So why is Butler seeded lower than Richmond Senior?

Butler, the reigning 4AA champ, finished the season unbeaten at 11-0 and with a 26-game win streak but was seeded third for the N.C. football playoffs behind Mallard Creek and Richmond.

Butler beat Richmond 21-7 on Sept. 11.

The NCHSAA allows teams who play 11 games to drop one non-conference game from their record for playoff purposes, because not all of the 390 teams play the extra game. That extra game is allowed so schools can make more money, although they must return a portion of the proceeds over to the NCHSAA to use for its Endowment Fund.

When Richmond dropped the Butler loss, there were three unbeaten 4AA teams in the West. The rules, voted on by the N.C. Football Coaches Association, calls for a hat draw when three or more teams are tied with the same record. Head-to-head is not looked at when there are three or more teams involved.

The NCHSAA’s Tucker said the same thing happened last year with West Forsyth, Jamestown Ragsdale and Greensboro Dudley last season in the 4A West playoffs. Ragsdale beat Dudley during the regular season but ended up with lower seed. Ragsdale had to play at Dudley in the third round of the playoffs. Dudley won 13-7.

“After that,” Tucker said, “what we suggested was that the football coaches association discuss this and if they wanted to come up with some provision in trying to settle that…we had no problem with it. They met and sent forward no recommendation, so we did what we did last year.”

So if both teams advance to the third round at Thanksgiving, Butler goes to Richmond Senior.

“It’s just the way the system is set up,” Bulldogs coach Newsome said. “Whether it’s fair or not, I don’t know. I don’t understand if you’ve got three teams tied and you both played an 11th game, why you can’t use that 11th game record as a tie-breaker. I remember when (former Independence coach Tom) Knotts used to always say if you’re the defending state champ and you went undefeated that should be your bonus (being a No. 1 overall seed). I don’t disagree with that now. Back then, I never thought I’d be in the same situation. How many times do you figure that happen in the future? You win the state and you go undefeated the next year?”

Newsome said he’s not mad about his team’s seed.

“That’s the rule,” he said. “If I thought the rules were against us, I would be upset. But I told our coaches for weeks this could possibly happen, that we could end up in a three-way tie with Richmond Couty and have to to there and play. We’ve been unlucky all year long so why not keep being unlucky now, I guess. But it’ll work out. Do I like it? No? Over Thanksgiving, there’s more people at home and coming to games for their fan base, but hey, that’s what we’ll do.”

Nice whining by the Butler coach. They have not been "unlucky", they have acted like punks and thugs and lost key players because of it. If coach was teaching his players to act like good citizens he would have a lot more credibility.

In Scotland County we are always told that its RAIDER MAGIC - when the Scots are up 21-3 in the first quarter and the yellow flags start to fall - RAIDER MAGIC - when it was a three way tie a few years back and they had to draw straws at hardees - RAIDER MAGIC- Scots dominate a game in every fashion but somehow loose to Richmond - RAIDER MAGIC....When the Scots are up in the final minutes by two TD'S and the yellow flags start to fall - RAIDER MAGIC..I sure would like to have some of that RAIDER MAGIC.....

There magic will run out again when they face Butler. It will be the same results Butler will beat them!!!!!

The coach is not their mama and daddy. That is the job of the parents to teach their children how to act.

Unlucky all year...Way to teach your kids, Coach!!!!!!!kids making self inflicted mistakes is not bad luck for the program.......its bad decisions by kids that affected their program......its from within that caused that not bad luck!!!!Good job coach!!!!keep playing that one!!1

If you are the best whats a little semantics? Theres no such thing as home field advantage. Theres visitors stands and you can have just as many fans at home as away if thats the problem.
Butler HC needs bitch slapped anyway for all the junk he has pulled.

RC will sweep 4AA. 7 state titles and 95% win ratio since 1972. These johnny come latelys are hilarious. Wheres Indy these days?

It is not the seat you have at the start of play off. It is the seat you have at the end. I'm a Raider Fan and hope we get that seat, but if we don't, we'll be back.

Well, rules are rules, no matter how lame they might be.

My prediction for 4AA state champs is either Butler or Mallard Creek.

Butler more so than Mallard Creek, but if Butler gets upset, then MC wins it.

Richmond lost 7-21 to Butler... good luck to yall haha

Doesn't matter what seeding Butler gets; the end result will be the same as it has all season: Another "W" in the stats column. Greensboro Page, Richmond Senior, Mallard Creek. they can get a dose of rumble football anytime they want it. You can come running through your banners, but you wll crawl bach and you wll be doing the whining.

Butler's gameplan: run the ball, just run over them, smash them and kill them with the run, then break out the pass and rape their secondary.

Anonymous said...

Butler will win the 4AA- hands down. I'm from Greensboro, too. Hoping the Smith Golden Eagles win the 4A, but they have a long road.

UNLUCKY?!?!?!?!
This clown is ALLOWED to recruit players which is against CMS rules.
He is ALLOWED to curse out and physically threaten other coaches.
His players are ALLOWED to smoke dope on campus in exchange for a 1 game suspention.
He is ALLOWED to ignore his players being arrested for rape until after the "big game".
He is incapable of making a decision on the playing status of a player that just killed someone.
He loans players his keys to the school so they can use it for the purposes of having sex. Then he is ALLOWED to remain employed for this action (but the pricipal is fired).

