After coming close, Charlotte Latin finally gets field hockey state title
The Charlotte Latin field hockey team had never won a state championship. Saturday afternoon, the Hawks not only won their first NCISAA state title, but also did in style finishing a perfect 21-0 this season with a 4-0 win over Raleigh Ravenscroft on their home turf (at Latin).
Latin, who has outscored their opponents 102-5 this year, won the championship game in dominant fashion again, shut out all three opponents in the playoffs, including the Ravens, Durham Academy and Cape Fear Academy by a combined 12-0.
“This has never happened to us or me before, but it is a pretty amazing feeling,” Latin field hockey coach Deb Savino said. “All year, we have a total team effort every game. I think that is why this group is so special and so dominant.”
After a scoreless first half in which each team had its chances, Latin proved why they are the best team in the state, early and often in the second.
Just 3:28 in the second half, junior Caroline Kelly opened the scoring with a ripping shot from about 15 yards out, to put the Hawks up 1-0.
Just over two minutes later, last scored again when Kelly found a wipe open Mia Kane in front of the goal for another score a 2-0 advantage.
Then, Latin scored for the third time in a 3:40 span when Callie Kennedy found the left corner of the goal.
“At halftime, we knew we had to pick it up and get our “mojo” going,” Kane said, who was voted all-state along with Kelly, Kennedy and Eva Royther after the game. “We came out ready to go (second half) and we got hot and things just kept going our way.”
Sophomore Becca Jones added the fourth and final goal with just over eight minutes to go in the game to put the game completely away.
But while the offense played well, the defense led by all-state goalkeeper, Myers McGarry. McGarry, a junior, notched her 16th shutout of the season, and got a lot of support from defenders Ann Baynard, Stephanie Coma and Isabel Stein, among others.
“Our defense has been special all year,” Savino said, whose team allowed five goals all year. “I think it fitting that we got a shutout in the finals.”
Latin, as a team, also overcame a big obstacle as they finally won the state title in the 4th attempt. The Hawks had lost in 2004, 2007 and last year (2009) in the final game.
“I don’t know what to do,” Kane said. “We’ve been working towards this (state championship) forever. It’s an honor to be the 1st team at Latin to be the state champions.”

Country Day visits Providence Day tonight in key CISAA football game
Providence Day is having a solid season under coach Bruce Hardin as tailback Josh Covington has had a breakout year.
Covington has rushed for 1,311 yards and 18 touchdowns and is the No. 2 running back in the county.
His team will face one of the county's top passers in Country Day's Morgan Roberts, who has thrown for 1,249 yards and 17 touchdowns.
Country Day plays at Providence Day starting at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
The Chargers need an upset to have any shot at a league title. Country Day will look to win to get in position for a CISAA championship showdown at home with Charlotte Latin (7-1, 2-0) next week.
With a new playoff system this year that only puts four teams in the NCISAA Division I playoffs, every conference game matters, so this could be a playoff elimination game of sorts.

Scouts, recruiters find hidden talent at basketball camp
LEWISVILLE, N.C. National recruiting analyst Dave Telep of ESPN said last weekend's N.C. Prep Phenom 150 camp was about opportunity.
More than 150 high school basketball players from the Carolinas, Georgia, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia attended the two-day showcase event at Forsyth Country Day.
"It's about finding 15 to 20 guys who want to be Division I players play hard and show they want it," Telep said. "It's basically a tryout, an unbelievable opportunity to grab a headline for yourself."
Telep said he was surprised some kids didn't play hard in front of Telep and several other national and regional scouts.
The consensus top player was Andrew White, a 6-foot-7 guard from Virginia. White said he's been working out three times a day. Telep said the time and effort clearly are showing.
Telep said he also was struck by the potential of Wilmington New Hanover's Nigel Holley, a 6-7 sophomore post player.
The top N.C. player, scouts said, was 6-8 junior T.J. Warren of Raleigh Word of God. He started slowly but, when challenged, showed off a game that included a solid jump shot and big-time dunks. Some scouts on hand said Warren could be a national top 50 player by the time he's a senior.
Telep came away impressed with some newer faces.
"There's 20 guys who will be Division I here," Telep said, "and probably half of them you wouldn't have known their names before today."
