A few changes, one new team in Sweet 16 basketball poll this week

There’s some minor changes in the Charlotte Observer boys and girls Sweet 16 basketball polls this week, but not much at the top.

Olympic and Northside Christian are still unbeaten and 1-2 in the boys poll.

Unbeaten Myers Park and private school power Providence Day are still 1-2 in the girls poll.

Only one new team joined this week. Harding’s girls are No. 16. The Rams have won 11 straight since losing their opener 62-53 to No. 8 Ardrey Kell. Harding plays No. 5 Berry on the road Friday in one of the biggest girls games of the year.

Charlotte catholic can ball...they should be on this

catholic beat 2 sweet 16 teams this week, they are number 1 in south charlotte news. no sweet 16, I don't get it.

He didn't put catholic in because that would mean that the mega 4A/3A has three teams in the ranking meaning the conference is the best in the city which we know he doesn't wanna do just like west charlotte has no business in the poll after losing at home to lake norman smh

This is Langston's I love you list. Catholic should be here, they are no fluke just solid. Cuthbertson only dropped 4 after getting mauled by Metrolina Christian who also gets no love. Cuthbertson is not deserving after getting beat by 18 at home.

I witnessed Catholic beat Harding and Berry. How are they not ranked? Champion is the best shooter in the city, Pollack is not far behind, Belfield controls the tempo and all they do is win. What happens Friday when they beat Olympic? Oh I know, it will be an "upset" like all of West Charlotte's losses.

Who votes in these polls. Charlotte Catholic beat both Harding and Berry - which remain in the middle of the rankings while Catholic is still out. There is no logic in that.

Catholic is ranked above both Harding and Berry in the conference, so why are they not at least ranked in this poll when Harding and Berry are?

Once again proving how dismal the Charlotte Observer is at anything.

How is Northside in the poll? I thought you had to field a football team to one of the Sweet Sixteen schools?

Anonymous said...

Nope, Langston can overlook that if he chooses. There needs to be an AAU section for his sweet 16. Catholic is getting hosed by not being there when the teams they beat are. This just means this list and his opinion are biased and suspect. He LOVES Berry, don't ever forget that.

Catholic beat Berry, Harding and East Gaston. Harding lost to East Gaston. Enough said.

How is Catholic not ranked? Common sense says they should be when you take a look at their total body of work to this point. If rankings like this are to have any merit - West Charlotte while talented should not be on the list. They need to start playing like a championship team & play their way back in to the poll. This poll is about as credible as the article a week ago putting the Marcus Kid at Berry in as one of the top 5 2013girls baskeball players in the state on NC. The question with that is Based on What? Just as ludicrous was a list of the top ten 2012 girls that didn't include the Shembo Kid from AK. Are you saying she is not a better player than both Mack & Burleson? The comments here are not to offend anyone but the reality is that these type of list that just show up in a public news paper with not credibility or research should not be allowed to be printed and becomes disrepectful to the actual deserving ones who are easily recognized by their stats & real bb fans that see them play more than once or twice throughout the year.

Just a thought but I think Charlotte Christian and Northside will let you reclass after 9th grade if you are entering from another school.

Anonymous, thank you!!! I couldn't believe that I was reading this poll. Beating 7 & 8 and then beating East Gaston on Tuesday (they gave Harding their only other loss) doesn't even get Catholic a #16 ranking. They're just on the bubble?!?!? Then, no mention of the game this week against Olympic??? This is a huge game!!! Hope that Catholic and their amazing coach, Mike King will get some credit.

Catholic fans are on a rampage! I'm guessing from the comments that Harding and Berry are your best wins. Who are your 2 losses against? I'm sure the South Charlotte news is not biased by ranking Catholic #1.

First of all, look up the two losses. If you have any merit in this thread besides pot stirring you'd know where to find the teams records. You can't assume that these comments even come from Catholic fans. It could come from any follower of area high school basketball. Catholic's losses are to South Meck, another ranked team and Archbishop in a tournament over the holidays. FACTS are FACTS! Conversation over whether South Charlotte news is biased or not is completely irrelevant! Catholic handed losses to two ranked teams, is undefeated in conference, giving conference losses to ranked teams and beating the only other team that's beat Harding (ranked). FACTS are FACTS! Have you watched any of these teams play? If not, then you're just pot stirring and have no value to add to this thread of comments. Maybe come out to Catholic and see how they play Olympic on Friday night, then decide once you've INFORMED yourself.

