Marcus Surratt is West Charlotte's 5th football coach in 5 years

Marcus Surratt, 36 and single, is the new head football coach at West Charlotte.

He will be the Lions' fifth head coach in as many seasons.

"I can't comment on the more than one year thing. That's out of our control," Surratt said. "I don't think any coach wants to leave, but I want to change the perceptions and image over here a little bit. All of our kids are not going to do things the right way, but the majority are."

Surratt replaces Jeff Simpson who was removed from the job by West Charlotte principal Shelton Jefferies last month.

Since Pete Gilchrist resigned after the 2006 season, the Lions have had a coach every season. Maurice Flowers coached the team in 2007. Aaron Brand in 2008 and Simpson in 2009.

Despite the constant coaching turnover, the Lions have had success. Gilchrist's final team reached the N.C. 4A state championship game. Flowers' team reached the N.C. 4AA state semifinal. Brand won a ME-CA 7 conference championship.

Surratt's 2010 team will be talented as well, led by one of the nation's top rising senior running backs, Scoot Simmons. Simmons has committed to Duke.

Surratt said he wants the community to understand the Lions have good kids, but he doesn't want to change the way they play.

"I don't want to have the kids labeled," Surratt said. "But I always liked the aggressive nature of the kids that are here. I won't do a whole lot to change that, but we want to clean up the image a little bit. We're going to be competitive. They have been competitive but haven't done things the right way."

Surratt was the Lions defensive coordinator under Brand in 2008. He is Brand's cousin by marriage and Brand hired him from Lawndale Burns, where Surratt had worked as a defensive assistant for eight years. Surratt played at Boiling Springs Crest High from 1989-92 and briefly played in college at Carson-Newman before transferring to N.C. Central, where he did not play but earned a criminal justice degree.

He did not coach at West Charlotte this season but remained at the school as an exceptional children teacher.