How can anyone be ALLOWED to be the biggest low life in a major US city, be ALLOWED to compete by a different set of rules than others, and then have the audacity to say he is unlucky.

It is being handed to you on a silver platter you moron!

Butler beat Richmand before and will have no trouble doing it again. They will then go on to beat MC and then win states.

I have known Coach Newsome since the mid 90's. I was a player while he was a coach at Anson. He is far from a whiner, he tells it like it is. I assure you he has his team ready to win no matter what position Butler is placed in.

I don't have a dog (no pun intended) in this fight but the NC High School league is the most messed up bunch I have ever seen. Not just football either. Take a clue from some other states guys. These problems have been solved a long time ago. eveyone will not be happy but at leaset be fair. Jeez.

are you kidding me?????

Mike Newsome coached my kid and supported , taught , loved and help mold my son into the great young man he is now. AND HE WASNT A STARTER.He was there at his graduation and gave him a great big hug at the ceremony. Fortunately, my son has a dad. For many of these kids that do not have a father he is there, standing in as their father and you have no idea how much he does for these kids. He is a great coach and teacher and cares for his players and it is trajic that pitiful human beings are allowed to come on an anonymous message board and say these things about this man . I am blessed to have had Mike Newsome coach my son and you would be too.

sounds like someone is ALLOWED to post on mommy and daddy's computer and is STILL bitter about whatever school that Butler beat the snot out of.

Get facts straight. You dont even know what your talking about. Better yet, it sounds more to me like YOUR the one whining about all the stuff Butler is "ALLOWED" to do. Those issues have apparently been dealt with by CMS. Who are you, the Blog Police?

Do you really think Butler or Newsome care what you think? or that your little "slander parade" is going to make a difference at the end of the season?

How about you quit your whining about Butler and enjoy your off-season.

Anonymous said...

You guys that are defending Newsome do so from past stories but like the rest of us don't defend his unbelievable actions lately. What has he done? Refuse to sit a star after he drove illegally (twice) and killed someone...refused to sit someone who didn't tell him he had been arrested for felony rape and who forced himself on a girl after she said no...didn't sit a player who had sex on campus..wouldn't let redistricted players to Indy practice last spring which led to many of them falling behind when they got to Indy or deciding to rent apartments next to Butler. Glad he hugged your son at graduation but this man needs to go. CMS should investigate, especially the apartment scam.

Anonymous said...

hey dude,

guess you have never heard of the ACL but HE CANT SIT A KID that has not suspended by CMS for things they do OFF campus. He would get his butt sued. He has no choice but to play them. There also is no apartment scam, if parents want to rent an apartment for their family to live in full time to play for the best football program in the state he HAS NO CHOICE BUT TO PLAY THEM-THEY ARE INSIDE THE DISTRICT OF THE SCHOOL LEGALLY.By the way , Deion Walker did not play Friday in case you didnyt hear. Some kids dont come from the best backgrounds and need football to keep them from taking trajic wrong turns in society. Quit producing slanderous statements or state your full name and address and the facts to prove your lies.

every single last one of you is stupid. look at some of these comments....this is high school football!!! chill out, take a deep breath and get off your high horse. it's not in his job description to take care of his players 24/7....this isn't college football. most players have parents am i right? well hey do your damn job and teach your son respect, newsome is a coach and yes he instills good moral character and values he doesnt have to or need to baby them and follow them around 24/7 like he's their dad or some crap

Anonymous said...

it is very clear to me that anyone taking this many unfounded shots at Butler and their coach is obviously jealous of Butler's success...these people, especially if Indy "fans", are just taking out on Butler, what happened to them all the years they were successful...and for anyone who comes out firing all of this crap oughta take a good look in the mirror...you probably spend your personal life making yourself feel good at the expense of others. Must be nice to be all high & mighty.

Once again the NCHSAA has played the favorites card. Putting Richmond Senior in the West is ridiculous. It's just to give Raleigh and Fayetteville a chance of having a representative in the State Championship game. If Richmond was in the East where they belong then they would be the #1 seed and either Butler or Mallard Creek would be #1 in the West. Instead now we have the 3 strongest teams in the state all in the West. Way to go NCHSAA! Funny that in every other sport Richmond is always seeded in the East.

Anonymous said...

You people are rediculous. That is all.

Anonymous said...

High school football is fast becoming like Nascar. Rules are changed to meet the needs of whomever needs them the most. Why doesn't the NCHSAA make a set of rules and stick by them. Changing them every year tends to send the message that they are changing them just to make "some" school happy. In this case, either Butler or Richmond will benefit!

Anonymous said...

Can you imagine what kind of football team you would have if you only had 1 high school in Charlotte? For that matter only 1 high school in Union County. Richmond wouldn't have a chance!

Anonymous said...

Rednecks are funny!

Anonymous said...

Good point above. Comparing Richmond to Charlotte teams is foolish. I wish all the Charlotte teams could be combined to see what would happen to Richmond. They would get DEMOLISHED! Richmond is having trouble keeping up with Charlotte schools, yet they keep talking trash.

