Butler QB Riley Ferguson offered by Clemson

Butler sophomore quarterback Riley Ferguson has been offered a scholarship by Clemson, Bulldogs coach Mike Newsome said.

Ferguson, 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, has helped the Bulldogs to a 7-0 record and a No. 1 ranking in the Observer's Sweet 16 poll and the Associated Press N.C. 4A state poll.

Newsome said Ferguson also has offers from LSU and Michigan.

Ferguson and the Bulldogs visit Ardrey Kell Friday.

he will look good holding the clipboard for 4 years

I hope that the Ferguson's give Clemson the right address to send to paperwork to. Since they have 2 addresses in 2 different home school areas. Nothing like renting your townhome to mom's boyfriend just to stay at Butler.

maybe he got offered from Newsome working the camp...oh, wait...no...he only worked Michigans camp while Frost attended the camp!!!!!!!!!!!maybe people should be reading Wolverine news!!isnt that illegal!!!!!but I guess daddy-in-law will take care of that one....seeing the principle got the wrong end of the stick on that one!!!!guess shed was the casualty of not being related..........

This kid hasnt done anything yet. Michigan - please he is not a running QB

Clemson - No way

LSU - Comical

Great job Newsome blowing more smoke. When are you leaving. You are becoming a joke in Charlotte

Clemson is a great school!!!!!!!!!best of luck........

Will you haters please get a life and stop crying on all of Butler's articles!!! Coach Newsome is doing good and is winning! Just give props to Riley Ferguson! Obviously the recruiters from LSU, Michigan, and Clemson see something they like! Your opinion does NOT matter! Get a recruiting job then you can decided who is offered! Fu*king haters!

Anonymous said...

Three offers and he's only halfway through his first starting season? A bit early don'tcha think?

If this kid was playing at a mediocre school we certainly wouldn't be hearing about him every other day.I understand he is young but he has along way to go and there are several QBs in the area who are bigger better stronger than Riley.

Anonymous said...

Would someone PLEASE do a "where are they now?" as it pertains to these young athletes getting a lot of hype and not working out at BIG schools. Didn't Butler have another QB that was D1 material at a young age, went to Illinois and now plays at Catawba??? Nothing against Catawba, but that's not Illinois!!!

Anonymous said...

Why do other teams players who gets an offer NOT get an article?? Many offers go out, but it seems that "certain" schools only get press about it.

Anonymous said...

That's amazing....Michigan is going to change there Offense for Riley Ferguson.....He was at the 7 on 7 at Catawba no offer.....Newsome should run for Congress....LOL

Anonymous said...

sounds like a bunch of angry independence fans... dont think that you earned those state titles the honest way either! you guys are just bitter whenever a school is that good at something. just be happy for the kids who just go out and play.

For only 19.99

You can get recruited by Big D-1 Schools without doing absolutely nothing on the Football Field. Cash only...Call Coach NEWSOME, Butler High School,Mathews,NC.

Anonymous said...

Clemson is not a great school. Maybe a great school to find guys wearing jean shorts, but not a great school in terms of academics.

Anonymous said...

I love all the hate Butler is getting. Obviously the kid can play or he wouldn't have offers. Newsome does a great job getting kids attention, if they want it. He talks to the players to see what THEY want to do, and he helps in every way possible. He is a good coach. I think it's time he gets some credit for what he has done, regardless what some people on here say and what stories they make up about eligibility or anything else.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, Newsome gets attention for what he wants to get attention for..Why is it always hush when Newsome headbutts a coach and it doesnt even get mentioned!!!!!!Nice, calling timeouts with a minute left in a game against EM and then headbutts the opposing coach!!!!wheres the news on that...ANother secret kept by Daddy in law....what a joke, every other coach would be making every paper and blog if they did that!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Bias is beginning to become the norm for charlotte observer and some blogs!!!!!!!news would be all over on crap like the Butler coach headbutting another coach...but seems daddy in law struck again and kept Ms.Hamilton quiet!!!!!!!!!GOOD JOB..........if it was West Charlotte or EM this would be everywhere!!!!!!!

