Butler's Cierra Burdick makes USA World team for 2nd straight season

Butler High All-American Cierra Burdick will play for her country for the second straight season.

Burdick was the only Carolinas player picked for the USA Basketball U17 World Championship team that will play in the FIBA U17 World Championships July 16-25 in France.

Burdick won a gold medal with the USA U16 team last season.

A 6-2 rising senior committed to Tennessee, Burdick averaged 19 points and 11 rebounds last season, leading Butler to its first N.C. 4A state championship. She was named co-N.C. Associated Press player of the year with Gastonia Forestview’s Shannon Smith and the Observer’s regional player of the year. Burdick was also named a Parade All-American.

She’ll remain in Colorado, training with the US team, through June 15. The team will train in Washington July 5-7 and later play several practice games in Spain before going to Rodez, France, for its first tournament game July 16 against France.

The team is coached by Wingate coach Barbara Nelson.