Anonymous said...

Even Butler doesn't have an unlimited supply of talent. When you have Walker, he and Edwards compliment each other. They lose Walker, they lose that one, two punch. You will hear it here first. Butler goes to Richmond county and their winning streak ends.

Anonymous said...

First and foremost, quit asking your Butler educated kid how to spell the word "tragic". It doesn't have a J. Secondly, don't be so confident that CMS doesn't have concerns about the Butler roster and, even more so, Newsome's lack of class and control. It has been a topic of discussion downtown on more than one occasion. Lastly, as for myself, I don't think attacking the kids in these forums is fair. We are talking about kids that are making mistakes. (Be it some of these mistakes are horrific in their outcome.) The problem is Newsome's inability to recognize the need to address these mistakes. He thinks that because the "Rule Book" says a misdemeanor charge doesn't disqualify a kid from playing then it is ALWAYS ok. The rule book was not designed to address people being killed. Some things have to be acted upon without a rule book. Common sense and decency has to come into play somewhere in the process and Newsome never fails to exercise poor judgement.

Would someone in the Charlotte- Mecklenburg School System commission a feasibility study on CMS Schools departing the NCHSAA please?

Vickie Hamilton, please do your job! CMS has outgrown the NCHSAA association and it's no longer beneficial to our schools to remain a part of it.

9 out of the 16 4AA Playoff teams in the Western brackets are CMS Schools.

Here's the plan upon departing NCHSAA!
1. form three conferences with only Mecklenburg County Schools.
2. allow those schools to play an 11 game season. 6 conference 5 non-conference.
3. non conference games could be played against schools in either of the other two conferences and/or schools in:York County,SC, Chester County, SC, Spartanburg County, SC, Greenville County, SC, Cherokee County, SC or other state's schools provided that those trips outside of the Carolinas are paid for by booster clubs.
4. Establish a City Championship playoff system amongst those three conferences.
5. Charlotte City Champion would play against the SC Big 16 Champion at Bank of America Stadium the week before the Shrine Bowl. T

There's a one week gap for SC schools between their State Championship Weekend and the Shrine Bowl.

Doing this will:
1. re-establish better rivalries amongst CMS Schools.
2. Save money for CMS whose cash strapped anyway. There's a cost for putting buses on the roads (fuel, payroll, food, etc).
3. Monies from the gate that are currently being sent to NCHSAA can then be shared among CMS Athletic Programs.

Please, Please let's step in to the 21st Century and do what's best for the kids and the future of CMS Athletic Programs.

I used to play for Coach Newsome. I was there when he took over the Head Coaches position back in 2000-2001. I can tell you from experience that Newsome does not whine, nor is it tolerated on the field or in the classroom. As far as Newsome teaching his players to be good citizens, I also know for a fact that he does. He always told us that you were a student before you were an athlete. I am a product of Coach Newsome both as a coach and a student. Without him as a coach and teacher I would have never gotten to where I am today. Thanks to him I went to college and I am now serving my country as a United States Marine. Every school in every county of every state is going to have some students that cause problems. Students that play on sports teams. Take Duke University for example. But the point is, I dont think that you should put the blame on Coach Newsome, for a few students who's parents should be teaching their children to be good people, messing up. As far as I am concerned, Coach Newsome takes on more responsibility than some of the students parents do as is. I guess the point to this is that everyone here who has written something slanderous towards Coach Newsome, I hope you have said what you wanted. In the end, Newsome and the Dog Pound is going to win state again this year.

Go Bulldogs!!!

This is getting hard to beleive.
Reading comprehension at Butler must be dismal.
READ THIS SLOWLY! Nobody thinks Mike is responsible for the actions of the guys that have had problems with the law. He is not raising those boys. He is NOT TO BLAME FOR THEIR SHORTCOMINGS!
GOT IT? IT IS NOT MIKES FAULT; IT IS THE BOYS FAULT AND POTENTIONALLY THEIR PARENTS FAULT.

NOW.....It IS his fault when these mistakes are rewarded with being able to play on Friday night. He covered for Lemay, he covered for Sombo, he lets campus dope smokers come back after 1 game and he had to check the rule book to see if it said anything about having to sit a player if he kills someone.

It is NOT Mikes fault for the kids actions but IT IS MIKES FAULT FOR MIKES ACTIONS!

Anonymous said...

It is Newsome's team. He can sit a player from anything from being late to practice to killing someone or anything in between. Just because he doesn't doesn't mean he can't. Get real.

