W. Charlotte reaches first regional since 2005

West Charlotte grabbed a 22-point halftime lead at Watauga and won its sectional final 93-78 Friday in Boone.

The Lions (21-9) advanced to next week's N.C. 4A Western regional, or state quarterfinal, Wednesday in Greensboro. The Lions haven't been this deep in the playoffs since 2005.

Butler girls get back to regional final

Butler's girls stopped reigning N.C. 3A champion Greensboro Dudley 54-49 Friday. Dudley moved up to 4A this season.

The Bulldogs, who lost to eventual state champ West Charlotte in the regional championship last season, goes back to the N.C. 4A Western regionals.

May May Dunovant had 17 points and five assists for the Bulldogs. All American Cierra Burdick had 13 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks.


Victory Christian reaches surprise state final

Victory Christian's boys came into the N.C. Independent School playoffs as a No. 9 seed. Now the Kings will try to win a state title.

One day after upsetting No. 1 seed Westchester Country Day, the Kings beat High Point Christian 73-43. High Point, a No. 12 seed, got to the semifinals by upsetting No. 5 Northside Christian in the first round.

Gaston Day, also in Victory's half of the bracket, was a No. 13 seed that upset No. 4 Fayetteville Christian in the first round.

Friday, Victory Christian 6-7 senior center had Josh Clyburn 17 points and eight rebounds. The Kings had five players in double figures.

Victory Christian (19-18) will play Concord First Assembly (28-1) in Saturday's 4 p.m. final at Forsyth Country Day.

-- Victory's girls (29-9) also reached the state finals, beating Fayetteville Christian 62-51. The Lady Kings will face Cary Christian (28-4) at 2 p.m. Saturday at Forsyth.

Chargers reach sixth straight girls final, get rematch with Hickory Grove
Providence Day's girls, the top seed in the N.C. Independent Schools 3A state tournament, advanced to their sixth straight state championship game with Friday's 43-27 win over Cary Academy in the semifinals.
The Chargers (23-6) will play Hickory Grove (24-3) in today's 6 p.m. final at Forsyth Country Day. Hickory Grove stopped Charlotte Christian 35-33 in its semifinal Saturday.

Hickory Grove upset Providence Day in the 2009 state final, ending the Chargers run of four straight state titles.

Lake Norman girls reach first N.C. Western regional

Lake Norman beat Winston-Salem Reynolds 67-63 in overtime at home Friday to qualify for its first regional playoff berth.

Kaitlin Walla had 20 points to lead Lake Norman.

Charlotte Catholic stops Concord, earns first regional berth since 1997

Charlotte Catholic's girls earned the school's second regional berth with a 66-63 win over Concord Friday. Ali Lane had 18 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Lauryn Kobiela had 22 points and 2 blocks. Shawn Marie Heiliger had 18 points and 6 assists.
