Providence Day, Ardrey Kell jump into Observer Sweet 16 poll

Providence Day and Ardrey Kell join the Sweet 16 this week. Providence Day, actually, returns to the poll. The Chargers were ranked earlier in the season before a tough loss at No. 8 South Point.

Providence Day (3-1) plays a big game in two weeks at No. 3 Porter Ridge in Indian Trail. Porter Ridge coach Blair Hardin will play against his father’s team. Bruce Hardin coaches Providence Day. Providence Day plays at Liberty Christian (Va) Frday.

Porter Ridge narrowly beat the Chargers 10-7 in Charlotte last year.

Ardrey Kell held off Union County rival Weddington last week to improve to 3-0 for the season. That is the Knights’ best start since 2008. With a Southwestern 4A season-opening win against rival South Meck Friday, Ardrey Kell can set up one of the bigger games in recent school history with with Independence in two weeks.

I have no dog in this fight, but I am really curious as to how anybody at the Observer can justify Providence Day being ahead of Country Day. Didn't Country Day beat #6 Catholic at Cathoic? Providence Day has a loss, and as far as I can tell, their best win is against Davidson Day.

I don't have a dog in the fight, but Providence Day jumping Country Day is not logical, however it won't matter for long. Providence Day has the toughest schedule of any independent by far. They will either pull away from CCDS or drop out comletely in a few weeks.

Makes as much sense as Catholic being ranked ahead of a team that beat them. PDS and CCDS will get settled on the field. Apparently even settling it on the field with Catholic doesn't work inn this poll.

How about Vance being side by side with Indy who they beat by 35 points. You would think there would be some space between those 2 teams.

I wouldn't say they have the toughest by far, but it is a little tougher than Country Day's. Liberty Christian and Woodberry Forest are a wash, as those a typically the two strongest private schools in Virginia by a wide margin, though Woodberry may be down this year. Catholic falls somewhere between Porter Ridge and South Point, though that extra game give PD a tougher schedule. Of course, if they beat Porter Ridge, they might find themself with the same issues Country Day has since they beat teams like Crest and Northwestern.

As long as we agree that Butler is #1-- is there really anything else to talk about? oh yeah, Hood my be a good running back, but he's not the best ever. I would love for him to run against the mallard or butler or even south point or porter ridge.

I like that some of the independents are challenging themselves. Charlotte Christian has some good teams on their schedule as well this year. FYI. Wood berry Forest is ranked 133 in Virginia. Liberty Christian is 12th. They are not comparable this year.

Butler is the undeniable number 1 this year. Everyone else is playing for second this year. .

Actually, if you ask anybody in Virginia, they are comprable. Woodberry has played one game and lost despite giving up less than 200 yards and six first downs. They have two linebackers committed to Notre Dame. I will put good money on both Providence Day and Country Day losing. Liberty Christian seems to play Charlotte Christian every year, and beat them handily, and Woodberry used to play Christian, Latin, and Country Day fairly reguarly, and beat them fairly badly.

I asked. They said Liberty went undefeated last year. Won the state championship. Has all their key players back and are the class of the division this year. They also said they dominated Charlotte Christian and will beat PDS.

Ardrey Kell pretender or contender? gonna find out for sure in two weeks.......

Liberty beat WFS by 2 points last year when WFS fumbled on 2. WFS doesn't compete in state tournament because it overlaps with a rivalry game that is the oldest rivalry in the South. Liberty lost in finals 2 years ago to a team that lost to WFS by 30+ points. Trust me, they are equals.

Come on man. Look at the talent level Hood runs against.....He's a talent. The best ever? Come on Langston. Calm down. If i ever need someone to jump on a band wagon. I will give you a call.

Mr. Vamce Cougars.....Next time instead of listening to A Coach who's new to area brag about his team. Get in a car and go do some research. I guess that's why they call you Langston Worst...lol

Country Day should be ranked ahead of Catholic. If not your assuming that Catholic would beat them in a rematch.... Look at the last 7 times catholic has played country day they are 2-5.......With all due respect your not taking into account how better coached country day is then catholic. How else can you explain that witha school 1/3rd the size , team in the past that have at least 3 or 4 guys going both ways that they have won 71%of the time. Langston just wrote an article about how Elijah hood is the best running back he has seen I'm the county period. Then how how how does catholic not give him the ball more than 4 times in the second half when they played country day in the second half....answer. No balance poor passing game every year for the past 15 years. News alert to the catholic offensive coordinator you can signal plays in ...l and don't blow all your time outs because your ill prepared and don't practice a hurry up offense....county day coaches are worth at least a td in any game anywhere they play catholic......

On the whole voting thing. Catholic was ranked very high in the polls from the start and lost a close game to a team that was unranked. You're not going to see Catholic fall all the way out, via votes, nor are you gonna see Country Day zoom past other ranked teams.

