Hibriten, a regional "rookie," stops Hunter Huss, makes finals

GREENSBORO – Lenoir Hibriten’s boys had never made the N.C. Western regional tournament before this season.

Now, the Panthers have a chance to win one.

Hibriten pulled away from Gastonia Huss Thursday for a 53-44 Western regional championship win. The Panthers (20-9) will play Concord (26-5) in Saturday’s regional championship at 2 p.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center.

Hibriten busted open a tight game by outscoring Huss 18-8 in the fourth quarter as the Huskies (23-4) simply couldn’t find the basket. Huss shot 39 percent for the game and made 1-of-10 three-point attempts. Hibriten also outrebounded the taller Huskies 38-26.

Darius Lipford, who has committed to North Carolina to play football, led Hibriten with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Josh Dula struggled with his shot (6-for-18 overall, 2-for-10 in 3-point attempts) but had 14 points and four rebounds.

Huss, a junior dominated team, got 12 points and five rebounds from T.J. Wilson, 11 points and six rebounds from Jihad Wright and 11 points, four assists and three rebounds from point guard Jontavian Hall.
