Culicerto is new head football coach at Vance

Vance High athletics director Rick Gardner said his school considered more than 70 applicants for its vacant head football job, but ultimately decided to promote five-year assistant Phil Culicerto to replace Jeff Simpson.

Simpson recently took the head job at West Charlotte.

“Coach Culicerto has a number of years experience coaching at the high school and college level,” Gardner said. “We feel fortunate we had someone of his caliber already here that knew the kids and their parents and the other members of the faculty and staff. He was the right fit for us.”

Culicerto played quarterback at Virginia Tech and was a graduate assistant under former Tech coach Bill Dooley. Culicerto was head coach at Division III Hampden-Syndney (Va.) College and a former Wingate assistant. He’s been Vance’s head baseball coach for four years, but stepped down from that position last fall. He will be the Cougars fast-pitch softball coach this spring.

Longtime CMS AD Davis dies at 65

For 30 years, H.K. Davis was a teacher, an athletics director and a coach in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. He was 65 when he died Thursday morning of cancer.

“H.K.’s contributions to student-athletes and school communities are hard to put into words,” said CMS system AD Vicki Hamilton. “All you have to do is walk onto the schools where he worked and you will see where he’s placed his mark.”

Davis graduated from Mount Holly High in 1962 and from N.C. State in 1967, where he won the award for most outstanding math and science student.

Davis took a job at Harding in 1967 and was named teacher of the year in 1972. He eventually became athletics director at Harding and later opened Providence High, as athletics director, in 1989.

“He loved being in charge,” his wife, Ann, said. “He spent 22 good years at Harding and always felt a special affection for the school and people there, but Providence was his baby, uniquely his own.”

Davis, twice named CMS athletics director of the year at Providence. He oversaw one of the state’s most successful athletic programs there and literally helped build new sports facilities at the school.

North Mecklenburg athletics director Leroy Holden, 64, said Davis impacted a lot of lives in a positive way.

“H.K.’s one of those guys that was meticulous about his job and took such pride in his job and you wouldn’t have wanted a better athletic director,” Holden said. “He’d been fighting this cancer for three or four years, but he’d always say, ‘There’s people worse off than me.’ He’d never let you know he was sick. He would always praise God for the blessing he’s had. I’ll miss him. He’ll be very deeply missed. He was a special, special man.”

CMS Conferences Drop Ticket Prices To Tournament Finals

Planning on going to Friday's CMS conference basketball tournament championship games?

You're going to pay a little less for admission.

The ME-CA 7, Queen City and Southwestern 4A conferences have jointly decided to discount ticket prices to Friday's finals from $7 to $5.

The doubleheader championships begin at 6:30 p.m. for the girls with the boys to follow. The Queen City finals are at Waddell; the ME-CA at Hopewell; and the Southwestern at Butler.

"We want to be sensitive to the economy," Southwestern 4A Conference President Terri Cockerham said, "and give our loyal fans a chance to attend the championship finals at a more manageable price. Many of our families face difficult times and all three conferences wanted to do something to assist our fan base and their families".

Cannon's Gross selected to WBCA All-Star Game

Concord Cannon senior and North Carolina recruit Krista Gross was selected as one of the nation’s top 20 girls’ players and will play in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association High School All-America Game.

Currently sidelined with a hip injury, Gross is expected to play in the game April 4 at Washington University in St. Louis. She was the only North Carolina player picked for the game, which is part of the WBCA National Convention at the NCAA Women’s Final Four.

“Krista’s WBCA selection is outstanding and well-deserved,” said Doug Maynard, Cannon’s athletics director. “Her commitment and dedication to athletics and academics is a great example of what it means to be a student-athlete at the interscholastic level.”

Gross was the first girl in Cannon history to sign with a Division I basketball program. The 6-foot wing has nearly 4,000 career points and chose North Carolina over Connecticut, Florida and Stanford. Two of Krista’s future teammates at North Carolina - Waltia Rolle and Tierra Ruffin-Pratt – were picked for the game.

Rock Hill wins S.C. wrestling title

Rock Hill High won the S.C. 4A dual-team wrestling championship in dramatic fashion Saturday.

The Bearcats beat Fort Dorchester 28-24 when Chase Ballard won the last of the day's 14 matches.

Ballard, a 145-pounder, defeated Ashley Brakelin 11-4, after falling behind 4-1 in the first period. The three-point decision preserved Rock Hill's 25-24 lead heading into Ballard's match.

It was Rock Hill's 16th wrestling state title, and first since 2000.

"I was a big underdog," Ballard told the Rock Hill Herald. "He was supposed to win and I don't think anyone in here besides me and my teammates expected me to win. I've worked hard, probably harder than him. I wanted it. It was mine."

"It's the greatest feeling I've ever had, but I've never been so nervous in my life. I've never got a state championship medal or ring, but I will now. It's so great to be a part of this."

Rock Hill finished 33-2, and Fort Dorchester was 25-2.

