Baseball player in Virginia urinates on field during national anthem to win $20 bet

A high school baseball player, to win a $20 bet, urinated on the field during national anthem before a game in Big Stone Gap, Va. The player, who is named in this story from the Bristol Herald-Courier, is also the school's star quarterback and the son of a coach. With no history of such behavior, the act was punished internally, and officials called the act a "stupid mistake."

An excerpt from the story:

“I don’t feel any animosity toward him, and in no way would I want to hurt this kid,” said Joe Rasnick, commander of Big Stone Gap’s Veterans of Foreign Wars. “It’s what he did that I despise."

Rasnick was quick to come up with what he believed would be proper punishment for urinating on the field during the National Anthem. He suggested a public apology, then an assignment to research patriotism, which should be presented to the school.

“When they play the Star Spangled Banner, a lot of folks keep on talking, drinking their sodas and eating their popcorn. A mighty hush doesn’t come over the crowd anymore,” he said. “This is just one incident where a youngster did a stupid thing, and he’s probably very sorry. I bet that someday, when he matures, he’ll realize that he did a very hurtful and distasteful thing.”

What do you think? What's the appropriate punishment?

There's also this column, from the paper's editor, on why the Herald Courier chose to publish the player's name.

Proper punsihment - IED patrol in Iraq for 2 years ought to do it.

This kid should be made to apologize to anyone who's lost a loved one in service to this country.

Since I have several (Relatives) who have served in the military, I would suggest that the best way to punish the younger generation for such abuse, as soon as they finish school and are of age, send them the Iraq and I guarantee you after they serve one term they will come home (hopefully) and have respect for what this Country stands for.

Someone needs to piss on him.

I read the article and the Editor's defense and thought both were excellent. Why not expose the kid who exposed himself? There's no question the District is going to let it slide, he'll be a hero to his friends, and the message sent to the other kids is deplorable.

If you can burn a flag, why not pee on it as well? This is the slippery slope that liberals were warned about 50 years ago (in the 'glorious' 60's), but, of course, they knew better. So what if we have generations now that don't respect the rights that they were bequeathed? Well, in my view, once you don't respect something, you're not far from giving it up. And so now we see the Liberals - not the conservatives - instituting unpopular laws that increase government and reduce personal freedom. When 50% of my income goes to taxes, how do I have freedom? Read your Russian history people - it was the Liberals who brought totalitarian rule to that country - and then bankrupted it.

Charles, Great post, I agree 100% with you and others who posted before your. Liberals have caused great harm to this country trying to be the United States of Europe and hating America. I do not understand why they can't leave America and move to Europe where they already have socialism and everything else that's bankrupting them. We can not go the direction they want us to go and must fight to take this country out of their hand permanently.

He's young and did a very stupid thing. The trauma he's feeling from being named is the recognition of what this cost him in reputation, and being known for this action rather than other positive things he's done.

He's young, and he'll have the opportunity to make other stupid decisions like this. Hopefully he won't make the same choice.

He's young, and we can embrace him and help him understand what this country means for everyone. I hope he'll reach out to Mr. Rasnich and turn this action into a positive learning experience.

This may be the best thing that ever happened to him.

This young man should also be required to visit Walter Reed Hospital and work as an aid to help the MANY service men and women that are unable to care for themselves.

Anonymous said...

I think your community must have issues, they talk and eat through the National Anthem? That is terrible. A hush does fall over our crowd, and hats are removed. Please tell me the young man was not allowed to play in the game!!!

Anonymous said...

Community service work like volunteering in a VFW hospital would be appropriate.

Anonymous said...

If there are laws against public urination, just enforce those and be over with it.

Anonymous said...

I think he should have to work for free this summer at a VA hospital. By the end of the summer he would have more respect for the national anthem and the veterans.

Anonymous said...

I agree... 100 hours of community service in a VA rehabilitation hospital. Maybe that would open this young fool's eyes.

Anonymous said...

He should be kicked off the team and the coach fired for not doing anything about it.

Anonymous said...

The bigger question is, "What would this kid do for $50?"

Anonymous said...

What he did was completly wrong, you do not disrespect national anthem or burn flag.
This kid need to punished to the full extend of the commen sense law.

Everyone who is in Iraq or Afghanistan volunteered for it! For love of country, patriotic duty or self esteem/pride. I do not want to send someone who will likely endanger his fellow soldiers by selfish acts such as this! Parents are to blame, our kids are watching! Like father like Son! Shameful.

Anonymous said...