In answer to an earlier request someone asked how are previous big football stars, the creme of the crop, doing in their college football carears. I went back to 2007,recent and by now these names should be household words, WRONG.I picked NC PREPS as my source. On the national front after Clausen, Mallett, and Brantly it was pretty much filled with unknown names to me.These were the list of the 100 can,t miss and most of them are unknowns just 3-4 years later. On the CLASS OF 07 QBs in NC Riddle was about the only name I recognized.Four to six years from now is along time and there is no surefire way to figure which kids will get better and move on.Sells lots of NC PREPS and this PREP AND THAT PREP but all it is is a bunch of BS.Look at the guys who are the stars today, juniors and seniors, many of who were unknowns four years ago.Its always been that way.

Point 1: This article is written by an adult! Point 2: The offers are being made by adults! Summary: Stop spreading venom and hate about a CHILD!! This kid goes out and plays hard everyday. He has not pumped himself up to the media at any level. Additionally, I wouldn't expect anyone OUTSIDE of Butler to give Newsome credit because they DO NOT know what goes on INSIDE Butler. He's a good coach. As for the head bunting, at what point did that happen??? I was at the game to the very end. Yea...didn't see that. There's no way that could have been covered up if it happened. Tell you what...the media is a fair weather friend anyway. They will hype you up one day and tear you down another. Just stop the hate!!!!

Anonymous said...

Come on stop pretending like you don't know. No one is spreading hate about the child.
He's not even in the top 10 qbs in CMS that's all...People are just fed up with certain schools getting ink just because. Ferguson is a D2 recruit at best. Stop whining because people, who have seen him play, are not impressed at all....I commend the coach for building up his confidence. Clemson,Mich, and LSU...now thats funny

Anonymous said...

What's funny is that Clemson,Mich, and LSU HAVE seen him play and STILL offered. Period...point blank!!! Breaking news....that's whose opinion matters! Butler is not the only school getting recognition-Mallard Creek, Ardrey Kell..there are definitely others. Prior to this year, there were other schools as well. Whining? Never! The truth is the truth! The adults argue and point fingers! The kids just play! End of story-I'm out!

Anonymous said...

I guess every qb in Charlotte is going D1

Anonymous said...

WEll if you were there, you would have seen it....I guess you were at the J.V. game then!!!!!!!!stop defending that bull!!!!!!your up like 60 something points at a J.V. game and you call a time out with 1 minute left.......yeah im sure you saw the headbutt.....not...everything else by daddy in law gets the treatment and cover

Anonymous said...

To say that I strongly dislike Mike Newsome and the cheating ways that seem to run rampant in Butler athletics, would be the understatement of the year. But, I have seen the Ferguson kid play and he has a tremendous amount of talent. I am no scout but he looks like a D-1 caliber prospect to me.
As for the headbutting incident, I am not sure that is correct. Newsome called timeout twice with 1 minute to play so he could get the ball back. He was up 41 to nothing at the time but he needed to score more for some reason. They scored on a 50 yard play with 5 seconds left but had it called back. I was working the scorboard and had a stripeed shirt sitting right next to me working the clock. As the play was unfolding he said, "wait a second and you are going to see a flag." Sure enough a flag was thrown. He explained to me that that was a "lack of class infraction". The officials call a fictitious penalty to keep classless coaches from doing what Newsome did. As the teams were shaking hands at midfield the EM coach asked Newsome why he would call the timeouts and run that play just to embarrass the EM kids. Mike's response was, "Get out of my face BOY before I knock you the F**k out!" He said this in front of my 10 year old daughter who is the EM water girl. She didn't tell me that there was a headbutt.