The conference includes Charlotte Christian, Charlotte Country Day, Charlotte Latin and Providence Day.

The Cannon girls, which won a state title last year, scored 257 points in the meet at Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center, which was 31 ahead of runner-up Country Day.

Ardrey Kell swimmers rising

Ardrey Kell's swimming program has come a long way in its' three years.

The first season, four Knights qualified for the state meet. They all rode with the coach in the same car.

Last year, 11 qualified.

This year, it's 22 swimmers. They'll need a bus.

Parent Ron Wagoner hosted a dinner for the swimmers, coach William Keith and assistants Wednesday, as part thank-you and part send-off. Wagoner's daughter Ashley was the N.C. 4A West regional champion in the 500-yard freestyle.

Keith, who swam for state power Providence High, was named Southwestern 4A coach of the year.

"We're making progress," he said.

Myers Park High names baseball coach

John Spencer was named baseball coach at Myers Park High on Wednesday.

Spencer, 29, a 1998 Independence High graduate, most recently worked at On Deck, a year-round baseball facility in Charlotte. He is a marketing teacher at Myers Park and became the sixth baseball coach in the school's 57-year history.

Spencer replaced Bobby Simmons, who resigned to enter the principal’s intern program. Simmons coached for three years, and directed the Mustangs (20-7) to the playoffs last spring.

Spencer was a four-year starter at catcher at Wingate (and All-American in 2003), and played professionally in the Frontier League for two years. In the offseason, he coached high school baseball in Missouri.

“We feel extremely fortunate to find a young talent like John to head our program," said Greg Clewis, Myers Park's athletics director. "He is a young man of high integrity and energy. We are excited about the potential of the program and look forward to watching John’s leadership style and passion for the game.”

Hopewell, Vance 1-2 in N.C. State basketball polls

On the eve of their meeting at Vance High Tuesday night, Hopewell and Vance have moved up into the top two spots in the N.C. Preps state media poll.

Hopewell (21-0) is atop the poll, followed by Vance (20-1). Hopewell beat Vance at home earlier this season and hopes to end Vance's 30-game home win streak. That would deliver an outright ME-CA 7 title. Hopewell shared it with North Mecklenburg last season.

If Vance wins tonight, it could grab at least a share of the title by winning at West Charlotte Thursday. Hopewell plays at rival North Meck Thursday.

Cary beats Butler in 4A wrestling final

Butler went as far as any high school wrestling team in Mecklenburg County history, but lost to host Cary 43-18 in the N.C. 4A dual-team final on Saturday.

The Bulldogs (21-4) were the second Mecklenburg team to reach the championship, since the state adopted a dual-team format in 1990. Independence also lost in the final to Cary in 1998. Both Independence and Butler were coached by Billy Puckett.

Butler finished 21-4.

The Bulldogs rallied with victories Friday against Northwest Guilford and Concord Robinson to reach the final against Cary, which was in its ninth straight state title match. Cary (36-0) won its third straight state championship.

Butler rallied to beat Concord Robinson 40-34 in the semifinal Friday in the final two weight classes, when Ranson Lee and Austin Long pinned their opponents.

Butler's other top wrestlers are Tom Puckett, Nate Charest and Dalton Cunningham.

CMS' Coaches Vs Cancer events Friday, Tuesday

Basketball coaches across Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools are trading their dress shoes for sneakers to support the American Cancer Society tonight and Tuesday. This is the fourth year CMS schools are supporting the fight against cancer with special Coaches vs. Cancer events at basketball games.

“We are so happy that our schools, student-athletes and coaches are supporting this worthy cause,” said Vicki Hamilton, director of athletics. “Coaches vs. Cancer events encourage our students to find creative ways to make a real difference as they raise money for the American Cancer Society.”

Providence High School men’s basketball coach Myron Lowery started the program at CMS four years ago. He lost his brother, Mark, to cancer in 1996 and was looking for a way to honor his memory. The program has grown every year and now all CMS high schools participate. Students sell paper basketballs in honor of friends and relatives affected by cancer, schools are encouraging staff and parents to donate and basketball players are making as many free throws as possible to collect pledges. Last year, CMS schools raised more than $12,000.

Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). It started in the early 1990’s and today, more than 500 college coaches and more than 100 high school coaches are involved. Coaches vs. Cancer has raised nearly $45 million to support the American Cancer Society.

“The Coaches vs. Cancer program is a vital, year-round link between the Society and the NABC that empowers basketball coaches, their teams and communities to join the fight against cancer,” said Jim Satalin, director of Coaches vs. Cancer. “The program draws from the personal experiences, community leadership, and the professional excellence of coaches nationwide to increase public awareness of the Society’s mission to save lives and prevent cancer, and to raise funds to fight the disease on a variety of fronts.”

Schedule of upcoming Coaches vs. Cancer games:

Friday, Feb. 6

* Mallard Creek at Hopewell (11530 Beatties Ford Rd., Huntersville)
* Harding University at Olympic (4301 Sandy Porter Rd.)
* Ardrey Kell at Providence (1800 Pineville-Matthews Rd.)

