Ardrey Kell, East Meck to forfeit games for using ineligible players
One Mecklenburg County football team and one county soccer team have forfeited games after each used an ineligible player.
Ardrey Kell’s football team inadvertently used a player whose physical had expired in a 32-17 non-conference win over Weddington Sept. 11.
The Knights record will drop from 3-1 to 2-2. Weddington’s record will improve from 4-1 to 5-0.
East Mecklenburg’s soccer team inadvertently used a player who had not attended school on the day of a 1-0 Southwestern 4A conference win over Independence Sept. 14.
The Eagles record will drop to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Independence is now 3-4-1, 1-1.
Both schools immediately self-reported to local and state offices. Each will pay a $500 fine to the N.C. High School Athletic Association.
Ardrey Kell athletics director Cheryl Feeney said the Knights football player, who is a reserve and doesn’t play much, dressed for the Weddington game after not being at practice for two days.
“Everybody was excited about the game,” Feeney said. “He was excited and he told coach (Adam Hastings) he was good. But his physical had expired.”
Feeney said her school does all it can to verify eligibility and would make further changes to ward off any future issues.
“It’s tough,” she said, “because all of the ADs and coaches work very hard to ensure we have everything we need.”
East Meck principal Rick Parker said his soccer coach does not work at the school and did not know the player did not attend school the day of the Independence game. Rules require at least a half-day’s attendance to participate in games.
“The next day, when (the student) came to school, we found out and self-reported,” Parker said. “We’ve got to do the right thing. He shouldn’t have played but he did. I spoke to the principal at Independence. It was nothing intentional. (The coach) didn’t realize the boy was not in school.”

Prov. Day coach Hardin goes for 300th win Thursday
Thursday night, Providence Day football coach Bruce Hardin, who turned 66 Sunday, will go for his 300th career win and try to join an exclusive club. Hardin’s Chargers (3-0) play at Charlotte Catholic (4-0).
According to N.C. High School Athletic Association records, seven football coaches in state history have won 300 games heading into the current system: Bob Paroli (387 at six schools, including Fayetteville 71st), Jack Holley (380 at three schools, including South Columbus), Tom Brown (352 at Bunker Hill and Maiden), B.W. Holt (321 at six schools, including Southwestern Randolph), Daryl Allen (305 at Ahoskie and Hertford County) and Babe Howell (301 at Sylva-Wester, Smoky Mounty, Avery County).
Charlotte Catholic coach Jim Oddo got his 300th win last season and former Independence coach Tom Knotts, now at Dutch Fork (S.C.) has 298 career victories.
Hardin, a Forest City Chase High graduate, earned his undergraduate degree at Appalachian State. He’s coached at Olympic, Harding, West Charlotte, Kannapolis Brown and Providence. He was also an assistant coach at The Citadel and the U.S. Military Academy.
Last year, Hardin – a former Shrine Bowl and East-West All-Star game coach – was inducted into the NCHSAA Hall of Fame. His teams won two state titles, including what he said was his most memorable win: a 1997 state title at Kannapolis Brown. His twin sons, Blair and Justin, played on that team.
Blair is now coach at Indian Trail Porter Ridge, which is 4-0 and has outscored opponents 194-37. Justin is head coach at 3-1 Weddington, which plays Porter Ridge at home Oct. 22.
“They’re both having good years and I’m proud of them,” Hardin said. “They’re making it on their own. We talk occasionally, but I try to stay out of the way, and I have no desire to play them. I go to a jayvee game (of theirs) when I can and if I can break free from here, I’ll go watch them coach, but I won’t play them. I’ll let them play each other.”

VIDEO: big hits and highlights from Butler-Richmond
Here are some highlights, shot by the Butler side, from Saturday's big game. It's heavy on the Butler side, which you'd expect given the source, but I thought I would share to give folks an idea of the size and speed of both teams, two of the three best in the state.
