Surprises highlight first round of private school playoffs

Some big surprises in Tuesday's first round of the N.C. Independent Schools playoffs:

-- Victory Christian's boys (17-18) seeded No. 9 upset No. 8 Metrolina Christian (16-9) 67-65. That was a mild surprise given the strong season Metrolina has put together. But No. 12 seed High Point Christian (13-17) taking down No. 5 Northside Christian (23-11) was about as big a first round surprise as we've had in the postseason, on the private or public side.

And High Point will play No. 13 seeded Gaston Day (10-17) in a quarterfinal Thursday. Gaston Day upset No. 4 seed Fayetteville Christian (26-6) 34-32.

In the same class, No. 11 Caldwell Academy upset No. 6 Fayetteville Academy.

That's a wild bracket.

REMATCH AGAIN: Davidson Day (22-6) has lost to United Faith three times this season, including last week in the finals of the SPAA conference tournament by 35. The team gets another shot in Thursday's quarterfinals at 5:30 p.m. at Forsyth Country Day in Lewisville.

REMATCH AGAIN II: Charlotte Latin held off Rabun Gap in its first round game Monday and gets to play Charlotte Christian for the third time in two weeks in Thursday's 5:30 p.m. quarterfinal at Greensboro Day. The Knights are No. 1 in the Sweet 16.
