Butler No. 2 in national preseason football poll

Butler High’s football team is ranked No. 2 in MaxPreps national preseason rankings.

“I guess it’s really neat to be thought of in those high regards,” Bulldogs coach Mike Newsome said, “but we’ve got some big shoes to fill to replace our whole offensive line. I thought we’d have a big target on our back and things like this just make that target bigger.”

The Bulldogs were 15-0 last season and won the N.C. 4AA state championship. Butler was ranked in most end-of-season national polls and return All-American quarterback Christian LeMay, who has committed to Georgia. LeMay was MaxPreps player of the year in the junior class after throwing for more than 3,000 yards and 44 touchdowns in 2009.

Also returning are all-conference rising senior tailback Jawuan Edwards, rising senior linebacker Kris Frost, a first-team selection on the All-Observer team and rising sophomore linebacker Peter Kalambayi, a 6-3, 225-pound linebacker who had a great postseason run in 2009.

LeMay is losing two 1,000-yard receivers in Nate Charest and Anthony Short, but will throw to his brother, Uriah, a 6-1, 185-pound rising sophomore who already has offers from Clemson and Auburn.

Also expected to start will be 6-2, 220-pound East Meck transfer Osvaldo Sombo, who was an all-conference player last season.

"He's played defensive end to this point," Newsome said. "We're going to look at him at outside linebacker opposite Frost. He's a Frost-type player. He's definitely a difference-maker on the defensive side of the ball."

The biggest concern at Butler will be replacing the entire offensive line. Newsome thinks his team will be able to do it successfully.

"We won't be as big as last year but there are some really hard-nosed, hard-working young men who can step in and get the job done," Newsome said. "They've been chomping at the bit for the chance. It's basically the whole jayvee offensive line that will be coming up and we've got a couple varsity backups ready, too. I think they'll be really solid."

MaxPreps preseason top 12: 1. Trinity (TX); 2. Butler; 3. Abilene (TX); 4. S. Panola (MS); 5. Grant (CA); 6. W. Monroe (LA); 7. Westlake (CA); 8. Dwyer (FL); 9. Bingham (UT); 10. Lake Travis (TX); 11. Plant (FL); 12. Glenville (OH)
Note: Rock Hill Northwestern, which returns star quarterback Justin Worley, is No. 18.

-- Newsome said he's not sure how many players Butler is losing to redistricting. The new Rocky River High will open in the fall and that forced Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to redraw assignment lines.

"We're losing a handful of guys," Newsome said, "and I've made it a point to not know. I don’t want anyone to accuse me of recruiting, even though it's my own guys or guys who used to play for me. We've got some we're losing. But I want to coach the kids that are here next year."

-- Newsome said repeating as state champs will be tough, especially with his team's difficult schedule. Butler will play state powers Mount Tabor, Lenoir Hibriten and Richmond Senior before they begin play in arguably the state's toughest conference, the Southwestern 4A.

"It's tough to repeat," Newsome said. "Last year, all the pieces came together and it happened to work for us. If we're fortunate enough to do that, and I think we'll have a chance to taht, it'll be great. But with our schedule I don't know. It's tough to go through a great schedule."

Newsome said West Charlotte will no longer be on Butler's schedule and the Bulldogs replaced West Charlotte with 3A state championship contender Lenoir Hibriten.

Butler's Schedule: A20, at Mt Tabor; A27, open; S3, at Vance; S10, Richmond Sr.; S17, at Lenoir Hibriten; S24, at Myers Park; O1, Rocky River; O8, East Meck; O15, at Ardrey Kell; O22, Providence; O29, at South Meck; N5, Independence (at Memorial Stadium)

Don't want to be considered recruiting...LMAO. You already are my friend and you know it. You will go down as well, might take some time though. It looked like a good cover up in the paper though, so when you go down, you can say I told ya so. Butler SUCKS!

What does LMAO mean?

It will be tough for them to run the table again!

Second best team in the nation is not even realistic.

Newsome is not recruiting. He is telling them which apartments in the Butler district to go to for the fake rental agreement. He knows who's leaving and he's doing everything he can to cover it up so they can stay. Why do you think Gorman put Newsome's father in law Joel Ritchie in charge of the East Learning Center. It's call to help with the cover up.

The cover-up goes much deeper. Newsome's father and family are all part of an international group that actually run several multinational corporations. The "Family," as they are called also run several governments from the shadows-especially in South America. Newsome's father was a personal friend of Fidel Castro. If you check out the grassy knoll in Dallas on a fateful day in November, 1963, you will see Newsome's brother, Raul. Lastly, Newsome has an Uncle who is on the Council of Cardinals in Rome. The truth is out there, but many are afraid to investigate too deeply.

how about all of you get a life and let him coach HIGHSCHOOL football. you dont know what is going on with him or the team.