In summary I will say that it is my hope that Riley is TREMENDOUSLY successful but I also hope he doesn't grow up like his low life HS coach.

Anonymous said...

I wish nothing but the best for the QB....but Newsome is the classless piece of crap!!! you can go on any blog and they kiss butt!!these types of behavior are a joke!!!!You'd think winning a state title would make you a better man and behave better as a man!!!not....

Anonymous said...

Ferguson is a sophmore qb with huge potential. Tall with good arm and really understands the game. Colleges recruit based on potential.

His mother did not rent her townhome to her boyfriend.

Anonymous said...

I know both coaches (Newsome/Buck) involved. Have not been told of a headbutt. Words spoken long before this game. New coach wants to climb the ladder and old coach wants to stay on top of the ladder.

Based on what I was told the score in the varsity game (EM/Butler) could have been much worse.

Anonymous said...

SO now if you want to stay on top, you behave like a a**....grow up!!A HC that has a state title attached to him, should be a little more gracious with their words......its no excuse..especially when a newer coach asks a question and gets a barbaric response....its no class and just shows how low you really are!!!!!

OK - Not sure why I am even entering this mud hole of hate but. . .I was at the EM/Butler games both and I guess it depends which side you were on as far as what you THOUGHT happened. Mike Newsome is a good coach. He cares about his players. He goes the extra mile to see that ANY of them who want to play college ball have every chance to do so. Even if they don't go to D1 schools. I guess that whoever is current State Champions or who is winning the most games is always going to be under attack. After all it takes adults to give credit where credit is due for talent and hard work. Butler is the new Independence and Newsome is the new villian Tom Knotts. It's really too sad that grown adullts reduce themselves to slander and spread lies. I have read some real whoppers but the one about the boyfriend renting the townhome that is REAL misinformation! Watch the game for the love of sport. I can tell you Mallard Creek has an awesome QB, Audrey Kell and Harding have a couple of fabulous RB's. Bill Geiler is a great coach at Indy! Sun Valley & Charlotte Catholic have a couple of great teams. Now I LOVE my Butler Bulldogs but I don't go around trashing others. Grow Up!

I can only laugh, reading alot of the comments left about this young man. I haven't gone to see Butler play this year but it is evident coach Newsome is the successor of Coach Knotts. When your on top everybody hates you. Fortunately your words mean nothing because you aren't the one giving these kids scholarships. For those of you who feel this kid is overrated so what if he is. So what if he doesn't play a down in college. So what if he decides to transfer when he gets to his school of CHOICE. His education is still free. Clemson may not be Harvard or Chapel Hill but its still a good free and very well respected institution of higher learning. When schools start paying you to have an opinion about these student-athletes then your point will matter until then be a fan and thank God another young athlete from this city is going to school for free!

Anonymous said...

well seeing that none of the negative comments are in regard to the player but yet the football coach will lean me towards you people just excusing a coaches behavior....THe player is not the issue, best of luck to him in his future....lets not avoid the bottom line issue people, Newsome did not behave like a championship coach and thats the bottom line...you do not tell an opposing coach those things...its a joke!!!and lets not act like he is the only coach that helps his kids!!!!!theres a huge number of coaches in the carolinas that dedicate their lives to helping these young men get their chance to receive a scholarship!!!!shall we start passing out awards for him doing what he is there to do?

Anonymous said...

Butler is the New Indy, and Newsome is the new Knotts. Now thats as funny as it gets. MOVE AWAY FROM THE DRUGS!

My 6 yr old has huge potential. Can he get a look also. Where exactly is Butlers Dorms located?

Anonymous said...

Regarding the player that went to Illinois it was Jake Charest. Illinois planned to go to a pro style offense but the offensive coordinator left the next season for the head coaching job at New Mexico. Illinois realized they had a better chance of winning in the spread using a run oriented qb. That left Charest out. He is going to Catawba for free (100%) which is huge. Good luck to him and any other kid that wants to play football in college.