Anonymous said...

funny someone with run on sentences and double negatives critiques my spelling, who taught you to write Tommy????
Is your season finished down in SC and your that bored>>
Lemay: never covered up or did anything to allow him to play. Kid was caought redhanded and never stepped on field after he was caught

Sombo: coaches knew nothing of arrest as CMS did not either, CMS and Newsome were told of arrest and kid was immediately suspended. Kid then had all chagres dropped and returned to school. Kid has lawyer , Mike had no choice but to play kid. What could he have suspended him for....having sex??????
Walker: never stepped foot on practice field or game field after accident. And I did say accident, kid UNINTENTIONALLY hurt someone in an accident. He was charged with misdemeanor, how many kids are walking around CMS schools today that were charged with misdemeanors htis past weekend????
I feel like Walker should be allowed to play. The punishment he faces, which is liflong guilt for killing someone is 1000 times worse than being suspended from a football team.
I also feel terribly sorry for the family of the victim as well.
So now that you have THE FACTS and many testimonies from former players of Newsome . You can go back to collecting your football equipment and planning off season workouts Mr Knotts

Everybody that is commenting on this issue need to get a life. Its happened to Indy, Butler, Richmond and all of the other school that were tied with the same record. STOP WHINING LIKE BABIES!!!!! Please. Im a Raider fan and I could care less where we play. If it was at Butler then I would gas up the car and keep it moving. Just play your game each week and handle business! That's the only thing you need to worry about. Yall sound like some 10 yr olds.

Everybody saying oh Butler is going to beat Richmond again blah blah blah, need to remember....just because you play someone and beat them doesn't automatically mean you will win the game. If we continuing winning, and all the powers align, we will have to play Providence and Scotland. I dont want to play neither one because your team gets the "oh we already beat them attitude" and the other team is thinking about the loss so they are going to play harder.

Also, yall anonymous posters are to funny to me!

GreenandGold said...

Also, I read a comment about I wish we could take all of the county and make one team like Richmond County. We would kill them. Can you use a little common sense for a second? I am so tired of people saying this excuse it really gets on my nerves. Lets see, Im guessing here but Mecklenburg Cty pop. 700,000. Richmond Cty pop. maybe 30,000. NEWSFLASH.....YALL WOULD KILL US!!! How can you compare that? What is funny is that I read that we are trying to catch up or compete with the Charlotte schools or something like that. Richmond has been consistent since the 70's. Other than West Charlotte, how many Charlotte schools can say that? Im waiting..... Another thing, its funny how Richmond County always get picked on about being a one county high school, but nothing is said about Anson, Scotland, and Hoke just to name a few. Im pretty sure there are others, but Im not familiar with them. Im just saying.

I TOTALLY agree with the poster above in regards to CMS Schools departing the NCHSAA. Perhaps Charlotte Catholic would join the CMS Schools departing as well.

The time has come and it would be perfect to do so pending the next realignment.

This has to be the same Newsome crybaby who coached down at Parkwood a good while back. They had to run him punk butt off. He whined constantly and sucked. That was before the new schools and Parkwood was killing everybody. Good riddence to Mr. whinybutt Newsome.

Rockingham/(Later changed to Richmond Senior High School) has won 15 state championships. Has any other school in NC done that? No we could not win if Charlotte combined all schools into one, but that would be a very big school house. Lets get real, there are at least ten schools in play off that could win it all this year, one happens to be Richmond County. " I'm going to enjoy games.

All the CMS schools in their own league. Make accomodations for Catholic, Country Day, Latin, Christian, and Providence Day to also join and you would have a fantastic league.

For all you people touting Butler's win against Richmond earlier this season, please do something; go back and watch the game again. If any of you saved this game with Time Warner Cable's on Demand, please, watch the game again and if you're honest with yourself you'll see how your team didn't deserve that win. On Butler's second score, watch the replay; Ferguson roles out and while he's looking downfield, a Butler lineman can be seen blocking a pursuing raider in the back, and the odd thing is, there is an official looking directly at the illegal block. This can easily be seen on the replay if you go back and watch it. Again, on Butler's next touchdown, Uriah Lemay catches a pass and is running down the sideline, behind him is a raider defender and a bulldog, the raider is running trying to catch Lemay and the Butler player is seen pushing the raider in the back, and yes, there is an official watching this happen. If you don't believe this, watch it. Besides these obvious fouls which would've wiped away Butler's last two touchdowns, watch the entire third quarter. On nearly every possession the Butler players would horsecollar or yank on the facemask of the Raider ballcarriers. These are some very dirty players and if Newsome and company endorses this type of play, that speaks volumes about his character. If you do go back and watch these facemasks and horsecollars, pause it when the foul occurs and you'll see an official looking directly at the foul as it happens. I won't be so bold as to say that Butler had an official or two in their pocket, but I will say that the entire second half of the game was tainted by these officials. I feel like if the game was called by a decent officiating crew the result may have turned out different. I know these accusations may sound wild but please watch the third quarter and especially anytime a raider gets the ball, and see how many times a facemask or horsecollar happens; I counted 7 times with no call. Oh, and there is a spear that happens to Flip Ellerbe late in the 4th quarter by Frost. For those people who feel good about that Butler victory, please, I implore you to go back and watch the game from an objective point of view. If you're honest, you'll know in your heart that game was tainted.

The only reason people say that they wish they could combine teams is because Richmond fans come on here saying we have won 1,284 state titles. Your county has one school. All the players go to that one school. It's not a fair comparison. There is not alot of CMS schools that have been open long enough to have won 15 state titles, Butler for one opened in 1997. Get over yourselves, if you don't want to hear people say these things then get off your high horse and compare something that makes sense.

Correction to above: There are alot of CMS schools that have NOT been open long enough to have won 15 state titles.

