Mecklenburg County All-Conference Football Teams
NCHSAA conference proposal is good for Charlotte-Mecklenburg
Every four years, the N.C. High School Athletic Association reorganizes its schools into new conferences, calling the process "realignment."
Every four years, there's a lot of consternation about where schools are placed. I can see trouble in some spots in the state from the first draft that's come out this week, but for Mecklenburg County, I don't see much of a problem at all.
Charlotte Catholic moves into what's traditionally been the Southwestern 4A and the Cougars will play schools like Ardrey Kell and South Meck and Providence, schools that are a 10-minute drive away, and beef up their schedule at the same time.
Union County's Porter Ridge joins the league and, best I can tell, Porter Ridge has always considered itself almost like a Mecklenburg County school. Many of the Porter Ridge parents work in Charlotte, live their lives in Charlotte and "think" Charlotte (at least judging by my emails).
Now they are Charlotte and will play Charlotte schools on a regular basis.
I also like A.L. Brown coming into a Charlotte conference. That brings a major football powerhouse in, as well as former Butler football coach Mike Newsome, maybe the state's top coach. Brown will get to tangle with rising football powers Mooresville and Mallard Creek and the basketball should be good, too, mixing those three in with North Meck and Vance.
The third league is interesting, too. By adding West Charlotte and Independence, the old ME-GA 7, can't be considered "the third league" anymore. It's got some serious star power. It may also rekindle what used to be the state's best rivalry between Independence and West Charlotte -- in football and basketball -- and I like East Meck moving to this league as well.
The schools, of course, can ask for change. The state association plans to create its own staff-generated model for schools to mull over. By January, schools will have to formally make counter proposals.
I really don't think that CMS needs to.

Mom surprises son with Turkey Day visit; son suprises mom with best game ever
Evelyn got up at 2 a.m. last Tuesday to drive three hours to Dallas to try to get to the airport. When she got there, she would use a "stand-by" ticket, meaning her ticket was only good if a flight wasn't full. She didn't know if she would get a flight in time to make the Eagles game or not.
But she got to the gym in time.
And he saw her.
"It was really emotional for him," East Mecklenburg coach Jason Grube said, "because she surprised him. He hadn't seen her in a while."
Properly inspired, Leathers had the game of his life. He made a 70-foot shot just before halftime.
In the second half, he continued his hot play.
East Meck, which started last season 1-12 and finished 8-18, pulled off a big early-season upset, taking down Sun Valley 74-69.
Leathers finished with 27 points on 9-of-14 shooting. He had 13 rebounds, nine assists and five steals.
Grube said his mom gave him a big present by coming. And he said Leathers gave her one right back.

United Faith boys win big in Muggsy Bogues first game as coach
With Florida coach Billy Donovan in the stands at United Faith, Falcons point guard Braxton Ogbueze gave his future coach a solid look at all of his talents.
Ogbueze, a top 40 national player signed to Florida, scored a game-high 23 points to go with four assists and two rebounds in United Faith’s 102-76 win over Walnut Grove Christian Tuesday night. Ogbueze and the United Faith starters didn’t play in the fourth quarter after busting the game open with a 28-7 surge in the decisive third quarter.
The Falcons, ranked No. 30 nationally by ESPN, won on the coaching debut of new head coach Muggsy Bogues, the former Charlotte Hornet and ACC great at Wake Forest.
“I felt very pleased about the way we played,” Bogues said. “The first half, I didn’t like the way we competed, but in the second half, the guys stepped up and took on the challenge. We’re still a work in progress, but I’m loving the way the guys are competing and how they want to get better.”
Eighth grader V.J. King had 14 points and five rebounds for the Falcons. Senior Zach Davis had 15 points, four rebounds and three assists and 7-foot Indiana signee Peter Jurkin had 14 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks.

Big shift in the Observer's Sweet 16 football poll
With two weeks left in the regular season, the Sweet 16 championship is still up for grabs. One thing is for certain, however, there will be a new champion this year.
Butler has won the past two state championships in the N.C. 4AA class and won the past two Sweet 16 football championships. But the Bulldogs had two important streaks end this year. To start the season,
Butler lost 28-20 to Mallard Creek, ending a 31-game win streak.
Friday night in Greensboro, the Bulldogs blew a 26-6 lead and lost to unbeaten Greensboro Page 40-26. That ended Butler’s 12-game playoff win streak, and ended Butler’s hopes for a third straight state title, too.
Butler fell from No. 2 to No. 6 in the Sweet 16 this week, allowing Charlotte Catholic to move up a spot to No. 2.
The Cougars will try to reach the N.C. 3AA championship Friday at home against Crest, which is back in the poll this week at No. 16. Crest moved in after Myers Park dropped out, following last week’s 42-10 loss to No. 1 Mallard Creek. The Mustangs were only down four points to the nationally ranked Mavericks at halftime, but Mallard Creek scored five touchdowns in nine plays early in the second half to bust the game open.
Now, Mallard Creek will go to Greensboro Page in a battle of unbeaten teams for the right to go to the N.C. 4AA finals in Winston-Salem.
