it. Take over a program and sacrifice team football and you to can develop a "D1 prospect".

Providence would be in the poll if they had a coach............................................................

I agree with the Davidson Day post. However it is a waste commenting on a team that was massacred by the 12th ranked team in the poll. Save it for the stories they write about them after they beat another JV team. That is a better place for it.

Back to the Providence Day (5-2)argument....PD loses to South Point Belmont by 13 pts and to Porter Ridge by 10 pts; both away games....every other game has been a decisive win. AL Brown get BLOWN OUT by 35pts +/- by Porter Ridge yet they are still in the top 8; doesn't make much sense. I know the Sweet 16 is not an exact science but PD has played a tough a schedule as anyone in the county and absolutely deserves a top 16 ranking. When the season is all said and done they will be there....

Other than Liberty Christian, who good has Providence Day beat this year though? Country Day is undefeated, beat a highly ranked 3A team and languished at 15 and 16 until they beat Davidson Day, which inexplicably gave them a bounce.

Well, just remember that South Point, the 2nd best 3A team in the state, is only the 4th best 3A team in the area, so a win over them doesn't mean as much...

So by this logic, If PDS played Butler close, it would not count because they didn't win? They played South Point and Porter Ridge better than anyone else. That typically impacts your positon in a poll.

Not saying they should be ranked. But those performances along with a win over a very good LCA team should merit consideration and at least gives you an indication of if they are a competitve team or not.

Some people don't understand why a team lol R H Northwestern with 2 losses can be ranked high as #4when there are undefeated teams,Consider the level of competion,They loss to the #3 team in the country and a top 2 team in S C.Both games were decided late in the 4th qt

These idiots will have South Point dropping out of the poll next week because they won't win this Friday; SP has an OPEN week.
Langston and team haven't got a clue who the best team is; I'm not sure they even know what American football is; they are probably gauging this on futbol.
What Morons!

South Point hasn't lost in how long? They are flat our rolling teams. I don;t think they have scored less than 35 points. The only team that even gave them a run was Providence Day and that was for a half. How can they not get moved up. Ridiculous.

Anonymous said...

South Point has 18 straight conference wins. Last conference loss was in 2009. They also are on a 25 game regular season win streak, which dates back to 2010. That is, if I did my math correctly...

so im guessing everyone agrees south point has one heck of a good football team huh? love my old school..

Well, apparently the sports writers in the rest of the state think they're better than the sports writers in Charlotte.

Davidson Day got PUT IN THEIR PLACE by Country Day. It was clear Grier and the rest of that team had never faced a good team before. Country Day was up 42-7 in 3rd qt when they took their starters out and DD kept Grier in to throw another td against the scrubs for his stat book. So glad all the hype about these guys is done. They've proven yet again they have nothing for CD, PD, Christian, and Latin.