Sounds like betty white is the only realistic poster on here, and the rest are jealous indy pats fans.Knotts is gone, the green and gold suck, have a new qb to replace the 4 year nobody, and newsome will run char-meck football for years to come.

This is hilarious. The Lemays moved to Mint Hill to play for Butler two years ago. Guess what? Mint Hill is now Indy's terrain. So the Lemays are moving again! Nice....Newsome is claiming he doesn't know which players are assigned where. That is funny....He issued equipment to players who were assigned to Indy but said they would be moving into nearby apartments. The ones who didn't did not get stuff for spring ball. That makes him deceptive. If anyone denies the recruiting just check the apartments next to Butler. They are filled wall to wall with Butler players who have homes in Mint Hill. If anyone calls me out, I'll list names.

thats funny cause newsome was not even married to Ritchies daughter when he got a promotion. good try though. butler is gonna run it again, no need for indy pats fans to be jealous.

Dear Mr. LMAO:

Relax. It's just kids playing football. Enjoy it. Stop being so bitter.

Butler's season should have an asterisk next to it. Look at four of the players mentioned. Christian Lemay moved from Porter Ridge to play for Butler....His brother is now supposedley moving to play with him. East Meck kid transfers. Rumors of sweet apartment deals for athletes, including the qb from last year's jv team. For Newsome to say after spring drills he doesn't know who he is losing makes me think he thinks we are all stupid. Get on it CMS. He makes the BB coach look clean.

G-rated version of LMAO = Laugh My Anterior euphemism Off. Friday Night Lights level stuff going on right here in NC? say it ain't sooooo

All you people need to relax. Whether he recruits or not, there is nothing any of you can do about it. The same thing goes on in every, let me repeat, EVERY high school in CMS. But everyone wants to get butthurt when their school doesn't win. If it wasn't Butler that won last year, all you people would be crying about the school that did. Let it go. Get over it. Move on.

Sounds like a few folks did not get their pads issued to them by Coach Newsome. Congratulations to Butler. Watch out...the East Meck Action Committee is coming soon!

Betty White, that is the most rediculous thing I have EVER heard.

Is it me or I'm just fishing, why does prep insider have articles of Butler all the D---- time! Are there any more cms high schools in Charlotte. Guess Butler is the only one. Here's something prep insiders can chew on; write something about other high schools in cms and just maybe you have some positive feed back.

To be the best, you have to beat the best, Butler has done that, now they're in the spotlight. The bitterness and jealousy is rampant on here. Not sure why Butler should have an asterick next to its seasons for students transferring (every school has them) and rumors by bitter fans of other schools. Its time to name names AND provide evidence of rules violations, otherwise, shut up and go back into your hole.

To Andrew take a look at the CMS website and go to the Athletics Eligibility Violations page and see for yourself which schools have had violations. Butler had 2 one for football and one for swimming The swimmer did show up at their assigned school but the football player used one of granddaddy's addresses to stay at Butler and has yet to report to his assigned school. South Meck had a few West Charlotte had one and Providence had some. So check the facts before you speak

Anonymous 8:15pm Know your facts before you speak. Ritchie was moved to the East Learning Center this winter when Nancy retired. Newsome married Ritchie's daughter last year. So yes Newsome was the coach and the new lines had been drawn when Ritchie was transfered to the East Learning Center. So yes it's called "help with the cover up" I see nothing I hear nothing I know nothing son in law

To Anonymous 9:31am
You're a moron. I was referring to the rant that there are sweet apt deals, meaning there are a bunch of butler athletes staying at the apartments next to Butler. Pointing out that there are 2 violations, proves what? That the system works and that they were caught? Still ZERO evidence provided of any recruiting on this football team. So maybe you should think a little more before you speak... or maybe stop posting as an anonymous user.

For all yall butler haters on here, get out. First off you don't know what you're talking about, newsome doesn't recruit anybody and his father in law Mr. Richie was already head of the eastern district before he go married. And butler earned the right to be #2 in the nation. I was apart of that team last year, look at what we did and our record. We worked our butts off and it paid off. And with the same coaches out their again I know they're working twice as hard. So don't get on here talking trash about butler, because if you're not out there than you don't know the hard work put in that program so yall can just shut ya mouth. And lemay I'm pull for you to return, so you can show them what butler's all about and that you are the best in the nation!