Forget about high horse, we are talking football. Richmond has a good football program and so does Charlotte Schools. Every year brings different players and different winners. The past years are history, lets support our present teams and enjoy the play off. We have a lot of young men giving their best effort and they deserve all the support we can give them.

To the genius that said learn how to write Tommy your season is over and your bored; well here are the facts. Tommy and Dutch Fork has now won 10 straight games, just defeated Irmo, 38-35 and have home field for the playoffs and are ranked 11th in the state now after starting 1-2. In 3-4 years maybe sooner, Knotts is WELL on his way to building ANOTHER POWERHOUSE, and with the new facilities and administrative backing at this fine school, will be a national power AGAIN. He will come back here and demolish Butler, MCreek and anybody else with the nerve to scrimmage or schedule him. JUST WAIT, 3 years or sooner, the way things are already going for him now, SOONER!!. The only thing boring Knotts is by how many points will he be winning by!!! He's back, oh yea, and sooner than excpected, HE'S BACK!!!!!

My prediction for this year is if the Walker kid is done for the year, Mallard Creek will win state title, if Walker plays, Butler wins. Butler will win in Rich. Co., not as intimidating to play as you might think( Indy almost scored 50 there last year) before Butler whipped them the next week in semis. I wouldn't be surprised if Butler won without Walker, due to the great linebackers they have. Williams has not faced a defense like Butler's since he's been in high scool. Butler may not be able to score enough to beat Mallard Creek without Walker. If Walker plays, Butler ROLLS to second straight title.

Anonymous said...

Richmond is one small town (small school) that has a good football program. Why would you stop at putting two or three teams together, in order to beat Richond? Why not get players from all schools in Charlotte? Get real, Mallard appears to be the favorite, then Butler, to win it all this year. But "it ain't over till its over". I respect all three schools and on a given night, I would not count either one out. Neither one may make the final game. Lets play ball.

Anonymous said...

Walker is done for the year. Butler will have to rely more than ever on its' passing game.

Now, for Mallard Creek....very good team, except for one thing. As Marquis goes, so goes Mallard Creek. He is a very good quarterback, but Mallard Creek is too one dimensional. Mallard Creek did not play the competition Butler played. Other than Vance, they really haven't been tested.

Butler's saving grace, for now, is its' defense. With Walker done for the year, Butler will have a scrimmage against East Forsyth and win by three or four scores against Page. Richmond will knock them off in Rockingham, then face Mallard Creek in Charlotte, to see who can outscore the other.

Then for the state crown, whoever comes out of the west will take the title home.

By the way, I have no ties to Charlotte schools or any other school actually. I'm just a neutral observer.... a follower of high school football for many years in several states.

Now Butler's defense will have to step up.

Now for some fun, highly unscientific early week predictions for this week.

Richmond 30 Providence 10
Scotland 21 Northwest Guilford 10
Greensboro Page 28 West Forsyth 13
Butler 56 East Forsyth 10

Mallard Creek 57 Olympic 6
Ardrey Kell 35 South Meck 20

Charlotte doesn't have to combine all the schools to see how good the football team will be. You only have 11 on the field at a time and it could be as simple as an all-star team......OOOHHH we already have that! Mike has illegally recruited the best players from all over the SW4A and the Indian Trail community. I know Tommy did it too but Vickie has always had a history of allowing one school to cheat so CMS can steal money from the state.
If you think this sounds crazy, you should have been in the meeting I was in yesterday at CMS. They don't even deny that Mike is a cheat and they support Vickie's agenda.

The rules for your review

Page 53 NCHSAA 2010/11 Football Information Handbook

If teams in any 'tier' of the seeding process have identical records, we will look at head-to-head competition first. If they have played one another, the winner receives the higher seed. If they haven't played one another, a draw is made for the higher seed.
Any non-conference game that is dropped for seeding purposes may still be used in breaking a tie as described above, i.e. two teams in the same half of a bracket (both in the large, west 4AA bracket) are equal seeds from their individual conferences (both #2s) and have identical records (both 9-1). We will first try to break the tie(s) by looking at head-to-head competition. If these schools played each other in a non-conference game, but one of them didn't count that game for seeding purposes, the game will still be used to break the tie, with the team that lost getting the lower seed.

I have thought about the travel cost Butler will have , if they make it to play Richmond and want to be fair. To help on this cost, Raider fans could provide crying towels for each player, for their trip home. But, it may happen, that the only way they will get to see the game in Rockingham, is to buy tickets. Go RAIDERS

Did Butler get screwed for the seeding yes they did, Does Butler have a reason to be upset and mad about the playoff seeding yes they do. DID Butler beat Richmond in Sept. Yes THEY did. I was at the game did Butler players try to lift the players helmets off when they hit them? When I first saw them hitting our running backs I was like where is the flag they do not suppose to hit like that but they keep on hitting them the same way the officials saw it so I figured it was all legal. I really think either team will win the next time around and whosever wins that game will beat M.C., BUTLER has earned my the right to talk trash, INDEPENDENCE does not have a dog in the fight,(I have short term memory) didn't we beat you guys at your place in '08! CCMS Vs. RC come on guys that will never happen. Richmond only has 2,000 students in the high school that's why we only have one school you guys avg. 2000 per Private School please don't hate on our tradition just give us props about what we have accomplished.

