Should Vance-Butler move to Memorial Stadium?

Not five minutes after Vance upset Independence 35-0 Thursday night at home, my phone started ringing with people asking about going to next Saturday's Butler at Vance game.

Actually, people started calling me Thursday night after Vance took a 21-0 lead at halftime. I was with my baby boy at a basketball skills and drills workout. Those calls and emails continued today and numbered at least 50.

Vance is now 3-0 and allows seven points per game. Butler, which is off this week, is 2-0 after beating Mallard Creek 27-6 and Olympic 69-7. You could make an argument that these are the two best defensive teams in North Carolina. You can make an argument that Butler, which starts three major college commits on offense, is the best offensive team in the state.

Apparently, a lot of people are interested in seeing this game.

The majority of the calls I got all were the same: folks were asking if the game could be moved to 17,000-seat Memorial Stadium. And it could.

But it'll take a little creative thinking.

I can tell you that I spoke with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools' excellent director of athletics Sue Doran this afternoon and she told me the schools had already had organizational meetings about the game. The plan is to hold the game at Vance.

Vance has a good stadium with good parking and good sight-lines. But, all of a sudden, this is the biggest game in Mecklenburg County so far this season, bigger than when nationally ranked Butler played nationally ranked Mallard Creek Aug. 17 -- at Memorial Stadium -- to start the season.

Friday night, Vance jumped onto the big stage. The Cougars handed Independence its first shutout loss since early in 1999. Independence had gone 188 games, and won seven state titles, since it was last shutout -- by Anson Senior. And this was an Independence team that many observers were wondering if the Patriots could seriously threaten Butler in the Southwestern 4A conference (and maybe the Patriots still can).

There have been rumblings about Vance, too, since Keith Wilkes took over as coach. Vance lost several key players to other schools the past two years. Those types of players came back this year and Wilkes -- who won state championships at Winston-Salem Carver -- told me about 15 times that this is one of the most talented teams, if not the most, he'd ever coached.

Looks like now that Wilkes knew what he was talking about.

And add to all of this that the game is on Saturday, when most of the area's teams and players would be free to come watch, and you have the potential for a big crowd at Vance. That's why it makes sense to go somewhere bigger if you can.

So here's a thought. Right now, Myers Park is hosting North Mecklenburg at Memorial next Saturday at 7. There are four CMS schools not playing Saturday: Mallard Creek, Hopewell, Olympic and Providence. These teams' home fields are available: Butler, Harding, Hough, Independence, North Meck.

If Myers Park were agreeable, CMS could move the North Meck game to an alternate site, or have a doubleheader at Memorial.

(Quick pause here: The junior varsity games are being played ahead of the varsity games, so in order to make this doubleheader work, jayvee games would have to be played at an alternate site. Can't have four games at one place. Or since coaches work both jv and varsity, maybe only way to make this work is split up the two varsity games).

Ultimately, it would be kind of cool to have the Mustangs play North Meck at, say, 2, followed by Butler-Vance at 7. The forecast for next Saturday is sunny with a high of 83. Great weather for the afternoon game and a great venue -- and plenty of seats -- for the evening game with the Bulldogs and Vance.

What do you think?

I'm not sure if Vance has enough support from it's alumni and/or fan base to contribute significant enough numbers to justify this game being moved to Memorial Stadium. This is all new to them!

Why dont they play at Providence H.S. ? Nice big stadium with new scoreboard. God knows those folks could use seeing some GOOD football for a change.

No school has the fan base to fill up Memorial stadium....it is all about who has the latest buzz... Vance has a new coach, new AD, new Principal, new uniforms, and a new everything else you can think of. The product that they are putting on the field is amazing as well. They will beat Butler by 14. The Vance defense is amazingly fast. Memorial will be a great place to hold that game!

I agree with the last statement... No fan base can fill up memorial, they would have to depend on the surrounding community to come out to watch. I saw Vance play Indy and they dominated! But Butler knows how to win.... Seems like a great story headline. If this is a close game and it is not played in memorial.... Let's hope for a semifinal between the two and it MUST be at memorial! I am a believer... Vance 35
Butler 14

I will be there...where ever it is!

