Bill Geiler hired as Indy football coach

Bill Geiler is going to be head football coach at Independence High School for the second time, the Observer has learned.

"Bill's the perfect fit for us," Independence principal Mark Bosco said. "He's great for the kids and he knows our athletic and academic programs. He's perfect for the future of our team."

Geiler, who has served as the school's interim coach since Tom Knotts resigned, was officially given the job Friday. Geiler coached the Patriots in 2004, when Knotts left for a season to take a job as an assistant coach at Duke.

Geiler led the Patriots to a 15-0 record and a state championship. Knotts came back in the 2005 season and Geiler left to become head coach at Indian Trail Porter Ridge. Geiler returned to the Patriots for the 2006 season and stayed until he retired in December 2008.

Geiler worked as a volunteer assistant at Providence Day for part of the 2009 season before he unretired and returned to Independence as defensive coordinator. He took over as interim coach after Knotts resigned in January to become head coach at Dutch Fork (S.C.).

"I've known Bill since 1994," Patriots athletic director Kelly Lewis said. "He's a good role model. He's the right guy."

Believe me, Mr. Geiler is fully capable of leading Independence back to a state championship with or without Mr. Knotts. I believe their coaching relationship has been based on the old addage "always surround yourself with the best people and you will be successful". Mr. Geiler has all the tools to be successful whether Knotts is there or not - case in point, he has already won a state championship without him!

Geiler will have great help. Aaron Brand, Josh Kranish, and Hal brown have been instrumental in the success of Indy. Indy has a bright future with these guys on the field.

Big Daddy Newsome's clock is ticking. He might stay one more year to see Lemay off then its time to cash in.

Coach Geiler is a good man and a legend in our eyes. Chase Allen, West Charlotte, Class of 1995. Great to see Coach Geiler doing well.

I think it was a wrong contract because this man lack of ideas, and that's unfair because that team deserves someone more experimented.