To Charlotte Football Fans,

First of all if you had any type of knowledge or common sense you would STOP using the fact that Richmond County just has one high school and that is why we win championships. We do have one high school, but that is not why we win state championships. Say it is because something is in the water, it's the farmland, or say it is because that is all we have. To say it is b/c of having one highschool is idiotic and far from the truth. The truth is Richmond County produces awesome athletes. Most smaller surrounding Counties in NC only have one high school. For instance: Hoke, Moore, Scotland, Anson, just to name a few. That in itself explains that it is the athletes' talent, unparallel fan support, and desire that produces Raider Magic and as an end result State Championship are won! In addition, Richmond Senior is the ONLY high school that plays agains East and West schools. Even your beloved Mecklenburg County Schools does not do that! Only if they meet at States. We (Richmond Raiders) does it in regular season and doing playoffs. Stop being jealous and envious of Raider Pride and Raider Magic. We are a team and we are a family! Regardless of us being one county, You can't take away from us our pride, desire to win and most definitely, what you want the most: our State Championships! You will never know what is to be a Raider unless you are a Raider! Say what you want to say: it doesn't matter! We do what we do and that is win State Championships! Before I close, Raiders are not illegal like Mecklenburg County Players because that is the purpose of having to sign the Play Fair documents at the beginning of each sporting event. You have to do that because your school system is based on lies to win Championships. That is how you won them in the past (including Butler) Their parents there just had sense enough to move to the neighborhoods where their child could play football legally. Therefore, in the end you do combine your players. Richmond County just doesn't have to relocate their residence is the only difference. Don't get mad at us for that. Since you have a larger county (kids moving from all over)that should give you more opportunity to win vs RC. You actually should win the states EVERY year. Since you all don't, What does that REALLY say about those Raiders? We haven't won consecutively like Indy (that's b/c they were illegal), but we have won as many! If Coach Knotts can give us our respect, why can't you? Let's keep the facts straight and Let's Play some football! To the original Green and Gold, Do what you do!

All trash talk aside, how important is the seeding to Richmond Senior? Very important. In fact, I would say huge!!

Going back 10 years, to 1999, Richmond's playoff record against teams from outside of Charlotte: 15-2. Richmond's record against Charlotte teams: 13-8.

What is Richmond's playoff record against Charlotte teams when played in Rockingham? Answer: 11-5.

What is Richmond's playoff record, against Charlotte teams, when played in Charlotte? Their playoff record is a dismal 1-3.

Their lone win on the road was against Harding 70-16. Two losses were against Independence, 2003 - 20-18 and 2004 - 47-19. In 2007, they lost on the road at West Charlotte, 49-27.

How big was the draw keeping Richmond in their pod? HUGE!!

As a former Butler player, I think RC is an outstanding program and commend them for the feats they have accomplished. Doesnt really make sense to make comments about all Charlotte vs. Richmond. Having played at Richmond in 2003, the venue didnt really have any impact on us. It seemed as if the Raiders just found a way to get it done. They were down in the fourth and threw a pass that tipped off my fingers and was deflected into the star running back's hands and he took off for a long touchdown. The crowd was pretty quiet until then, then they erupted. Seems like they have great coaches and great people supporting them. Dont underestimate Providence as I know you wont as you have already played them. They are a good team and could jump up and bite you if you're looking ahead. Good luck throughout the playoffs....until you face Butler :). Looking forward to a good game.

I just wanted to say that Richmond school location is in the east and they have been place in the west for the last 10 years, and usually the toughest bracket section. and they have not complain any during those years as far as the coaching staff. I think that they are not following the guidelines as far as placing teams in the brackets but that another story. butler should be number 1 but you all are just unfortunate this time, all you all can do now is play the game. as far as the coach speaking out and complaining can be a bigger distraction on the ultimate goal for the football team. as far as the potential butler and Richmond game, both hqve to take care of business first, the precursor to your fall is pride so stay humble.

Anonymous said...

Just wondering....why is RC put on the West side of the bracket? It would seem to make it more competitive if they were on the other side of the bracket. Everyone always says the winner will come from the West, while if RC is on the East, who knows?

Anonymous said...

I wonder how the Providence players would feel about these comments?

They've lost five games. Doesn't sound too impressive.

Let's look closer. Losses to Richmond (10-1), Charlotte Catholic (11-0), ranked #2 in the latest statewide AP poll for 3A. South Meck (7-4) and in Midwest pod, Butler, after trailing Butler only 14-0 after three quarters and Ardrey Kell, after giving up three or four scores due to turnovers.

If I were Richmond, I would not overlook this team.

