Fayetteville football coach suspended for running up score

Fayetteville Byrd football coach Russell Stone will not coach in tonight's regular-season finale against Union Pines.

The Fayetteville Observer reported in Thursday's editions that Stone was suspended for running up the score in last week's 75-7 win over Southern Lee. Byrd led 55-0 at halftime and threw passes in the second half.

Southern Lee coach Tom Paris was surprised at the news, which came from the office of Fayetteville Schools student activities director Leon Mack. Paris told the Fayetteville paper that he shook Stone's hand after the game and nothing was mentioned about the school.

Berry called 3 timeouts in the final two minutes and ran no huddle to go 60 yards and score on cuthbertson as time expired.....thats running it up now.

if it was such a big issue, why not stop the game at half time when it was obvious the other team wouldn't have scored enough times for the win? Yes, there is a point of concession that should have been done in "good sportsmanship" towards the losing team, but to me, as a parent, I would have felt worse for my child on the losing team if he would have had his team "throw" the second half so the score wasn't so high.

It's all about fairness and the liberals will not tolerate such a show of force and brutality because it might bruise someones ego. Weep.

This coach probably sat his starters. You can't tell the back ups to go in and not give their best. These guys are just itching for their chance to play. Can't help if they are still better. I'm sure the opposing teams kids would not want to throw in the white flag.

You make me laugh. Trust a Reich-winger to politicize something as simple and all-American as a high school football game.

You're an embarrassment to Conservatism.

Actually its the loony lefts sensitivity and tolerance, practiced and forwarded by academia that got the coach benched.

The same liberal mindset that just passed an ordinance in San Francisco where McDonalds cannot include a toy in Happy Meals anymore unless they conform to the City's nutritional guidelines.

As usual, the CO and its bloggers only report parts of a story. All this blogger stated was they threw passes in the second half and to the point of another poster, was the second and third string in the game?

It seems to me some of you getting your panties in a wad over "running up the score" as three fries short of a Happy Meal, just like the San Fran libs.

PC lib crowd won't be happy until they turn all competition into compromise, all fun into safety and a men into women.

Maybe the guy wanted to let his second and third string players have a go. Maybe at the end, he wanted to use the opportunity to have his team practice the no-huddle offense in preparation for the playoffs. I don't know. But if the other team's coach wasn't angry, it doesn't seem like a big deal.

Why am I not surprised that ring-wing nuts injected politics into this. For two years all they've done is cry about everything to the point of talking violent overthrow - now this. Your type is first to allow your teen son (on the losing side) to take your g.u.n to school to settle the score, proving your idiocy knows no bounds.

Sportsmanship in high school sports is now a political issue? Is it liberal and wimpy to shake hands after the game, or is the conservative position that they should fight to the death?

The coach probably shouldn't have been suspended, but the comments here aren't even about the game; instead, they reflect an unhealthy paranoia that everything must be about politics. For these writers, everything disagreeable must be rooted in liberalism; what a sad and irrational way to live. I feel sorry for people who live this way.

Objective of the game is to win. Wholehearted effort should be given to do so by every team that plays. The way you play to win is even more important. It's only a game. Play to win but obey the rules, respect authority, demonstrate humility, self control, integrity, uprightness, perseverance, determination and convey sportsmanship above all at all times. The game doesn't teach character it reveals it. Must have an active force (parent & coaches) to train character. Once winning is secured you can still continue to play hard without humiluating others....anybody who has coached knows how to do this in a proper way that is fair to his players and to the integrity of the game. This coach displayed arrogrance, haughtiness, merciless and selfish ambition on steroids. That's what character he instilled in his players. He could have taught them about humility, compassion, mercy and sportsmanship without ever compromising a wholehearted commitment to win the game!

55-0 at the half. So why didn't the OFFICIALS stop the game to discuss continuing with the 2 school's coaches?

Secondly, with that score, what is the winning coach offense supposed to do, round circles around themselves so they don't score or run the opposite way to score points for their opposition since tehy couldn't score for themselves?

Gosh sake give the winning coach back his job and fire the coach from the scoreless loser. This is coaches should be fired.

