High School "Rudy" Awards to offer $25,000 in college scholarships

Former Dallas Cowboy quarterback Troy Aikman has joined the selection committee for the third High School Rudy Awards, which awards  $25,000 worth of college academic scholarships to inspirational high school football players.

Former New England Patriot stars Drew Bledsoe and Tedy Bruschi are also on the committee, which will pick a winner from national submissions to highschoolrudayawards.com

The award is named for Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger, who overcame long odds to play football at Notre Dame and later had a movie made out of his life story.

Since the program began three years ago, nominees have received more than five million votes.

“Rudy never gave up, he never quit,” said Inspireum Founder and CEO John Ballantine, who company, along with the Trusted Sports Foundation, is sponsoring the program. “Many of our nominees are facing overwhelming challenges, yet they turn up at every practice, showing such deep love of the game as they inspire their teammates to work harder and be better individuals on and off the field. Their courageous and uplifting stories connect on a deep level within their communities, and everyone who learns about them. It’s an honor to share their stories.”

This year, 12 finalists will share the $25,000 in scholarship monies, with the overall winner taking home $7,500. Anyone can nominate athletes and upload video and images via the website. Online voting begins Sept. 30. The top 12 will be chosen Dec. 11 and the winner, four runners-up and one fan will be announced Jan. 15.