Anonymous said...

I also had the opportunity to meet the Charest kid along with his brother. Great young man. My son is a soph wide out with MC. He worked out with the Charest brothers, and Coach Shipp. There father did well. See BUTLER Kids working out with MC . No PROBLEM until you involve adults

Let me address some of these comments one at a time.

1)Riley's mom did rent her condo to her fiance'.

2)Coach Classless left his starters in until the last series in the Butler vs. EM varsity game. Blocked a punt when they were already up 60-0. So I don't know how much worse it could have been.

3)The ONLY good thing anyone ever says about Coach Classless is he helps his kids, WELL GIVE HIM A COOKIE!! His job is to help his kids. BUT, his problem is he has to help his by hurting others. That is a major character flaw.

I am truly disturbed every time I read comments on these blogs! And while I'm sure my message may not be heard I feel I must at least try! I have no child on any team and while I do know parents and children from several schools I do not have any favorites. However I sincerely hope that the ones posting these angry hatefilled comments are not parents! If so I hope that you are not breeding this hate in your children!! These boys go on the field every week and play a game for the love of the sport and you people manage to tear it all down with venomous words on a single post!! A coach that encourages his players to strive to go on to college and receive an education while playing a sport they love should be uplifted not torn down! The worst part of these blogs is how they so quickly spread lies, do you people have any compassion at all? Do you know the people involved???? No you don't!! I know for fact 100%, that not only is Rileys mother not renting anything to her fiancé but that she is also NOT engaged!! Where on earth do you people find the time to invent such lies!! I would be ashamed if I were you! How very sad that you show more attention to this article than you should!! How about spreading some encouragement, hope and compassion to a future generation instead of fueling the fire of hate, anger, bitterness and jealousy!!!

Let's all take pride in the fact that on any given Saturday, you can watch several young men from the Charlotte area playing college football. They come from Indy, Butler, Catholic, and many other wonderful football programs around town. Yes, the coaches say it's about the kids... that is what they are supposed to say. We know they really do it for themselves. Every Friday night is their own superbowl... let's just sit back and enjoy the show.

hunny, im crying a river for you actually...lets stop with the sob, guilt stories...this is not about the kids, its about behavior of coaches on the field!!!!!!!please, trust me, its your speech went right in one ear and out the other!!!!!!kids playing their hearts out is about the only thing Ill give ya....once again, its about the behavior of a coach who should be a leading example to the younger coaches, not a A**hole to them..

People this is NOT POP WARNER FOOTBALL. If you can't slow or stop a high school, college, or NFL team from scoring points then thats the teams players and coaches fault for lack of preparing for that game weather its the players effort or the coaches game plan. Im at coach and I've been of both sides of lopsided scores. When you get to the level of high school football and above you better have a good coach that prepares his team well and has a good game plan regardless of the talent level he has on the field. I've seen really good coaches with little talent beat teams with 6 or 7 D-1 ballplayers on the other team. In high school football you better prepare your team well regardless of their talent level or there's a chance you may get beat out 70-0. I look at it like this I'll beat you 100-0 if i can and you better beat me a 100-0 if you can. Im not going to complain at all. Most kids once they get to high school have been playing football since they were 7 yrs old. If they aren't ready to compete every play then its not the other teams fault. I say buckle up your chain strap and beat tail or get yours beat point blank....

Who do you Coach for? What arrogance. Running up the score is DUMB..What purpose does it serve? Please stop defending this guy. Oh because you're a coach is the stamp and seal that makes it ok. Please grow up. Coaching for Pop Warner does not count....LOL

To the anonymous poster who said my speech went in one ear and out the other....it is because of people like you that this hate is spread and where are u getting your incorrect info on the coaches???? I was there at the game and saw what happened...what game were u at????? You should educate yourself before you speak on something you know nothing about!

