Lots of changes in Sweet 16 polls: five new teams join in

The boys Sweet 16 had multiple changes as we head into the final week of the regular season and some of those changes opened up opportunities for new teams.

No. 11 Morganton Freedom, which has won seven straight since losing to No. 8 Concord, joins the poll this week along with Vance, which upset No. 7 North Mecklenburg last week. Vance, a preseason Sweet 16 pick, is in at No. 12.

Other changes:
-- Gastonia Huss, which has won nine straight, moved up two spot to No. 4 and Charlotte Christian jumped two spots to No. 3. Last week’s Nos. 3 and 4, Concord and North Mecklenburg, both suffered upset losses last week.

-- Hickory, which has won 14 straight, jumps two spots to No. 7 and Butler jumped two spots to No. 8.

-- Three new teams joined the girls poll -- Catawba Bandys, Monroe Parkwood and Harding -- after several ranked teams lost last week. Hopewell moved up to No. 3 and Mallard Creek dropped to No. 4 after the Titans stopped Mallard Creek Friday.

No Love for the Shelby Golden Lion's Girls team. They are a force to reckon with beating teams by 50 pts!

Charlotte Christian boys should be #1 by a longshot. They have 5 losses but these losses have been at national tournaments. Their last two losses we by a combined 3 points to two top 10 national teams at the ESPN High Rise tournament. Call me crazy but I dont hear about any of the other teams (Olympic, WC) in this poll being invited to national tournaments, let alone winning in them. No way Olympic or West Charlotte could keep up with Christian's speed.

In the boys poll, East Rutherford beat both Burns and Freedom last week. Just a little FYI.. might want to put them up around 6 or 7.

In the girls poll, I would switch Shelby and Berry. Shelby would whip Berry all over the court. They are that good.

Why does the Sweet 16 exclude some privates obviously better than many in the poll? United Faith Christian Academy is the highest ranked team in the State in the ESPN poll and yet they are not included? How is it that Charlotte Christian is included and others are not?
