Vance's Marquis Rankin commits to Va. Tech

Vance High junior guard Marquis Rankin, one of the nation's best players, has committed to Virginia Tech.

Rankin will join Concord Cannon senior Jarell Eddie, a 6-foot-7 forward who will play for the Hokies next season.

Rankin's father, Lamar, said his son chose the Hokies over Wake Forest, Clemson and South Carolina.

"It was the best opportunity for him to play right away," Lamar Rankin said. "Plus, they've been recruiting Marquis since he was a sophomore and there was a really good relationship there with the coaches."

Rankin made an all-conference team for the third straight season after averaging 13.6 points, seven assists and 4.4 rebounds this season. National recruiting website scout.com ranks Rankin the No. 23 overall player in the class of 2011.

Great get for Greenberg and the Hokies! Quick, can score, can pass, and can defend. He and Eddie will make a nice pair in the backcourt in 2011-12.

I'm a big-time VT basketball fan as well as an alumnus and I am STOKED about this commitment. We really needed a pure point guard in the class of 2011, and Seth Greenberg has hit a home run with Marques Rankin. He's the second "Top 25"-level player that's committed to VT for the 2011 class (power forward CJ Barksdale being the other) and several other top recruits are seriously considering VT as well. My Hokies may well be on their way to a Top 10 recruiting class! :-)

The lead part of this in the print story was about you knew who. It was something like, "Central Piedmont offers Chritian Lemay a scholarship." Or was it something else?

Top notch player and one helluva a scholar. Wish he would've chose Clemson, but VT is better academically. All the best to you Mr. Rankin. You have earned it.