Just the way it is. Just like if USC lost to an unranked team last week. USC might drop to 8 but the unranked team is not gonna jump over 24 others. It's kind of the way polls work.

Same with PD jumping over Catholic this week. We all voted and I added up the points. In a poll things like that happen. Good news is, as someone pointed out, that PDS and CCDS will get it on, on the field later this year. Methinks they'll play twice.

I understand what you are saying, and I think Catholic is one of the top 10 teams in the area, but you argument holds zero water. Didn't Arkansas just lose a game to an unranked team and fall out of the polls from the top 10?
As for Providence Day, my theory is that somebody who is voting is obsessed with being friends with Bruce Hardin. Either that, or they are trying to make the Porter Ridge-Providence Day game into a bigger thing than it is.

Hey Northwestern High in Rock Hill is for real and Just might be better than Butler : ) That's right,Consider this,They beat a nationally ranked Gaffeny team,Beat a top 10 team in SC Conway,Barely lost to Byrnes who is ranked 4th nationally by usatoday,Who has Butler played ? By the way it was said Byrnes stole that game : )

Anonymous said...

Northwestern is by far the best team in this area,Let Butler turn the ball over 4 times and allow Northwestern to get inside the 10 yard line ..lol Butler is very good but Northwestern is better : ) For real,Langston loves Butler but they are not the top dog around here,That prize go Northwestern : )

Anonymous said...

Let the South Pointe Coaches decide this. They scrimmaged Butler and play Northwestern in 2 weeks.

Anonymous said...

Start looking at the level of competition before You rank these teams,I agree Northwestern is at least the 2nd best considering who they have played and how well they played in there only lost,Byrnes the #4 team in the country scored the winning TD with just under 7 min left in the gm. They are better than R H South pointe too.I live here, I know,Langston do your home work : ) Come on Man : )

Coach Keith Wilkes get with the times Baby : ) That Offense May have worked in the past but that dog won't hunt against the Big Dogs here,Butler showed You that,Vance have the athletes to run a better offense,Your down by 30 still trying run the same thing,Like Bill Clinton said it's all in the Math,Your eating up the clock and it's working against Your team,Dah : ) Also I heard Your Big Mouth just fired up Butler even more .....lol Keep talkin : ) You was a hero in Winston Salem but until You win something here Your a zero : ) Good Luck

South Pointe Coaches ...Please..lol Butler drag Y'all around like a rag doll, Your living off past,Your not good as Mallard Creek this yr,Your program is top notch though : )

A voter could be obsessed with Bruce Hardin or they could look at the fact that PDS beat CCDS the last time they played and returned more starters. Of course, it won't matter after this week. PDS plays one of the top teams in Virginia and CCDS is taking the week off.

Anonymous said...

So what if they beat them last year, and return more starters? Who says that their starters didn't regress and Country Day's didn't improve. Based on this year alone, Country Day has been better thus far. I'd be very surprised if either team won in Virginia.

Giving big heads to teens only serves to create probs and ruin them espec the parents living out their fantazys thru their kids. Idiotic.
Look how the CO ruined Leak and Maddox and so many others with the SOS on a daily basis.

Let time run its course and report the correct true results after they occur not before.

Whoever that sports writer is
( Langley Worst )exemplifies typical CO ineptness in true Scott Tissue Joe Blow or Tom Sorehead style or any other know nothings.

Report the news. Dont make the news. Get in the real world off the soapbox off the crack and off the bandwagon or attend drug rehab.

In defense of Worst those who claim he gave Charlotte West High School pref treatment are lying or jealous and he didnt have to repeat the 2 bad scores to pander.

Just keep it real ... like the greatest tune ever recorded says.

Sure thats logical. The team that lost the year before and lost more starters to graduation usually is the better team the next year. Makes a lot of sense in an alternate universe.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, because new starters are never better than the old starters. For example, Providence Day was by far the worst team in the CISAA for the better part of the last decade, and then suddenly they were better.

Anonymous said...

Just like to point out that South Point is ranked #2 in the State 3A Poll, ahead of Crest and West Rowan. I'm curious CO, what's the reason for the disparity?

Anonymous said...

It's the Langston poll...not the states. : ) ...lol

Anonymous said...

I agree with whoever said CCDS is better. Last years starters were not very good. They may have lost some players, but fortunately for them very little talent graduated from that team.. They have likely improved by default.

Anonymous said...

South Point had some question marks at the start of the season, but they have appeared to have cleared them up. They are absolutely rolling teams right now. Look like one of the best teams in the area. Run an offense like Catholic in some ways, but are much tougher to defend because of how they use the QB.

Anonymous said...

Actually CCDS lost some very good players from last years team and some were two way players. Maybe they replaced them with better players, but that would be very difficult. You probably would not think so unless you were a parent of some Jr. that road the pine last year.
