Butler to host Vance in regional championship on campus

Friday's N.C. 4AA Western Regional championship game between Butler and Vance will be held at Butler High, athletics director Courtney Paschal said.

Vance (11-3) upset nationally ranked and previously unbeaten Mallard Creek 10-7 Friday to reach its first regional final. Butler is in its second in a row and fourth overall.

The Bulldogs (14-0) have a 29-game win streak after winning 48-21 at Richmond Senior Friday and will look to become just the second Mecklenburg County 4A team in history to qualify for back-to-back state championships. Independence made eight in a row from 2000-07, winning the title seven times.

MC nat ranked? Didnt the Obs call them the best in Meck history? Is this not the 3rd yr in a row they choked on the Big One? MC always chokes. Not a big deal. Look for another Big Choke.

Vance by 7 and goes on to win 4AA state.

Yes, MC was nationally ranked. Won't see another choke this week. Butler will beat Vance handedly. Butler plays Vance every year in the non conference schedule and in the lat 12 or so years I think they have one once.

How many yrs did BHS choke? ONE title is not a dynasty. Not even close... How much chance was Vance given last week? yea rite

David & Goliath? part II?

Other than IHS, Charlotte Central won B2B titles sev times as did old Harding (Erwin Ave Elem) in the early 50s.

Tech they were 4A too as the biggest div at that time since "history" is being drudged up.
Be more accurate.

I don't think BHS has choked a lot of years. They lost to IHS a lot but it was not like people thought they were going to beat IHS.

Butler wins this game easily.

Butler has never choked. Since they became a team that was expected to be the best they have not lost. Last year was the first year everybody thought Butler had the best talent around. They haven't lost since then and don't see them losing for a long time given the fact that Ferguson looks to mature nicely and he has some great sophmores catching the ball for him and they are sure to get more athletes to transfer over to Butler, much in the same way athletes always found a way to attend Indy.

How is it that Butler can host Vance for the regional championship at home this year but last year Providence had to play host to Independence vs Butler for the regional championship. It had something to do with Independence nor Butler's stadium's did not meet the requirements. I guess Vicki Hamilton is afraid to say NO to Joel Ritchie or son in law Newsome. She has allowed two of the starting players to remain on the team knowing that they are not living in the BHS district so I guess anything goes as long as a team from Charlotte wins the championship. By the way I can't stand either school just wondering why rules can change from year to year.GO VANCE.

The conspiracy theories are hysterical. Last year the game was held at Providence for 3 reasons, Memorial was closed, Butler's stadium doesn't meet size requirements and Providence was the next best option to handle the expected huge crowd. Indy was never an option because they were the low seed; even though they meet the size requirement. The Vance/Butler game is being held at Butler instead of Providence because Butler got a waiver (and pays a fine) from the NCHSAA, and permission from both CMS and Vance to hold the game there if I'm not mistaken. There is no evidence or data that says that Butler can't handle the expected crowd Friday.

This just in. Butler repeats as state champions. The Observer buries the story inside, without a photo, as Langston Wertz hunts for other story angles as his beloved "Big I" chills on the couch at home. Go Dogs!