Regardless as to whether the national anthem was playing or not, why wasn't he kicked off the team for, at the very least, not maintaining the proper decorum while representing his high school? There were plenty of "sportsmanship and citizenship" rules like that for participating in school sports when I went to high school(admittedly 2 decades ago) and I don't think those rules have changed that much since.
In addition, there are probably city ordinances against public urination - just because he was involved in a sporting event doesn't make him less culpable. Just enforce the rules already in place - the fact that he's the son of a coach and still on the team makes me wonder.

Sicko! He will probably end up in congress with the rest of the loonies!

Timothy Whitson said...

Nobody can be forced to show respect for anyone, or anything. You either respect a person, idea, or flag or you don't. His punishment will be exactly what his fellow citizens of the US decide it should be. They'll either remember it, or "let it slide" as a youthful indiscretion. He can't undo it. If there are enough people in his life who are rightfully horrified then it will be reflected in their treatment and respect (or lack thereof) for him in the future. If those who surround him don't call him on it, then that says a lot about the state of patriotism in 2010. Right after WWII, he'd have never gotten a decent job, been admitted to college, been allowed to play ball, and would have probably had to leave the community. Don't judge him, judge us.

Anonymous said...

Only one word....PUNK!

Anonymous said...

That's pretty disgusting. And isn't public urination a crime...a misdemeanor?

He should've been made to clean up his mess...with his tongue. Then maybe given a good old fashioned spanking with a two-inch wide belt.

Anonymous said...

If this jerk will pee during the National Anthem for twenty bucks, with his lack of moral clarity God only knows what he would do for hundred bucks. What an idiot, Obama must love him!

Anonymous said...

Kicked off the team and arrested.

The problem with this country is the people that posted on here linking Iraq to our freedom. Haven't you people smartened up to the FACTS that Iraq had nothing to do with protecting our freedom and everything to do with corporate interests? For Christ' sake, the prez and VP were former energy exec and heavily invested in military contractors! For the millionth time, Saddam did not attack us on 9/11! McFly... anyone home? And as for bankrupting our country, its not the libs that are behuind $700 Billion a year in military spending, that does absolutely nothing to make us safer by the way. And it isn't the libs that passed the gestapo law to produce your papers in Arizona. Place the blame where it belongs, with the conservative sheep. Wake up America!

Nail his little "tallywacker" to a table with a roofing nail, and give him a knife in the middle of Afghanistan with a bunch of Afghan rebels screaming death to the "Infidel". We will see how patriotic he really is.

Little pinhead squirt. Somebody needs to give him his comeuppance. An "old school" USMC Gunny would do just fine.

emily said...

who urinates in public besides a drunk wino?...he should be kicked off the team for a season and be assigned latrine duty throughout the city.

J said...

Dan - you have read the Democratic Party talking points very well. You would do very well to take care of who you call sheep. The "Bush/Cheney started the Iraq war for their corporate/oil buddies" line is as tired as it is baseless. Iraq DID have WMD - what do you think all those trucks that mysteriously disappeared into Turkey were carrying, Twinkies?

We declared victory far too early, and we badly underestimated our opponent. And it's not like we had superior work going on in the intelligence agencies. But the reason we went in was sound, and the world is a much better place without Saddam in it. I agree with all those who want the war to end soon.

Now, back to the punk kid. Since this is a small community, and the kid is the school QB and son of a coach, he likely has never worked for anything in his life. He has probably been taught (by the actions of others) that his athletic ability and who his daddy is make him better than everyone else. The fact that he would even consider this act means he thinks he can do what he wants, when he wants and how he wants.

I am sick of people dismissing stuff like this with the "he's young" excuse. There is no excuse. I like the idea of sending him to Walter Reed for the summer to work as an intern. That should give him plenty of reason to respect the flag and the national anthem, as well as teach him that all the stuff he thinks he's entitled to came at a very high cost.

MW said...

How about just writing him a ticket indescent exposure and public urination. Then he should be kicked off the team and lose whatever scholarships he has recieved for his LACK OF CHARACTER. But as we all know, he will get a stern look from coach and a slap on the hand from ma and pa. I couldn't imagine what my father/mother would have done to me if I was moronic enough to attempt such a thing!

At the next local ball game in his local town he will hold the American flag and recite the words to the National Anthem. Then he will read a list of the soldiers names in his local town that died in WW1 WW2 Korea Vietnam IRAQ 1 IRAQ 2 and Afaganistan and any local that died SEPT 11 2001.........

Well since we have administrators and teachers, all within in the last week, staking out positions the flag is "offensive", there is no wonder kids grow up confused. About ten years ago libs started down this path on the Confederate flag. Ole Miss can't play Dixie anymore. It was only a matter of time till we reached a day where the flag has become offensive and our national anthem is offensive. People sat by and did nothing while all the political correctness ran wild. Pissing during the anthem, this is not the end, it is only the beginning. It is time we took back the country. We can start with some of these damn schools run by liberals using our tax money.