Ok Catholic fan or Anonymous, whatever you want to be called. I'm not pot stirring, just asking a question about the team that has dominated this thread. South Charlotte news ranked them #1 and since it was previously mentioned in this thread it is relevant. I actually agree with the posts about the WC bias in the Sweet 16. With that being said, beat Olympic on Friday and I'm sure you will be ranked. But if you lose, I guess you will have to vent on the threads some more about disrespect.

Are you guys crazy BEAT Olympic is not gonna happen don't forget they are #1 in the state for a reason i do agree that Catholic should be ranked but don't get ahead of yourself and your right Langston LOVES West Charlotte because he's a graduate

Whether Langston is a graduate or not - he still should be fair & accurate about what he prints in his blogs. If you're going to have rankings then they should be computed using some sort analytical formula that includes or excludes teams/players that do not submit to the minimum requirements of the rankings. If a team or player is good - they are good no matter who they're playing against. Their stats may change based on the quality of the competition but they are still a good team or player. Langston, you have to have some accurate consistentcy in your articles & be fair to all your readers, teams & players alike. Professionals who go on to be announcers do it all the time. West Charlotte may be able to beat any given team on any given night but right now they are themselves getting beat on too many given nights. Catholic should at least have that spot. Teams & Players are judged/ranked by their current & past performances. As a team you were either really good last year & moved high into the playoffs or you added several really good players this year that people already know from their past body of work & accomplishments. If you are a junior or senior & have played your previous 2 or 3 years but have never made all conference or player of the year or even mvp of your team - how can you be considered one of the top players in our great state of basketball talent? Get your facts before you print Langston or don't print at all. They say you like Berry HS. Well if you do, the Baucome Kid is where the print should go. Her accomplishments is worth writing about & the facts shouldn't be too hard to find since it's right in your backyard so to speak.

I'm a olympic fan an we really could careless about a ranking were working towards a state title. I think people on here should take a chill pill an refocus rightfully so they should be on the list but we are human an make mistakes give the guy a break focus on winning game's an leave the hyping to the people that watch your team play our team didn't beg langston to be #1 I guess he felt we were by our body of work

Anonymous said...

Olympic is a great team and it will be a great game Friday. I completely agree, look at the body of work. That's what everyone in this thread is saying!

Its easy to win when you recruit players and have elite talent like Northside...they should not be aloud in poll but Langston is trying to get "dink" and college job in the area...same with berry...berry recruits as well...its easy to coach when you have DI players...Look at Mugsy at United Faith...he's not a coach at all but has had his head blown up by langston as the next "dean" of basketball...he is using Wiseman's guys and all are DI material....if you want to see true coaching look at North Meck (Everybody hates on Lewis because he doesnt put up with AAU coaches and big headed kids who are spoiled) every year he loses DI kids to these recruiting privates but still puts a winning team on the floor...Look at Mallard Creek coach Rutledge(he doesnt put up with nonsense and has had about 5-6 DI kids leave because they werent willing to work as a team)he's at the top of the conference....Why not any clippings for them Langston??? Why, well you know why...And Langston cant stand Catholic...once again you know why.....Sweet 16 is a joke....please pay no attention to the polls or to what Langston writes about....There are "Real" coaches in the area that are coaching there teams and teaching them LIFE LESSONS....

Anonymous said...

Let me get the correct....Salisbury girls are ranked #9 11-2(they were beat by Newton Conover who is #14 who in return was KILLED by Bandys who is ranked #11 and are 12-0.....Good one Langston good one...Now you know why people think you are foolish....WOW...you prove it every time you write....

This weeks 16 sure stirred a lot of feelings about Langstons abilities and motives. I appreciate the response about the coaches that are about doing it right and not putting up with the AAU attitudes of some of these kids. Let me add one more name to that list. Michael Wilson at Metrolina is doing a phenomenal job at teaching Basketball and life lessons. You heard nothing of Cuthbertson losing at home by 18 to his squad of no recruits who are now 16-5. Also, I think Cannon has gone on to win alot of games since their D-1 recruit left the team. Maybe the Coach actually knew best. Celebrate these guys who are really good without hired guns to get them wins.

Anonymous said...

Isn't Cannon 4-12?

Anonymous said...

Yes but won without the D1 and playing better which was my point. Not that they are a 16 team, just bemoaning all the headaches good coaches deal with.

Anonymous said...

Northside and Christian DO recruit. If it's not their coaches talking to players at other schools then they send parents to do it for them to keep them out of sight.
