State golf report: Marvin Ridge freshman leads 3A finals

Marvin Ridge freshman Brandon Katsoudas was one of two golfers to shoot under par rounds at Foxfire Golf and Country Club in the first round of the N.C. 3A state golf championships Monday.

The golf championships in all classes ends Tuesday.

Katsoudas shot a 2-under 70 to tie Southern Lee’s Zane Lewis. Gastonia Forestview’s Alex Taylor was fourth with a 73. Charlotte Catholic’s Keegan Hoff and Marvin Ridge’s D.K. Kim were next at 74.
Gastonia’s Forestview High holds a one shot lead over Charlotte Catholic in the team standings.
Forestview shot a first day total of 303.

Marvin Ridge is two shots behind in third place.

-- In the 4A finals at Pinehurst, Raleigh Broughton freshman Stephen Saleeby shot a 5-under 67 to take a five shot lead on Ardrey Kell’s Andrew Klasing and Clayton’s David Germann.

Broughton won five straight titles from 1998-2002 and also won in 2004. It’s in position to add another championship with a 12-shot lead (288 total) over Ardrey Kell. Hough (300) is third.

In the individual race, Ardrey Kell’s Mitch Schneider shot a 2-over 74 and is tied with several golfers, including Hough’s David Sargent and Peyton White and Myers Park’s Luke Thalman for fourth.

-- At the 2A championships in Southern Pines, Salisbury’s Alex Nianouris shot a 1-under-70 at the 6,600-yard Longleaf Golf and Coutry Club to tie for the lead. Reigning 2A state champ Taylor Coalson of North Surry also shot a 70, just ahead of North Lincoln’s Miller Capps.

Salisbury, seeking its second straight state title, shot 290 Monday to build a 13-shot lead over second place North Lincoln.

-- At the N.C. Independent Schools 3A championship, Christ School shot a 292 to take an eight shot lead over Forsyth Country Day. Providence Day (306) was third. Individually, Christ School’s Jeff Krieger shot a 4-under 68 at the Greensboro Country Club to grab a three shot lead over Charlotte Christian’s David Kocher and Providence Day’s Davis Bateman. Hickory Grove’s Chad Cox shot a 73 and is one of four golfers tied for third.

-- At the 1A finals at Builes Creek, Kernersville’s Bishop McGuinness (289 total) has a big lead on Lake Norman Charter (311). Bishop McGuinness’ William Whitacre shot a 67 to earn a four shot lead over teammate Stanhope Johnson.