WOw...amazing...you have no child at a school, but yet you attended the JV football game for Butler!!!!Right......now you were there, well hun, hate to break it you, so were alot of people and its no coincidence that people all heard Newsome making that statment to the opposing coach.....Its interesting, you have no interest in any school or program, but now just happened to attend the JV game and saw what happened!!!!!good one!!!Hmm.......now thats funny!!!

Let me address some of these comments one at a time.

1)Riley's mom did rent her condo to her fiance'.
Really?? When did she get engaged???

2)Coach Classless left his starters in until the last series in the Butler vs. EM varsity game. Blocked a punt when they were already up 60-0. So I don't know how much worse it could have been.
Ha! That is funny. Just because some of those backups could start at East Meck (1 did last year), doesn't mean that they were starters. Butler is just loaded with talent.

3)The ONLY good thing anyone ever says about Coach Classless is he helps his kids, WELL GIVE HIM A COOKIE!! His job is to help his kids. BUT, his problem is he has to help his by hurting others. That is a major character flaw.

Coaches jobs should be to help the kids, but you see in many places where they use up the kids then spit them out when they are done. There have been intelligent players with D1 potential who have had to go the D2 route because the coaches didn't care enough. "Coach Classless" might have his faults, but he does help his players with a chance to realize their potential in the next level.

Anonymous said...

The crap started in th espring when Newsome only let players staying workout. This was a subtle form of recruiting because the kids were either forced to rent apartments or miss out on 5 months of work. The players who did then go to Indy and Rocky River were far behind. CMS and the principal at Butler should not have allowed this to happen. Ms. Hamilton should retire. She has lost control.

Judging from the jealous and spiteful comments in this blog, congrats to Coach Newsome for becoming the top program in Charlotte (the blatant slander present in these comments is historically reserved for only the best of the best).

And congrats to Riley Ferguson as well. The kid has a cannon for an arm, won TWO national championships in junior high, went undefeated in JV, and is still undefeated in varsity. Nice work, young man. Michigan, LSU, and Clemson all seem to agree.

I've watched Butler twice this year, first v Myers Park then v E. Meck last week. They had almost 50 pts at half both games, coulda def scored 100 in either game if they wanted. Butler is just a vastly superior team to anyone around right now, except perhaps N.Western in Rock Hill. Ferguson is very good...he got a an opp as a soph when Christian LeMay got frisky on the school grounds and was suspended. Recruits are based on talent and potential and he has the chance to be a good passing qb. Let's watch him become a great hs player for a great team, then see what he does in oollege. But don't slander a 15 y.o. kid. I am an outsider and became a Butler fan 5 yrs ago when I moved to Matthews from VA and watched them play as 2nd best to Indy. Everyone, including myself, loved to hate Indy, though they were successful, mostly thanks to coach Knotts (no way they'd be 2-5 going into this week if Knotts were there) and w/this program, who can blame parents for moving to an area w/a top program. Except that these Super Sophs played together for years out of Matthews. Support the kids from Charlotte.

I think people should get off this and get a life. Riley is my teamate and yea hes young and who knows how good he will be, but so was lemay when he was a sophmore. now hes at Georgia, and he sure isnt bad. So why dont you stupid parents who think you know what your talking about back off. Lets see one of you old shabs go out there and toss the ball around like riley. yea i didnt think so

The haters needa go suck balls and Riley Ferguson who is a great football player also a person i know at school will make a great QB...as for these no life people because they wanna be a QB like him needa go play football some football if ur in high school u could be scholarshiped if u are a player similar to him and people who r out of school(wanna be's or u jus dont kno him at all and needa stop critizing) to late for ya'll....

Independence won those championships because of their hard work and Knotts coaching ability. Also to you who said they didnt do it honestly, you probably have some tie to butler, a team that has criminals and sex offenders. Butler has egotystical players that have a misplace sense of self superiority. I have had encounters with many so I know what I am talking about. Since I went to Independence.
