Prep baseball shocker: No. 1 Ardrey Kell, No. 2 Christian both fall

Ardrey Kell and Charlotte Christian, two defending state champions, ranked No. 1 and 2 in the Observer's preseason Sweet 16 poll, both lost season openers Wednesday.

The No. 1 Ardrey Kell Knights lost in Huntersville to North Meck 7-3.

The Knights (0-1) got down 2-0 in second inning and rallied to close to 2-1 in the top of the fourth. North Meck scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Both teams finished with 11 hits.

North Meck's Aaron Spano got the win. Knights pitcher Ryan Butler got the loss.

-- In Marvin, Charlotte Christian blew a 4-1 lead in a 10-4 loss to Marvin Ridge. The Knights (0-1) gave up nine runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Joey Thomson was 2-for-3 hitting for Marvin Ridge (1-0).

ALSO: Lake Norman's Mariah McGuffie and Hannah Littlefield each had four RBI in a 24-1 softball win over Statesville. Lake Norman scored 15 runs in the first inning and nine in the second before the game was called for the mercy rule.

-- Marvin Ridge's Jordan Lugibihl had a homer and three RBIs in her team's mercy rule-shortened 12-0 win over South Meck. Caitlin Kurtz got the win.
