Country Day, Belmont South Point join Sweet 16 football poll

After winning its first N.C. Independent Schools’ state championship Friday night, Charlotte Country Day jumps back into the Sweet 16 poll.

The Bucs beat Charlotte Latin 45-17 to win their first NCISAA championship since 2004. Country Day, which was ranked for much of the season, returns to the poll at No. 14.

The top 12 teams all won first-round public school playoff games, by an average of 32 points, and that includes narrow wins by No. 5 Rock Hill South Pointe (20-14 over Daniel), No. 9 Indian Trail Sun Valley (38-35 over Mooresville) and No. 10 Kannapolis Brown (21-18 over Hickory Ridge).

Two ranked teams lost and dropped out: No. 13 Clover was upset by former Independence coach Tom Knotts’ resurgent Dutch Fork (S.C.) team, which had won four games in two years prior; and No. 14 South Iredell’s unbeaten season was blown up by Marsvhille Forest Hills. Forest Hills, who beat South Iredell 31-30, has won six straight since a 3-3 start.

Those losses allowed Vance to move up two spots to No. 13. It also allowed reigning N.C. 3AA champ Belmont South Point to rejoin the poll. The Red Raiders have won seven straight, scoring more than 40 points in four of the wins

It's about time for Catholic to move up to #5. South Pointe has one loss and won a close playoff game. Catholic has a perfect record and destroyed their opponent last Friday.

Burns for state 3A title. Go, Bulldogs!

How come Albemarle isn't ranked? They are the defending 1A state champs. They have only lost one game to a very good 2AA Thomasville team. They had to forfeit 3 games they won by 50 some points each only because of a stupid JV rule. They are with out a doubt the best team in 1A ball in NC and SC for that matter. I guess if they win the state tittle again this year they still won't be ranked.

Catholic is a joke. they recruit players. Only public schools in a playoff where all other teams players are from a district.

Yep redraider I was recruited by CC when they told me to go to Our Lady of the Assumption back in kindergarten. They did the same for most of the line that consisted of the power house elementary schools of St. Gabes and All Saints. I have played football with most of the team since 6th Trinity football. STOP WITH THAT WEAK ARGUMENT.

If Catholic recruits why did we suck in the late 90's and early 2000's? Also, why did Sam Spence who's older brother played qb at Catholic go to Latin? Also, congrats Country day on beating your conference and winning a state championship! whew! 4 teams, that was tough!

Sam Spence went to Latin because he wants to throw the ball. CC doesn't throw the ball that much.

Catholic recruits?!?!?!?
CMS is going to get upset. Everyone knows that Butler is the only school Vicki allows to recruit.
Butler had, 2!, two!!!! players on the All-Conference ballot this week that attended Butler for 4 years. All the others were recruited by Newsome after thay had proven themselves at another school.

I am NOT a Catholic fan, but if you think they recruit you are crazy. Go watch them play, then you will see it is a bunch of well coached smart kids. While your at it, swing by Country Day and Latin, other dominant schools with VERY VERY few great athletes.

Didn't Catholic only beat Country Day because a ref called an absurd penalty at the end of the game and that allowed for a one in a hundred chance Hail Mary?

Who cares? Suck it up and deal with it. Schools recruit all across the country. This did not just start happening. So tell your coaches to recruit the kids, recruit their moms, and recruit their dads because they recruitin errbody out here.

I'm sick of people who think you have to have a bunch of great athletes or recruit to be good. Other than Butler and Mallard Creek, the best teams in town are Catholic and the privates (it isnt even close). People just cannot fathom that they can get beat so bad by what they view are spoiled kids. So they claim they are recruited. WAKE UP!!! They work hard and are BETTER coached than the rest. It is a fact and not hard to see if you just watch the games.

RedRaider, I'm assuming you are a South Point fan. Didn't your coach claim Latin recruited all their players after you got crushed by them?? Classy...

I'm telling you, I hate Latin as much as the next guy but they don't recruit. They are just good. Same with Catholic, and I hate them too. I'll pull against them all day with you but you can't just run around claiming they recruit their players (just look at them!).

You just look like an idiot to anyone who has actually gone to watch their games and knows their team. I bet both teams could show you all thier players' 1st grade pictures in the yearbook.

This can go back and forth all day long. Just like in CCDS won in 2009 because of a magical cut block that the line judge on the other side of the line called. Honestlyeven if it was an absurd penalty doesn't stop the fact that the next play was a TD that could have been defended.

Does anybody agree with me that 2AA Berry has a definite chance of winnig the whole tournament

The GREAT Butler and GREAT Mallard?

Their day of atonement is coming !!!

They are NO Independence High School.

Warning. Best safe bet is do and believe everything the opposite of what the crazed idiots at the Observer say. They will curse anything and everything with the stroke of a pen.
FACT!!!

I can see Berry going far. They have come A LONG WAY from the early days of the Queen City Conference. Im rooting for them in that bracket.

Didn't you get the memo? White kids can't be good at sports. Especially if they have money.

How did Wake Forest - Rolesville get excluded from the Sweet 16? The WF-R Cougars are 21-1 in Raleigh's tough Cap 7 conference. They have the best rushing defense and one of the top rushing offenses. This past Friday they shut out the only team that beat them regular season 21-0. They have no all-state players, only a great coach and hard-nosed players committed to going all the way. That's OK, wait 2 more weeks and you will be reading about the WF-R Cougars -- BIG TIME!

I just left a comment stating that Wake Forest - Rolesville was 21 - 1 for the year, and I meant to say they were 12 - 1 for the year.
