About 45 minutes before Independence and Mallard Creek were going to kick off the season with one of the state's top matchups, coaches from both teams got into a pretty heated verbal altercation near midfield.
It started with new Indy head coach Bill Geiler and an apparent Mallard Creek assistant getting into a shouting match about something near midfield. Both men pointed at each other and coaches from both teams came up, including Independence athletics director Kelly Lewis.
The man from Mallard Creek didn't have on the same attire as the other Mallard Creek coaches -- blue shirt, khaki shorts -- so I'm not sure if he was working with the team.
Just as things seemed to cool down, the coaches came back towards each other, with Mallard Creek coach Mike Palmieri and Geiler having words.
The players from both teams just kept warming up. The real battle begins soon.

Probably the Mallard Creek coach who is being investigated mouthing off. Sorry, if you do the crime you will do the time.
Geiler is a joke! Maybe the coach was asking if he always has accepted sloppy seconds.
MC coach probably called geiler FAT or that tommy knotthead wasn't there to protect him.
Guess all that supposed 'mouthing off' payed off. Look who won.
paid - not payed- the Patriots will be back - how many state championships for MC?????
Are you kidding above, MC is a 4th year program....how could they have that many championships....They came out, played a great game and won...and what do you Indy people do? Insult..How many games have you guys blown people out by 60 points and the opposing team took the loss and shook hands....Nice sportmanship you guys show, you cant even shake hands....MC worked their asses off and won the game....no diffence then Indy has done in the past...Grow up..
Refusing to shake hands was a complete lack of class - and this coming from an Indy fan. If a student athlete refuses to shake hands there is a punishment. Indy's coach should be fined. WRONG example to set.
I agree completely....Indy has put the beat down on teams over the years and never once saw a team refuse to shake hands...Every parent of a player at Indy should be outraged that these coaches would set this type of example...It was a great game, and MC won it....
a lost is a lost is football..we beat mallar creek twice last year so what!!weh havv 2 returnin starters on O nd 1 on D half of us didnt even play last year!!n if yall kneww the story it was a wholle lot of disrespectin on the field with a.b nd all besides iny gone get the win cause mallard ceek is goin to havv to forfiet the season..a.b recruitin and corey miller is suppose tobe at rockey river
Hey Anonymous (10:59): Nice grammar/spelling/mechanics! You MUST be an INDY student!
Must be the anger over MC coaches trying to recruit Indy players - and leaving voicemails to prove it...more to come I am sure on this. The Observer had a story up for about one hour on it yesterday and jerked it... bending to pressure no doubt - from who? They certainly didn't pull punches when Indy was being investigated to the tune of 100,000 large with no result.
the players and coaches didnt shake hands genius becuz they didnt want any altercation on the field its not a lack of class its called protecting ur players genius
CMS has already listened to the voicemails and texts from the assistant coach at Mallard creek to the Indy players. Since that coach was on the field, MC should have to forfeit this game and that coach should be fired.
If you knew what an MC assistant said to an Indy assistant, you would know why they did not shake hands. It was the least classy thing I have ever heard...but par for the course for that assistant.
Guess it's okay for Indy's "cocky" acting do-boy coach with the dumb-a combat boots to stand at mid-field prior to the game and yell at MC coaches and players, "won't be long now, you can't hide from the "a" whipping"!! Tommy would have never done that! Easy to blame the MC coaches
"Par for that assistant"...wow!! Guess you are an Indy homer!? I was standing on the track and heard/saw Geiler complain to his AD. Geiler walks to his bench and threw something on the field towards the MC players and coaches. The assistant did say some "choice" words to Geiler but only after Geiler threw the item at MC player and called
MC classless. If there was a problem with MC the head coaches should have gotten together and resolved it...
Both HC's are "Alpha Males" trying to establish territorial dominance.Usually the best football programs are led by alpha types. The problem comes from "hype coaches" ie coaches who:1.are loud to seem important 2.not paid from CMS funds 3.not coordinators 4.JV coaches 5.handle discipline after practice 6. will do anything the head coach ask because it makes them both feel good! The hype coach is a buffer for the head coach.