Hey its not the Kids fault its Peer Pressure...Punish the entire team...

All the righteous indignation over this is hysterical. BFD in my opinion. If you need to get all revved up over something this agitated, you probably have deeper issues. And, before all you NRA people get all juiced up with me, I have family in the Armed Forces and they don't care one bit either about a teen in VA peeing during the Nat'l Anthem.

What does this have to do with being liberal? What if he is a Republican?

Anonymous said...

J, where is YOUR PROOF on the WMDs? You conveniently skip over the part about Saddam not being involved in 9/11. I say a liar is a liar regardless of political affiliation or ideology. It does not matter who is in control, both Dems and Republicans LIE LIKE SCUM DOGS. If you were not bothered by the Bush/Cheney antics, then you've no right to whine about Obama. What we need is a viable 3rd party in this country. One where patriots, unencumbered by the pockets of big business can go about the people's wishes.

Anonymous said...

To urinate in public, wouldn't you have to expose yourself in public??? sounds like he's getting off easy.

Anonymous said...

He can piss on me :)

Haha! Thanks J! Thank you so much for proving my point!

Don't care what his politics is. Look there were 2 people involved in this action. Take the $20.00 and the person who dared him along with parents to the next local VFW meeting or local hang out where vets gather and have them explain why they were stupid enough to place the dare and then to follow through with it. I don't think these 2 will ever do such things again.

The stupid mistake was the stupider media printing meaningless trash like this. We dont need to know everything.
This is like the Oprah show on defecation. What a sicko.
He should have been horse whipped on the spot and perm banned from the field.
Urinator and media = dumb and dumber.

I liked the way one Texas community reacted to a court ruling which protected flag burning... by passing a law that made it only a misdemeanor to beat up someone who burned a flag!

I think this kid needs to be sentenced to 40 hours of community service at a VA facility. Let him spend it caring for wounded veterans.

I'll bet he was a negro.

Yeah, white kids aren't good enough at sports to be captain.

I believe when he researches patriotism he'll find out he has every right to urinate during the national anthem.
After all, this IS still America isn't it?
Everyone has the right to be as nasty as their upbringing.

The act and the defenders responses are appalling on several levels.

“When they play the Star Spangled Banner, a lot of folks keep on talking, drinking their sodas and eating their popcorn”.

Where? While every sole in attendance doesn't put their hand over their heart, I swear I haven't seen the blatant disregard for the anthem as suggested occurs in that community.

And what was this next comment about?

“We want to make this very clear, this kid did nothing that he considered unpatriotic,”

I'm sorry, must be a bunch of idiots in a community that doesn't find pissing during the anthem in front of everyone not offensive. A sophmore in high school is WAY old enough to find another time to take such a dare.

Apparently the biggest issue concerning this is whether the local paper was wrong to publish his name. Give me a break. Why did the coach not yank him from the lineup? Why did the school not suspend him? Is that community so starved for some sports success to not think it necessary to dish out some punishment to one of its stars? Kids need to learn that there are concequences for all actions. Good things happen to those who do good. Bad things happen to those who do something stupid when they should know better. Hopefully, the kid gets what he deserves when the best colleges pass on his athletic skills due to his poor choices. There are kids much more deserving.

12:38 PM anon wins. We have laws in this country and a constitution to protect people here from the punishments being suggested. As so often is the case our founding fathers had a lot more sensibility and understanding of justice than people posting in these comments.

And yes, the kid committed a deplorable act.

There is nothing patriotic about a football game forcibly funded by the taxpayers. Drop the national anthem from sporting events.

Anonymous said...

Black kid or white kid? What does it matter? The kid's a lowlife punk. But for what it's worth: Let's see, baseball team, high school qb in the hills of VA. I'm guessing a redneck hillbilly. If it's like NC, there aren't too many "brothers" in the mountains.

Anonymous said...

...and as for the the apologist for the kid saying "people laugh, talk, eat, etc" during the Anthem. Sounds like the whole damn town is a bunch of hillbillies.

This young man has made a mistake and should be punished, but not necessarily in a conventional sense.
I do not think that he should be named; but I do believe that he should be shamed for what he has done. May I recommend a tour of Walter Reed Army Hospital, or some other facility, where he can visit and interact with our wounded service men and women. After meeting brave people that have been maimed in the service of our country, perhaps he will realize the seriousness of what he has done; and be a better man for it.

He's a sports star; he should remain above the law. Maybe he will be the next deified, spoiled athlete to be accused of raping a stripper or beating his girlfriend or hiring a 16 year old prostitute.
