Jason Fowler hired as football coach at Rocky River

Former East Mecklenburg offensive coordinator Jason Fowler, 32, is the first head football coach at Rocky River High, which will open in the fall.

Fowler's first team won't have any seniors. The Mint Hill school will wear uniforms of orange and brown. The team's name is the Ravens.

Rocky River principal Mark Nixon said Fowler was chosen over seven other finalists.

"He's well trained and he's innovative as an offensive coordinator," said Nixon, formerly principal at East Mecklenburg. "He's tough but positive with the kids and he knows how we run things from a school standpoint. He'll be essential in helping us shape our future. I think he's excellent."

Nixon said he hoped to name a boys' basketball coach later this week.

Fowler's hiring trims the number of available football openings in CMS. Head jobs are still open at Ardrey Kell, Hough, Independence, Myers Park and West Mecklenburg.

How can your nickname be "Ravens", and black isn't a primary school color? Who is the genius that decided that?

Mark Nixon is some Marketing Genius. Who decided that an anonymous "committee" is best equipped to decide those colors and mascot? He must be using the Obama method of keeping folks in the dark. Who in their mind would choose brown and orange and Ravens for a new school?? I hope he and his crew are better academics than sports marketers... geeez how could the other 6 choices been any worse??
