West Charlotte holds off Vance again, plus buzzer beating video

Less than a week ago, West Charlotte guard Mike Brown dribbled nearly the length of the court before hitting a pull up jump shot to beat Vance 57-55 in a big regular-season game.

Wednesday night in the I-Meck 4A semifinals, the Lions needed some more late heroics to turn away Vance.

This time, Trey Foster made a three-point shot with 35 seconds left for a 62-59 lead and then hit two free throws for the Lions final points that sealed the win.

Here is video of Mike Brown's game-winner from a week ago. Here's a link to a feature on Brown.

Hey Langston....Mallard Creek beat North Meck FOR THE SECOND TIME...And NO story from you...COME ON MAN!!!! Get your West Charlotte goggles off and give credit to a good coach and a solid team...Every time I look at the sports page its Kennedy Charter this Kennedy Charter that...Addie this Addie that...WC this WC that....And NO mention of Mallard Creek...Why is that??? Addie and Kenedy Charter CHEAT LIKE h@ll to get those DI kids to play...THey still from public schools and promise the world and most of the times never deliver...Give credit to a solid coach and Mallard Creek...You are awful and I can only hope MC beats your WC.....Go crawl in a hole Langston....I guess North Meck will drop to #4 in Sweet 16 and MC, beating them twice now, will still not crack the "on the bubble" watch...you are a joke...along with this paper

Oh my gosh! This could have been the greatest win in the history of sports!

Great Story Langston. You know the saying, you can't please em all.
I appreaciate your POSITIVE stories on the kids of WC. Sooo much is said about them NEGATIVELY. Even if it is sports related. So continue doing a what you do Langston. We all know why they don't want to hear about those particular schools winning. They rather hear something negative instead....smdh

Mallard Creek beats NM for the second time.... So What! That is not a high profile game....Come On! No D1 kids on either team. MC Senior night, none of them(Seniors) have Scholarships to any College and they may be winning, but they look like a Park and Rec team. A few kids glad Coach Rutledge took over the coaching jon @ MC because they will still be on someone"s bench as the water boys!Solid coach? Come on man.... This coach has five Seniors on his team and take a look @ his bench and see what he has coming back next year...a joke! He better enjoy his wins this year! Look like his JV team was his future.... Again... was his future! Langston keep doing your job reporting on the kids and teams that should be recognized. S/O to Coach Rob and his Cougars, way to fight back last night. Vance will be the team to watch out for the next two years....they are a young team and the coach understands the concept of building the program and not tear it down!! Good luck to all teams advancing to playoffs.

Someone from Mallard Creek complaining about recruiting? Isn't that like the pot calling the kettle black?

Anonymous said...

Attention Mallard Creek.... Please recruit a new AD, Mens Bball Head/Asst Coaches because what you have now is straight GARBAGE!!!!

You all have made it easier to see what a solid coach and PROGRAM Mallard Creek has. And hate to inform you but only 3 kids graduate from MC this season. Their leading scorer, Domonique Henderson, is back along with Jav. and a load of talent on their JV team. Lucas ? is only a Freshman and will only get better. Im all for exposure to kids that need it but to give credit to PRIVATE schools who steal public school kids and create a "dream team" and call that caoch (ADDIE) a great coach is well STUPID. And the reason MC has had success this year is because they got rid of the selfish, ME ME ME kids and started building a PROGRAM. It says a lot about a coach and kids that can take "water boys" and finish 2nd in the toughest 4A confernce in NC..And they do have kids that are going to play college...but you wouldn't know that because Langston doesn't throw MC basketball down everyones throats like other teams....It has to kill Langston that he has to mention MC in the championship....He did the same when Hopewell's Eric Davis was coaching...No exposure for him or Hopewell program.....

Anonymous 11:57 am, I hate to inform you there are five Seniors leaving MC this season!According to their bio's on Senior night, no one is going to college to play ball. Maybe two will walk on to play on some college team. The waterboys should have kept their jobs because they're not a factor on the court. When MC had a real coach, those players didn't even make the team. They are the only kids around the school that will follow Rutledge "do as I say and speak when I say" program! I'm @ the games as well and when MC beat Vance at home, they celebrated like they won a championship! Come on! MC with a team of Seniors beat a team of Fresh/Soph by one point and they celebrating! Even though it was their first win against Vance in 3 or 4yrs. Vance turned around the second game and beat the wheels off MC!(by 19 or 20 pts) That's the difference in a solid team! You have to build your future off the young kids, not think only about this season. Speaking of playing MeMeMe ball.... I'm sure you're wathcing just like me, the kid who goes coast to coast and see no other team mates posted calling for the ball! Ummmm. Selfish ball! MC bball will not have the coverage like MC football/baseball even if the basketball team make history! Maybe they should recruit a coach like Addie and maybe the team will get some recognition. These comments are not exposing the program as being solid.... just giving you some recognition on the blog!

mc does not have a solid coach or a solid program. the fact is, mchs athletes are hard working people that despite the obvious lack of leadership and athetic guidance they need, they tend to excel. it's too bad the local media doesn't support this still relatively new school as they strive toward excellence. even when the football team excels as it does, the coverage is minimal at best; the media opting to still cover independence or others who are clearly not on the same level as they used to be.

