Hopewell's DeMon Brooks commits to Davidson

Hopewell High basketball player DeMon Brooks, the I-MECK 4A player of the year, has committed to Davidson and will sign next week.

Brooks is a 6-foot-8 center who averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds last season. In college, he’ll play with his high school teammate, Hopewell 6-6 senior guard Jordan Downing.

Brooks originally signed with Howard, but was granted a release after Howard fired men’s basketball coach Gil Jackson last month. Jackson was 37-118 in five years, including 7-25 last season.

Hopewell coach Eric Davis said Brooks narrowed his choices to Davidson, Appalachian State and Elon.

“He really wanted to stay closer to home and Davidson had a really good freshman class last year and a really good one this year,” Davis said, “and (Brooks) is really excited about playing for (Davidson) coach (Bob) McKillop, and to play basically in your back yard is exciting to him, too.”
