On eve of Butler showdown, East Meck girls crack national top 50

One day before East Mecklenburg (18-1) plays Butler in one of the biggest girls basketball games in the state this year, the Eagles have moved into ESPN's national top 50 poll.

The Eagles are No. 49 this week.

East Meck is ranked No. 1 in the N.C. Preps state media 4A poll and No. 1 in the Observer's Sweet 16.

East's only loss is to 18-0 Parkview (GA), ranked No. 40 by ESPN. Parkview beat the Eagles 68-62 in Christmas tournament last month. Since then, East has won six straight.

Butler is No. 2 in the Sweet 16. The Bulldogs started the season nationally ranked by USA Today and ESPN. East Meck beat Butler 64-52 on Dec. 17.

Butler has won six straight games since dropping two straight in a Christmas tournament, including a 63-47 loss to Goose Creek (S.C.), which is No. 36 in ESPN's national poll.