Glad to know that its all about FOOTBALL in other counties also! Since Im not a creative writer I will do my best to express my thoughts. First we need to give all teams a high five for the entertainment that they do give us on Friday nights! Being that Im from RICHMOND county I can tell you the things are also swept under the rug during FOOTBALL season here also! In 2008 during football season we had a student to pour liquor into a teachers drink. This student continued playing FOOTBALL the remainder of the season and was suspended from school immediately after FOOTBALL season had ended. Also I remember years ago a student was failing several classes during FOOTBALL season but was still able to play FOOTBALL...when the season finally ended he started playing BASKETBALL and was felling several classes. Guess what...they put him off the basketball team for that...but why didnt they put him off while playing FOOTBALL? Yes Sir...his mother was ANGRY as HELL about this situation. In RICHMOND COUNTY its not who you are its who you know! Coach Newsome is a great guy. You cant fault HIM for other's action! He is only their coach! You cant fault the PARENTS either! Put yourself in their shoes. Ask yourself this question...what if that was my child/children? How would I fell about my childs actions. How many of us have drove without a LICENSE? What if that child had a LICENSE at the time of the accident would you still be so NEGATIVE?

Anonymous said...

So many people are lashing out at COACH NEWSOME about his students he coach. Let's talk about CHRISTIAN LEMAY...that child was done wrong only because he was AFRICAN AMERICAN and she was a CAUCASIAN. Yes he was a willing participant in having SEX at school! They both made a stupid decision to have SEX at SCHOOL. But because he was BLACK and a FOOTBALL. Not one time did the Chanel 9 News/Charlotte Observer state students. We must stop this now for the future. I dont just fought the students for their actions...I fought every body that had dealings with these children. Yes it does start at home. Everyone that's was involved in these kids life played a major part of this. The parents should have been teaching those kids about morals and respect for themself and others...while the teacher/coaches/athority figures reinforcing the rules daily about consequences coming behind their actions and maybe none of this would have happen! To tell you the truth about these so called rape cases...its always when they get caught and its a mixed couple! Im not for it...but not against it either...so who's gonna come out on top!

probably the stupidist thread ever written, I hope you are joking. Please dont bring race into this conversation and make yourself look more stupid thasn you already look

This post is strangely entertaining... I am a Butler Fan, but I am not a Newsome Fan. My son plays football for Butler (as a starter for several years). He does so because he loves football, in spite of Newsome. Here is an insider’s viewpoint. Newsome tries to instill confidence in his players to a fault. Confidence and invincibility is misunderstood by his players as translates into arrogance and entitlement. I’ve seen it on and off the field by both players and coaches. Newsome actions are being imitated by his players. “It’s not a foul unless the ref sees it”, “hurt someone”… Look at the comments earlier… Something is not Right…

To the Richmond Co. Fan, I am aware of that player pouring liquor in the teacher drink"wrong" he actually came to school "DRUNK" after the State Championship weekend and was suspended. I am a former student and player for the Raider I witness several students get away with murder and nothing was done until after football season. I can recall one of the best LB's to play for Richmond did not get to play his senior year because he committed a crime summer of '97 but was found not guilty (Atari Ratliff)D.Barnes who does not play, to be able to play for Daryl Barnes you have to be a good citizen before you become a good football player.

Important Message:

Time to allow new impartial new blood to cover HS football at the Disturber. Younger talent needed badly. Out with the old farts like LW and in with the new blood.

There greatly needs to be a tenure limit rule by the NCHSAA on old fart head coaches who overstay too long for their greed and ego running up stats for their own glory. No coach should ever coach more than 10 years at the same NCHSAA school in football since they become to cozy with the system itself and sports writers etc. The age limit of head coaches should be cut at 50-55 max. Weed out these old farts and get new blood in the ranks in NC. Nobody gives a rats azz how you take advantage of the system and your record book stats. Nauseating.

This good ole boy old fart system in NCHSAA head coaching and the sports media needs to end. Send them all to pasture. Stop the favotitism and milking the system.

NCHSAA MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association is to create and foster a wholesome athletic environment through fair competition, strong leadership, effective programs and healthful practices, encouraging excellence and developing productive citizens.

Def agree with the time and age limit on dinosaur high school football head coaches for those morons too stupid to retire. Screw their records. Its not about you. Too bad the NCAA wont limit college coaches too. Look at the Paterno ego maniac at age 84 just for his own glory. Insane. At least FSU sent Bowden to feed with the old cows.

As far as the media they need to switch up sports writers to news writers or vice versa or hand out them a pink slip. Wertz has his favorites and his own agenda but he really needs to be doing college and pros and still has few yrs left but in the college and pros section.

Anonymous said...

Retire Sorensen and insert Wertz in his spot.

To the Butler parent. I played for Newsome and never once heard him tell any of us to hurt a player or its not a foul if the refs dont see it. When we watche film, we would actually get chewed out if we committed fouls, even if they werent flagged. I never had arrogance or the feeling of entitlement because I played footbal. Some kids just make poor decisions because they were raised wrong, has nothing to do with Newsome.

What I love about this conversation is this. It can be Butler for a few years,Indy For seven, West CLT,Mallard Creek,71st,Jack Britt,G.Page, or any other 4a,4aa power at a given period of time. However It is always Richmond! Who will be next to ride the wave of Championship enjoyment? Richmond County is sixth in the nation in winning percentages(82.5%)for teams playing 300 games. We lose and win to the best in the state. We play football. We have played it at high level in the 4aa divsion for 35+ years. We are always in the hunt for a Championship and we are always the hunted. We know how to win and if you come to the "Big House" and beat us,our fans will come to thier feet and applaud you.
The road the Chapelhill(US 1)runs through RC. If you are going to win the State Championship you are going to play the Raiders, year after year. These are the facts. Look up the records. We are the past and the present, odds are we will be there in years to come. By the way where is Indy? HOME! LMAO

If you take an allstar team from Mecklenburg High Schools and play Richmond High School annually you would get yo butt kicked 9 out of 10 times or more year after year. Thats how much better we are.

