In the school’s first two seasons, Hough High’s football team won six games.
This season, their third, the Huskies have already won four.
Friday’s 33-30 upset of Vance knocked the Cougars out of the Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 poll and gave Hough its fourth straight win.
Monday, the Huskies jumped into the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history. Hough is in at No. 16.
Statesville jumped up three spots to No. 11 after upsetting West Rowan Friday. West Rowan fell from No. 5 to a tie with Statesville at No. 11.

no small school love?
Did Vance not TROUNCE Independence and shut them out? And Vance falls off but Indy stays? Questionable credibility here as usual.
It really doesn't matter, Vance and Mallard Creek will be the only I-Meck schools who do anything in the playoffs...
Vance is overrated. Indy has one loss, Vance has two and more to come. Vance fans got real quiet after Butler "TROUNCED" them!
I am just trying to figure out how East Lincoln can be #2 in the STATE in 2A, but not receive even a mention in this poll????
How can South Point be #2 in the state, but be behind Crest and Charlotte Catholic in this poll?
South Point stays at #9??? I don't care about how they compare to the 4A schools, but there are 3 3A schools with 1 loss (none of which are ranked higher in the state 3A AP poll) ranked higher than SP in the Sweet 16. I'd really love to hear an explanation regarding how you guys reason that one--seriously. Obviously I'm failing to grasp something that you guys have into which the CO has insight...
Early season rankings don't win state titles I would waste so much time on this smh finish with a title an then see where your team stands in these polls
Don't worry about Vance being overrated... We have played without 4 starters for the last two games. We will hopefully get two back for the Mooresville game and will hopefully be full strength for the playoffs. People will not want to face us come playoffs. The only thing we can't account for are injuries! That is part of the game, but we have shown what we are capable of doing when we are full strength.... Just wait.... Lol
Can Butler and Porter Ridge meet in the playoffs? Not sure if Porter Ridge can play with them, but it appears to be the best match up. Would be an interesting game to see.
How can Crest be ahead of South Point? At some point common sense should enter in.
Q: When has Providence High School beat a team that went to the state football playoffs in that season?
A: It has been years!
Tired of losing at the ole matter. To much talent for this sad state of affairs
Indy will lose to ak.......
So Statesville beats West Rowan by 19 this week (without the services of Statesville's QB by the way) and they are tied with West Rowan. Do you idiots even look at the results of the game? I can go out right now on the ncpreps.com message board and find 20 people that know High School football better than the idiots that create this poll. No wonder nobody buys this paper.
Where to start
Anony 10:14. When you have a poll, everyone votes and we add up the points. It's not one person sitting around and naming the poll and saying, "Hmm, I'm gonna make Statesville and West Rowan the same thing just to make you mad."
West fell from No. 5 and Statesville rose from No. 14
Steve, no small school love? Two independent schools are ranked this week. South Iredell and Albemarle have also been ranked.
Anony 2:32 and 3:10, it's always interesting when people compare polls. "How can Team X be ranked in XX poll and be ranked lower in Y poll."
The Associated Press poll is just a poll. The Observer votes on it as well as several other newspapers throughout the state. The state polls are interesting because a lot of times we as voters are unfamiliar with many of the schools we vote on. We don't all get to watch USC-Stanford. We just see results in the paper. Tradition trumps results usually in these type of prep polls.
Not to say we get it right always either.
South Point and Crest will play so we'll find out who's king.
Anon 3:15, see the first comment about this being a poll.
We're trying guys. We do our research and vote with the best of our faculties in tact, believe it or not.

Obviously Crest plays South Point. More obviously they have already played a common opponent with SP scoring the much better victory and Crest has a loss. People are going to complain, but you should have voters that do more research. A little effort would be nice. Then apply some common sense and there you go. There will always be debates, but pollsters that do some would would avoid some of these obvious gaffes.
West Rowan probably has a better reputation state-wide than South Point does, and yet...
Vance you are not Shocking the World.
Your O-Line is Horrible. Beyond Repair.
You can not beat good teams with your O-Line.
Wake up! You guys are dreaming
This is not specifically about South Point. Just surprised that these pollsters don't do a little more research. There are multiple examples of obvious changes that should be made to the poll. Even if these pollsters are doing it for fun, you should have a little more pride if it is being published. If we are just going to wait until these teama play, you can do it at the end of the season. Even though some of these teasm have played and it doesnt seem to matter.
I believe Porter Ridge has one of the best Coaches in NC. Trying to match them with a Butler or MC would be a Train Wreck. Both teams would blow them off the Field. Not enough talent of depth to compete with those Teams.
I attended the PR vs AL Brown game. I believe PR had about 38 players.with about 8 of them jv players. Both MC and Butler have betteathleteses, plus the numbers would wear them down. It would be over by the 2 qtr
The knights gonna blow indy out on our way to butler, this is a special TEAM!
You could be right about Butler/MC beating up on Porter Ridge. I am just wnodering if they can play or if they are in different brackets for the state championships.
Ok Vance, so 4 players would have helped you beat Butler?? 4 players would have helped you overcome 49 points? Good try....see you in the playoffs if you make it that far!
Porter Ridge is a 4A school.
Butler is a 4AA school.
They can not play each other in the playoffs.
I really don't care where anybody is ranked, because everybody has their biases, whether they want to admit it or not. I really am curious about how one writer has Catholic either 5 or 6 in his poll and Country Day unranked. I'm curious as to how they justify that? I understand how polls work, so I don't need a lesson on that.