WC gets a lot of coverage because they are THE DEFENDING STATE CHAMPIONS. Kennedy Charter gets a lot of coverage because they have several D1 prospects. And I don't see Oak Hill Academy agreeing to play Mallard Creek do I? MC can't expect more coverage than they deserve when they've not done much to deserve it. Stop being so entitled! When the championships and/or talent floods through MC's doors, you'll get all the coverage you can take. In the meantime, stop whining about everyone else and control what you can control. Like your mouth.

Keep up the great work Langston. These fools obviously haven't read any of your sports related human interest pieces. Great great stuff!

During football season it was all mallard creek, now they complain. They do not have a basketball program OK...Sorry to say, but if West Charlotte was not in the final tomorrow, no onw would care. Every kids in Charlotte who is serious about basketball would love to attend West Charlotte. Get over it! It's a great school for a lot of reasons, not just sports. Our mayor, politicians, doctors, lawyers all graduates from Wesy Charlotte. Notice I mentioned no athletes. It's the school ALL kids wants to attend, but their parents by in to the " this school is better because it's not as black" You kids are missing out. Everyone loves to hate the "DUB".

MC "water boys", crappy coaches and no D-1 talent make the championship game of the toughest conference in State? What does that say about the other teams? Perhaps it says more about the basketball program finally getting on the right track after subpar years with so-called "talented" teams which didn't win.

Great job to those "waterboys" at MCHS. 18 wins and counting. Best season in MC's short history. I know the point of Charlotte basketball is not winning (obvious from the posts above), but you guys have done great. Its a shame that guys without "cred" were given a chance to play. Great kids coming together can do great things. Keep it up.

I never knew MC had a real coach until the past two years...All I knew about MC was they did have DI talent but NO COACH...ITs obvious that some people just can't let things go...trying to bash a coach online now...wow!! Go away! Good job MC "water boys"...says a lot about your character, heart, and dedication building the foundations of a PROGRAM people can and will be proud of. I guess their are about 7 other teams that would love to have "water boys" like MC has..haha...Good luck tomorrow night...

I guess West Charlotte celebrating after they beat a bunch of "sophs/fresh" from Vance was their championship too....Your comments concerning "water boys" "Real coach" "getting a real coach" "had a real coach" sounds really bitter...Are you the old coach that had talent(DI) and could only win 4-5 games a year??? If not, you sure sound like it...

Looks like MC Varsity parents got together to post their comments...Hahaha!!Well MC is still trash and the waterboys along with the coaches!!! They are trying to credit for playing in the conference championship! Win a state title first and get a new coach along with D1 players, then maybe you can stop whining....until then, all MC brainwashed parents....SIT DOWN!!!!

Wow! All this talk about Mallard Creek must mean they're doing something right over there. No one talks about a team when they're not winning.

Anonymous said...

Bad coaching + bad players = 18 wins and counting. I'll take that every time. Keep rolling MC.

I sit in the stands with the parents of the varisty team @MC, I have seen with my own eyes that program will fail in the coming years as long as that coach is there. He shouldn"t be allowed to coach kids. From what I see, no the team has no D1 talent, just kids that play AAU, and anybody can play AAU ball. The team is so unorthodox that other teams really have a hard time playing them. I'm a fan of the game and really just go to watch the other teams that they play. MC JV team has more talent than their varsity and I really enjoy watching the JV boys play. I really don't care if their team had 30 wins, the basketball program is a wrap. I agree with the previous comment about some kids wouldn't have made the team, well I'm just a fan of the game and only about 3 would have made that team. It's not that you're winning the reason people are on here talking, I think the first comment on the blog just opened a can of worms.

Please win the championship so the parents can stop whining because no one is giving they little babies credit!!! Put them on the football field so they can get TUFF!!! BlahBlahBlah

I like when people agree with their own comment. I agree with a lot of people on this post. The coach before this guy had things really rolling. I wish him luck with his new team. I think they are favorites this year. Slipping my mind where he is caoching right now. Feel bad for the kids at MCHS. Sounds terrible for them. I agree the program will be a wrap if they win 30, that sounds logical and well thought out, and not at all bitter as some people above put it. Something needs to be doen before the program devolves into a 30 win quagmire! Mallard Creek you should be ashamed of yourself!
