4 in, 4 out of the Sweet 16 football poll

This is the final Sweet 16 poll until the champion is decided on Christmas Day, and four new teams are in.

Last week, four ranked teams suffered close playoff defeats and fell out: Lawndale Burns (No. 8 last week), Indian Trail Sun Valley (9), Belmont South Point (15) and Unionville Piedmont (16). That opened the door for the largest influx of new teams this season.

Welcome No. 12 Boiling Springs Crest (9-3), which has won five of its last six games; No. 13 Concord (9-4), which has advanced to the state quarterfinals after a tough 2-2 start; No. 15 Albemarle (9-4), which had to forfeit three games and lost only to 2A power Thomasville; and No. 16 Berry, back in the poll after beating Piedmont on the road and avenging an earlier loss.

-- Kannapolis Brown jumped from No. 10 to No. 8, Lenoir Hibriten rose from 12 to 9 and Vance, in the quarterfinals for the first time is up three spots to No. 10.

Where is Shelby?

I feel your pain Shelby, Salisbury gets no respect either.

Does Shelby deserve to be in the 16 with all those losses?

Where the crap is Tarboro? Defending 2A Champion and 13-0. Are you people crazy or what?

I love how he mentions that Albemarle lost to 2A power Thomasville, but fails to mention that is mighty A. L. Brown's only lost also.

Tarboro is not in Charlotte's coverage area. This is only Charlotte area teams.

As has been discussed time and time again, Shelby, Salisbury, Tarboro, etc.. would have trouble with the Charlotte private schools. You may want to lobby your local paper to make their own Sweet 16. Then you could exclude schools from Charlotte or rate them low, and feel good about it.

Shelby doesn't deserve a Sweet 16 ranking this year. Shelby may have trouble this year with Charlotte area schools. They are down. Year in and year out though, Shelby has been one of the top programs in the State of NC. They are one of the winningest programs in NC history with multiple championships etc. Shelby isn't scared to play anyone, anytime, anywhere. IIRC, Shelby is usually a fixture in the Sweet 16 and has been ranked in the top 5 many years. I've seen many Charlotte area schools play( I live in between Indy and Butler) and Shelby could hold their own with the majority.

In the 40-50 year history of CHS vs West Rowan the Spids lost once maybe twice but couldnt swear to it. Some were 40-50 pt blowouts. Word is out they improved. Good for them. Nuttin like a lil competition. It'll be a good one.

So explain to me how the number 2 ranked team in the 2A, the Lincolnton Wolves are undefeated and have been at number 11 for weeks now and get jumped over by teams with 1 and 2 losses just because they are 3A or above. I will take my chances with Lincolnton against some of these charlotte teams because they are the only ones that get respect.

Sorry, wasn't aware that this was a Charlotte Area only poll. But I will have to disagree and say that Tarboro could hang with any of those private schools that were mentioned. Most private schools are predominately white and wouldn't do well against public integrated schools.

Charlotte Catholic is a predominantly white private school that plays in the public school division and plays predominantly black schools in the MEGA7 and they are undefeated this year. They have also beaten the 2 predominantly white 4A schools and 2 predominantly white private schools. Color is only a factor when you make it one.

Anonymous said...

Sorry meant to say that Catholic has beaten the 3 predominantly white private schools this year.

Per my earlier post, I said MOST private schools would have problems with public schools. Charlotte Catholic is evidently an exception and am happy that they are dong well this year, and continue to wish them the best!

Hahahahahaha.....you clearly have not seen the Charlotte privates play. The best few have only dominated 4A publics for a decade. You are right they are inferior athletically but they more thna make up for it in smarts on the field. Don't make assumptions without watching these games. Country Day and Latin have had VERY VERY little problem handling every 4A team they play.

I've mentioned it before- you will not find the respect you are looking for from this poll. For Lincolnton, Shelby (peaking at the right time), and Salisbury, you have to go out on Friday and get any respect you believe you deserve.
This week I will be carefully watching Hibriten vs. Asheville (a beast of a team), and hoping that Concord can do something against W. Rowan. Also looking forward to that Butler-Richmond rematch as well.

Butler slippin as is Mallard Creek who will choke as bad as Carolina did against State.

Mallard cant run with the big hawgs. Butler choked up until last year but got the big head now.

Richmond County on top its game at the right time.

Can you say #8 coming up? Been there done that.

The big mystery is how West Rowan went from one of the worst in NC for decades to a reveral of fortunes so quick playing nobody. Must be some bigtime enlisting going on by fatboy but they still got that Achilles Heel somewhere.