Seems the school board from the winning school are the only sore losers in this case.

It is a shame that some of you stupid a--s will inject politics into anything. Get a life!

Were you at the game to judge how well the coaching staff handled the situation? Have you ever coached a high-level team? I doubt it.

When you put in your 2nd and 3rd string players, they are playing their hearts out trying to earn playing time for the remainder of the year or for future years. How can you evaluate those players fairly if you tell them to not play their best?

Also, the coach is giving his 2nd and 3rd string players invaluable playing time to prepare for the playoffs against much better opponents than they faced in this particular game. If they play at 1/2 speed or 3/4 speed against a weak opponent, how are they going to step it up when necessary.

Believe me, I've coached many successful teams in two different sports, and it's darned if you do/darned if you don't in a mismatched game.

Having said all that, I didn't see this particular game, so I can't comment on how much sportsmanship the winning team displayed in the second half.

In a Game vs AL Brown vs Northwest Cabarrus, Nick Maddox's senior year. The wonders beat the Trojans 97-0!!!!! You never saw Coach Bruce Hardin getting suspended did you???

The answer was NO!!!!!!!!!

I refereed a soccer match several years ago between a very good Charlotte school and a very overmatched conference opponent from an outlying area.

The Charlotte school scored nine goals in the first 30 minutes when the coach pulled all of his starters - the Charlotte school's bench players scored three more goals in the next 10 minutes.

At half time, the Charlotte coach put in crazy rules about only designated players being able to shoot on goal, the number of passes they had to string together before they could shoot, how they had to take every ball back to the GK to restart a play, etc.

Well, needless to say, the Charlotte school had possession about 95% of the time, but only scored one more goal in the next 20 minutes.

Around that time, a parent from the home team had walked over to the Charlotte team's side and started SCREAMING at the Charlotte coach. She went off on a tirade on how they were embarrassing her school's players, just score and let them get the ball back, etc. School personnel had to drag her from the field kicking and screaming.

So you can't please everybody, even when you don't run up the score.

all political statements aside..those people need to be in another forum somewhere.
*about the football game*
in my opinion (which i understand doesnt matter), if there is not a rule in place that "stops" a game whenever the score reaches a certain point how do you expect these "kids" to suddenly go into a different mode of playing? either put a rule into place for everyone or let them play. i dont see how it could be any more humiliating to the losing team to keep playing as they were all trained to do as opposed to the winning team going out onto the field and suddenly act like they dont know what they are doing just to keep the score down, that is not fair to these kids that work their butt off all year just to play football or any sport. in my opinion it would also be humiliating to the losing team to stop the game. afterall we are not talking about "powder-puff sports" players, ie: kindergarten students, these are high school students that if they dont already know they need to know that there are winners and losers in every aspect of life. when you are losing, you dig harder to get better you dont expect the person ahead of you, to sit down and wait for you to catch up.
as for this particular game, if you were going to have people making fun of the losing team it would have happened either way it ended, whether the game was stopped, whether the winning team sit down and let the losing team score, or if it continued as it did.
again, this is just my opinion, i do not have a student at either of the schools inn question but i do have a son that played football at a charlotte high school a couple years ago and as a parent that was at every game if this situation had of happened i would have wanted the teams to play their game to the end as they were trained to do. does it really matter if the score is 21-0 or
75-7 ?? you have a winner and a loser, you have players that are old enough to handle the situation.
this football coach should be doing his job tonight and coaching his team.

No one can intelligently comment on this issue if they didn't see the game, know the players involved, the history of both teams, etc.

There is a freeze warning for tomorrow morning.

You right wing conspiracy theorists may now rant about how it's a liberal conspiracy and it will not get warm again until we get rid of that Muslim, Black President and get a good Evangelical Christian in the White House.

So, they only scored 22 points in the 2nd half. That ain't runnin' it up.

Sounds to me like the opposition needs to coach up some defense a little better.

In 1999 A.L.Brown (Kannapolis) beat Northwest Cabarrus 98-0 and nobody got in trouble. Funny how things change.