Whine all you want about the seedings. The real joke is that NCHSAA lets teams with 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 wins participate in the playoffs. Sounds like T-Ball to me.

Can any of you people write an objective comment, or is it always trash talk??

What is it with you Butler and Richmond people? You both have to get through tough opponents first.

I have followed high school football in six states. There is nothing new here.

Richmond County has one high school. I witnessed the same thing in Maryland, at the 2A and 1A level. Fort Hill and Allegany high schools are in far western Maryland, in Cumberland County. They had football powerhouses year in and year out. But, they only had two schools for the county.

As a neutral observer, who is not from this area, all of this trash talk can make one hope both lose.

Richmond County has one high school. Personally, I believe it is a testament to Mecklenberg County to have these contenders spread among different schools.

Providence will be dangerous for Richmond, depending on what Providence team shows up.

Yet, looking at the records, no wonder there is such trash talk.

Checking back 10 years, Richmond's record is 138-16-1. Impressive!

During those 10 years, Richmond's record against non-Charlotte teams is 120-7-1. Again, this is impressive.

Their record against Charlotte teams is 18-9. Good, but not quite as impressive.

For the playoffs, their record over the last 10 years, is 27-10. Against non-Charlotte schools, it is 15-2.

Come playoff time, their record against Charlotte teams is 12-8.

Then, that can be broken down more. Against Charlotte teams, in the playoffs over the last 10 years, their record at home against Charlotte teams is 11-5.

Their record on the road, during the playoffs against Charlotte teams is a dismal 1-3.

The draw for Richmond this year was HUGE! Based on past performance, the Raiders had to hope against hope the road to states went through Richmond County.

They know they will face someone from Charlotte in the playoffs. Their prayer every year is that they can play the Charlotte teams in Rockingham. They do not get it done in the playoffs in Charlotte.

Hey - The start of play off is almost here. Richmond, Butler and Mallard Creek will all have a rough time to make it to the championship game. Either one will have a good chance to win it all. We all want it to be our team, but I for one, will be pulling for the west in the final game no matter which team it happens to be. Last years teams is just that (we all have new players). Raider Fan here, then Western Fan if Raiders don't get to final game.

Wow, The road to the Championship goes through Richmond. RC begin playing in the west starting in 2002, so the guy who is posting those playoff numbers are making them up. How about posting the 33 playoff appearances and the 75-26 record(fact check at www.carolina preps.com)One thing is for sure when RC make it to the championship round they are 7-1 and 2-0 vs CLT teams. . Has any one checked out the combined winning percentages of the conf. of these two so called power houses.Butler and Mallard Creeks Conf. is in the 40's% and low 50's....Don't know just saying... ...for those who continue to post "If Meck. Schools had one team they would....fact is they don't have and never will have one school. "if frogs had wings they would fly"so deal with it one team at a time.Where is Indy? OMG they are HOME! LMAO!Thing is, Mallard Creek,Butler will be up and down in a year or two. RC is clearly year end and year out the number one Program in in the History of NC 4a

I keep reading that no team wants to come to the Rock and play Richmond Senior. It is the same size field as anywhere else, so there must be another reason. Wonder what is the reason?

With all due respect to RC, think this region is going to come down to Butler and Mallard Creek. Look forward to an exciting game down in Rockingham if both Butler and RC make it that far. Think either team is going to have a tough task with Mallard Creek the next week provided they proceed to the West Championship. Butler's D is probably the only one that can stop MC. Would love to see Providence with a huge upset.

A scotlan fan talking about all this raider magic. Richmond was flagged more than scotland last week so keep crying. When you are up by two td with two minutes left and you run the ball instead of kneeling it you deserve to lose. you wouldnt fumbel the ball if you kneel it. Face it, scotland doen nt know how to finish ball games in big time games! Stop your crying. Raider Magic is a thought you people in scotland must really believe that why you guys play games saying, when is that magic going to kick in and it messes with your heads! LOL funny stuff.

Has Knotts has put together his new Indy in Colo SC yet and begun a 7 straight title run plus 109 straight dubs yet?

Hilarious to watch the twin wantabes BHS & MCHS try to follow in the footstepts of the standard Knots & IHS set.

The Obs doesnt report out side its immediate sales area 50 mile circle & still does the gay 16 apparently thinking the internet hasnt been invented yet.

Wheres the statewide NC Top 40? SC Top 40?

Four teams still in running for west Mallard Creek, Richmond, Butler and Page. Butler and Richmond seem to have a rough game coming this week, But I feel either one will be able to send Mallard Creek home soon. In play off, anything can happen and this coming week should be interesting.

The only defense that can stop Mallard Creek's offensive unit is Butler.