Maybe the people from Shelby should check with the great teams from Crest who have had trouble with Charlotte Country Day. Crest is one of the great programs and fans in the area and they watched CD win 3 out of 4 games in that recent series. By the way call the AD of the Char-Meck School System and ask her why they won't play the local private schools and please post the answer. Charlotte Catholic did not "beat" CD and Latin, those teams lost on two questionable calls by the refs in the last minute of the game. From 2006-2009 Catholic was 1-7 vs CD and Latin..Enough said..

Crest couldnt carry Richmonds jockstrap.

How many times do we have to clarify that Charlotte Catholic plays in the weakest major sport athletic conference in ALL of CMS! That is not by acident. They would get killed in those other conferences.

NONE of the schools in that conference would be ranked in the top half of the other conferences. So because they are winning in that conference doesn't mean squat about their chances to beat other CMS schools.

Why don't they schedule Butler, Ardey Kell, Mallard Creek, Vance, etc? They will probably now take the opportunity to schedule Independence since Indy is not at the top of their game right now.

A city-wide post season tournament would settle this whole thing.

The good folks at the Observer told us at the beginning of the season that they would stop ignoring school size in their rankings of the sweet 16. Apparently they used to rank the teams based on how good they were at their level.

So this is how you get the larger schools jumping over an undefeated small school, because they have decided that the larger school team is playing better competition.

My blood just boils when people think their 1A or 2A team from accross the state would wipe the floor with CD and Latin. Nothing could be more ignorant and uninformed.

Look. Everyone knows this small minded dinky sweet 16 is yocal gay and stupid and polls need to be statewide with the top 10 in each div. Thats why others like ihigh or ncprep maxprep etc do it with entire states. Must be too much xtra for the local med.

Finally Albemarle gets in the sweet 16. I can't believe it, they are only the best team in 1A ball in both NC and SC.

Look at who Shelby has lost to this year. 4 of the 5 loses came to teams that have been ranked in this sweet 16. Lincolnton and Crest are still ranked, Burns has fallen from highly ranked in the poll to honorable mention, and Freedom (I believe) was part of this poll at some time this season. The only other loss was to Kings Mountain, a rivalry game and the oldest Rivalry in the state of NC. So yes I think they deserve to, especially since they are peaking at the right time. As someone mentioned, we would love to play everyone. I wish we would play the private schools. Don't compare CDs wins over Crest to if CD played Shelby. Completely different programs in all aspects.

If you look at MaxPreps state poll Shelby isn't even in the top 25. Meanwhile a team who is 14th in this poll is 11th in the state. I wouldn't put a whole lot of stock into the poll or this year's Shelby team.

We do, it's just no CMS school wants to play us. SM hates us MP and East backed out on us, I know many players from AK are scared to play us. Its kinda hard when you're the school people claim they can beat but don't want to try. It's okay we make up for it for the constant success in the playoffs. You can scream weak conference all you want but how come were playing well into December year in year out.

LOL.
Talk about embellishment or padding your resume? Fiction never had it do good. Try Reidsville High School or Richmond County. Could Shelby prevent IHS from 2000-2007 from scoring a 50-0 victory on them?
Shelby is mediocre OK but not even in the real running. 2nd tier status.
They might could run with the small house pets or mid size but not the Big Dawgs. Outa your league.

Independence? They are history. Finese. Over. Will Knotts ever return to create a new dynasty? Sort of.

Word is TK is already planning his return as head coach of the brand new UNCC 49ers football team and has already been selected by the Chancellor.

COULD 2010 CHARLOTTE CATHOLIC BE THE BEST HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM IN THE HISTORY OF MECKLENBURG COUNTY?

Anonymous said...

NO!
They are a bought team. Anyone could be good if they could recruit players. Private schools should play private schools.

Anonymous said...

Can you not think of a more convincing argument than the private schools recruit. Are they recruiting these kids at age 5? Or is it just that hard for you to wrap your mind around the fact that just maybe they are good teams. Just because somebody goes to public school doesn't make them a better athlete by default. How about the fact that half of the public schools fire their coaches every year, while Catholic, Country Day and Latin all have long time coaches who are probably 3 of the top 5 in the state. But yeah, your idea makes more sense. There is no way some kid whose parents pay $15,000 a year for them to go to high school can be better at anything than somebody who goes to school for free.

Private school teams could offer scholarships for tuition to obtain athletes to play sports. Private school teams could get athletes throughout NC and surrounding states instead of a certain high school district. Would this not be an advantage over public schools? But yes they are well coached and good teams no argument there.

Its simple. You pay to play. No freeloaders. Even public schools have run out of funds all over. Will there even be sports in CMS next year?

Anonymous said...

In God we trust. Everybody else pays cash.

And I'm sure some private schools do let kids come for free if they're good at football. See any of these new schools that already have world-beating basketball teams. Football isn't a sport where you can bring in 2 kids and dominate, at least not year after year. I don't think I'd include Catholic, CD or Latin on that list though.