Richardson... Don't take it to Memorial.... Make them lil puppies come to the COUGARS DEN!!!

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE V!!!!!

For the people saying no fan base can fill Memorial, I guess neither of you have attended the Butler vs. Independence playoff games in the past few years. And with the game being on Saturday, I'm sure the attendance would be great. Vance's wins over very weak Indy and Berry teams don't impress me at all, I predict another Butler rout next week.

hahahahahahahaha
vance will be routed 49-7 all dawgs in this game! VAnce fans say the same things every year and look at the out come.. remember in 2010 playoffs where you guys actually beat MC and than lost to butler 44-14 or something like that and your fans talked the same trash as they are now and the outcome will be the even worse.

Why would Myers Park move to 2 when it could be dangerously hot? The game has been scheduled for months and they would have nothing to gain by stepping aside. This is not a playoff game. Memorial has had very poor turnouts since the Indy-Richmond and Indy-Butler games the last decade. 3000 at Vance would be a great atmosphere. 3000 at memorial kills that. Leave it alone.

I have gone to the past playoff games at memorial... Indy vs Richmond, Indy vs Butler etc... And again if you think all 17000 of those fans were from those two schools... You are nuts! Again it will take the entire community wanting to see a game to fill memorial. Butler vs Mallard did not sell out because there were other games going on. If you think back.... All the games between butler and Indy were playoff games which means everybody at home with nothing else to do equals sell out!

Side note... I am tired of Butler, Indy and the I can't win the big one Mallard Creek....let's go Vance!

^^^If you are tired of Butler you're in for a looooooooong season!

I'd love to have an afternoon game at Memorial. Weather is in low 80s next week according to my Weather Channel app, so that's fine. I wouldn't mind us playing at Providence against North. We could keep concessions and make a little booster club $ we can't get at Memorial Stadium.

I think Vance should move to Memorial. On Saturday more people will come out from all around the area because all the teams except a few in Charlotte play on Friday night.

Langston who do we write to or call to help make this happen? I can work the MP folks!

Butler vs. Vance @ Providence

Memorial is too big for this game. Plus, I like the "high school" feel "The 'Dence" offers

No! No! No! Too early in the season and Vance is really an upstart. Should be a great game between two good teams. However, this game has little significance as far as the season goes other than one team remains undefeated at this point. If they get a rematch in the playoffs and there is no more than 3 losses between them, the larger stadium may be a good idea.

Good idea LW. I'd love to see it. I'm a big time Richmond fan and I'd drive down to see this with my family at the big stadium. Wouldn't be worth the risk of not getting in if at Vance, especially with parking situation. Hope they move. I'd love to see.

Keep it at Vance, and all you bandwagon jumpers that miss it OH WELL. Only the loyal should be allowed to see this game, and when Vance is victorious you can read about it the next day in the paper. And to the first comment, this (supporting their children and alumni) is NOT NEW and they have a great fan base that even travelled to WS 2 weeks ago. GO VANCE, I hope you slaughter Butler and get some decent refs!!

I agree....stay at Vance! This is a build up game, that we should all hope to see last round before state championship game! That is when we pull out the memorial card! I have seen both teams and they are both loaded with talent. Butler is HUGE and Vance is SUPER FAST! They both run a wing t offense and run it to perfect. I am excited!!! Should be a great one.

Memorial Stadium, Providence, Vance, doesn't matter where this game is played....Vance is a good team, but Butler is better. Vance is fast, but they better stay to the outside, DO NOT RUN UP the middle or it will be a loooooong nite!

If its possible move this game! Lots of folks are interested judging by this blog

This is great for CMS sports! Fans of both schools need to keep it clean and live in the moment. I know both teams are excited about the spirit of competition. From what I hear, both teams have very polite young men on their teams with great GPAs. Good luck to both! This is only round 1! They will see each other again, with bigger stakes! By the way Vance has to have the toughest schedule in the state! Wow.. Butler, Indy, MC, and Mooresville plus they add AL Brown next year! See y'all at the game!
