Concord Cannon to kick off varsity football this year

On Aug. 14, Concord Cannon will debut its first varsity football team.

The Cougars will kick off the 2010 season against Hickory Grove at the Hickory Grove Jamboree at 7 p.m.

In preparation for the new football team, the school has added new goalposts, a new scoreboard and bleachers to its field. Cannon will host its first game Aug. 27 against Northside Christian.

“The members of this first team are embarking on a unique journey and will make history every single day on the practice and game fields,” said head coach Donnie Hayes.

Hayes joined Cannon in 2008, starting a middle school team. He came to the school from Viera (Fla) High, where he started a new team and coached for two years. He has more than 12 years of coaching experience at the high school and middle school levels, as well as experience as a college and semi-professional football player.
