Butler-Mallard Creek to play season opening football game in August

Butler High and Mallard Creek, arguably the state's two best high school football teams last year, will kick off the 2011 season against each other.

The game will be played Aug. 19 at Mallard Creek High.

Last season, Butler won its second straight N.C. 4AA championship, and en route, many fans were hoping that the Bulldogs would have to play Mallard Creek in the state semifinals. Both teams were unbeaten and nationally ranked for most of the season, but Mallard Creek quarterback Marquise Williams, voted by several publications as the state player of the year, injured his ankle a week prior to playing Vance in the quarterfinals.

Vance upset Mallard Creek in the quarterfinals, with Williams playing sparingly, before losing at Butler in the semifinals, or regional championship.

This season, however, both Butler and Mallard Creek are again expected to be very strong. If I were ranking the state's best teams regardless of class right now, I'd go Butler, Richmond Senior, Mallard Creek. I think Butler's a clear No. 1, with sophomore quarterback Riley Ferguson already beginning to wow scouts at camps and combines.

Mallard Creek's D.J. Humphries, a 6-5, 290 pound junior, is the state's top overall recruit in the class of 2012 and one of the top 15 nationally by many publications. He'll anchor the line for a big Mavericks team that must replace Williams, now a freshman at North Carolina, but has a wealth of skill talent and speed.

"This game was something we've been trying to do, trying to get them on our schedule," Mavericks coach Mike Palmieri said. "Both teams agreed to it and it was done mostly through the ADs. They communicated a lot. Listen, they're the two-time defending champs and we get an opportunity against them. Any game like this is good. It should be exciting."

Finally Mallard Creek will shut up after Butler puts a pounding on them at there home field. The Coach of Mallard Creek will finally get a EGO check, he didnt learn from teh VANCE ego check.

MC is loaded more this year than last year. Butler will not stand a chance. This game will be over by Half time. The only players Butler have left are a overrated QB, with a bunch of very slow receivers. Oh and one linebacker. I know Butler fans like to compare themselves to Indy. Not happening. Leave with your coach and go to AL BROWN..LOL

I love to hear that MC is loaded...didn't they lose a lot on defense and the JV team was "suspect"? They will miss Williams more than the "egotistic" coaches will ever say!! That head coach is a b@#tch!!

Can we all just get along???? Lol! I'm glad the boys finally have a chance to play each other! Have fun boys! May the best team win!

should be a great way to start off the high school football season

Butler's roster is going to change Tuesday morning. QB, TE, WR, and LB will be living in an apartment in Kannapolis.

This game will be a non story. They are both shells of themselves from the previous years. I do think Butler has a program and system that will enable them to continue winning for a year or two. MC just does not seem to be a close knit group.....

Butler better be looking for a new coach. Word is Newsome is the new HC at K-Town for the Wonders. Details out soon.

Hardin at Butler?

Look for TK to come back from Colo SC to coach Butler.

as a BHS alumn and football fan i would guess they will promote from within like they did when Newsome first got the job, No way ever would TK coach the bulldogs

U kidding right?

Where do these idiots comes from?

Knotts is a perfect fit at BHS.

Knotts tried to get the Concord job when Smith retired but Padgett from North Meck was hired.

Knotts wanted the KTown job too but too many top names applied for it.

Look for Butler to hire TK. Yea hes getting old and would coach circles around chumps like the new CP Rivera but he is aiming right for the Matthews NC intersection of HWY 74 Andrew Jackson Highway and Highway 51.

Fact.

Butler better get together and come up with some $$$ if you want Knotts. The fallacy of the whiny LW article is CMS should pay more?
Wrong.

The extra money at all schools or colleges comes from supporters boosters and alumni NOT the govt schools you moron !!!

Stop laying the blame on the school system. U gotta pay to play. Butler got lucky with Newsome who was as unknown but Knotts is a known winner and 500% better judging by 2 compared to 7.
