Providence soccer upsets Sweet 16 No. 1 Myers Park

Providence pulled off the biggest upset of the soccer season so far Thursday night, beating Sweet 16 No. 1 Myers Park 1-0 at Myers Park's home field.

Conner Pickens scored the goal for the Panthers (7-5 overall, 3-1 Southwestern 4A). Stefen Knapp and Ward Gavin combined for the shutout.

Myers Park, ranked No. 3 in the N.C. 4A coaches poll, fell to 9-1, 2-1.

The Mustangs play a pair of unbeaten teams Monday and Tuesday and must rebound quickly. Monday, Myers Park plays rival Ardrey Kell at home. Ardrey Kell (6-0-1, 2-0-1) is No. 5 in the state coaches 4A poll.

South Meck (9-0-3, 3-0-1) is ranked No. 6 in the state poll.

Providence has won four of its last five games after a tough start. The Panthers only loss in that run was a 2-1 defeat against South Meck Sept. 16.

Providence has a very talented team, especially in defense. This was a great soccer match.

Providence man handled myers park, forcing them to resort to kickball. Providence is defiantly the most underrated out there. And their loss against south meck was a closer game then the score showed.

Myers Park had it's first bad night in a long time. Providence did indeed out play them.

Last night MP beat South Meck 4-0. South Meck had beaten Providence....

Without question Myers Park hasn the best three defenders in Davis CArter, Grant Carney (scored 2 last night) and Thomas Bradfor. Goalie Josh Brown is super when he has to stop the ball, however the defenders kep his work to a minimum. There is a very good chance the MP seniors will collect their second state championship ring this year.
