Vernon Hunter is new AD at West Charlotte

Vernon Hunter is the new West Charlotte athletics director.

Hunter, 29, is from Woodruff, S.C., and went to Woodruff High, where he played baseball and basketball. He graduated in 1998 before attending S.C. State. He graduated S.C. State is 2003.

He comes to West Charlotte after working at Garinger from 2005-08. He was assistant football coach and head baseball coach. This is his first athletics director job.
Hunter has been married to wife Andrea for three years. The couple has one child, Chandler. He is 2.

“I’m up for the challenge of trying to restart the West Charlotte roar,” Hunter said. “I want to help bring back some state championships here. Football hasn’t won one since ’95 and we’re trying to get one of those. Hopefully we can continue the success with boys basketball (which reached the state semifinals last season) and get restarted with the girls team (which won the 2009 state championship). We just want to get things up and running here. And I want to bring back the community invovlement with some other sports that have not been as succcessful as in past, like baseball, wrestling and swimming.”

Usually I would never mention this, but this article has way too many typos. I know it's Monday, but it would be helpful if the articles are reviewed before they are posted.

Hopefully, he nor the writer majored in English. Starting a sentence with "And" is not correct and will only encourage ebonics.

Langston Wertz has been with the Observer since 1988. Why don't you suckers get off the cat's back? Who are you, Mother Cabrine, you never made a mistake?

Seriously, we need an athletics director for schools now? Maybe this is part of the problem. You have gym teachers and they or other teachers can be coaches. You don't need an ahtletics director. I was shocked the other day when I heard about someone who was a defensive coordinator on a high school football team - that's a job that should be done by volunteer Dads.

We need to get a grip on reality.

^They've had athletic directors and defensive coordinators for years. What rock do you live under?

You guys are idiots! ALL high schools have athletics directors. In fact, even middle schools have athletics directors.

If you have no idea how the world of athletics works, please don't comment.

I hope he does a great job in promoting academics. Unfortunately, football Coach Flowers got blamed for the eligibility mess in '07-'08. I was a teacher there, and he did a great job! He had these young men dressed for success, well-spoken, and had an academics-first policy. Want to bring the "roar" back? Make these kids accountable for grades rather than changing the grades of your "stars" so they can play.