Tuesday, Feb. 10

* Charlotte Catholic at Phillip O. Berry (1430 Alleghany St.)
* Garinger at Harding University (2001 Alleghany St.)
* Hopewell at Vance (7600 IBM Dr.) *Donations received at this game have been designated for the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.

Simpson is new football coach at West Charlotte

Former Vance coach Jeff Simpson is the new football coach at West Charlotte.

Simpson, 36, resigned his position at Vance in December after four years at the school. Vance was 28-20 while he was there.

At West Charlotte, he'll replace Aaron Brand, who led the Lions to a 9-4 record and their first ME-CA 7 championship since 1999. Brand, named conference coach of the year, was fired after the season by principal John Modest, who said he was looking to go in a different direction.

West Charlotte athletics director Masanori Toguchi said the school received more than 50 resumes for the vacant coaching job and he interviewed 15 candidates, ultimately narrowing down to four finalists.

"We just thought that Jeff had that pedigree," Toguchi said. "He's got the experience and the knowledge to take West Charlotte to a good place."

Rendlemen leads East Lincoln into playoffs

In four years at East Lincoln, senior Keith Rendleman has starred on the football field, on the track and on the hardwood. Now, Rendleman can just focus on one sport: basketball.

“(Keith) is an exceptional athlete,” East Lincoln assistant basketball coach Chip Ashley said. “The amazing thing about him is that he has never been able to fully dedicate himself to basketball and he is still this good. We think his best days (in basketball) are still ahead of him.”

Rendleman, who will play basketball at UNC Wilmington next season, is averaging 22 points and 9.5 rebounds per game during the Mustangs 13-game win streak over the past two months. Rendleman, who became the school’s all-time leading scorer in January with over 1,300 points, has dominated in big game like last week’s 82-79 win over Cherryville where he had a career-best 33 points and 15 rebounds.

“We have come to expect him to do things like that,” Ashley said, of his performance last week. “I think right now, we’re focused on finishing this season strong. (Keith) will be a huge part of that.”

Rendleman and Ashley hope they can keep this going into March. The Mustangs lost in the state quarterfinals last year after a school record 24-7 mark. Right now, the Mustangs sit at 17-4, 12-1, good for first place in the Southern Piedmont going into the final week of the regular season.

NBA talent on display in prep game

When Word of God Christian Academy visits Ravenscroft School today at 7 p.m., weather permitting, fans will get a chance to see at least four Division I basketball recruits on one court, in one game.

"You've probably got three or more future NBA players," Word of God coach Levi Beckwith said.
He was referring to the Ravens' Ryan Kelly and the Holy Rams' John Wall and C.J. Leslie.

"This is probably the first time in the city of Raleigh that you have that many guys on the court at the same time that may go to the NBA," Beckwith said.

Wall is considered by recruiting experts to be the top senior in the nation. The 6-foot-4 point guard has not decided where he will attend college next year.

Then there's his teammate, Leslie, a junior forward listed at 6-9. He has verbally committed to N.C. State.

Beckwith said other Holy Rams drawing Division I interest are sophomore guard Bishop Daniels, junior center Stephon Drane and junior forward Montel Baines.

Ravenscroft (21-5) features two senior big men, Kelly at 6-10 and Matt Wilson at 6-11.

Kelly, a senior, has signed with Duke, and Wilson is headed to UNC-Wilmington.

It's rare for two private schools operating in the same city to have this much home-grown talent, Beckwith noted.

"The Triangle is very well represented in the number of Division I players that it's producing," Ravens coach Kevin Billerman said, mentioning Middle Creek's Garrius Adams (Miami) and Panther Creek's Earnest Ross (Auburn). "It opens up the city of Raleigh to seeing a very high caliber of basketball."

Today's game is a rematch. Ravenscroft won 68-59 on Jan. 7 at Word of God. Wall had 17 points in the game, below his 21 points-per-game average.

Since then, Word of God (15-6) hasn't lost in eight games, and Wall has averaged 31.8 points per game in the Holy Rams' past six.

"He's developed a certain attitude and mentality that's needed to beat certain teams," Beckwith said.

Beckwith said Wall uses his speed in transition to get through defenses designed to stop him.
"So he's a lot harder for you to get to, even if you have your defense set up," said Beckwith. "He's coming down and going full steam ahead."

Word of God can win, Beckwith said, the team keeps its focus and "makes sure that we're not trying to impress who we're playing in front of. We can't let that take us out of our element."
Billerman looked back to the first game.

"We made our free throws and key defensive stops," he said. "We were able to control the game at the end."

Guarding Wall with man-to-man defense the majority of the time is the game plan.
"You try to keep him in front of you, but it's virtually impossible to do," Billerman said.
Both teams played in Raleigh's GlaxoSmithKline Holiday Invitational in December but didn't face each other.

But this game should have about the same amount of buzz around it, with a large crowd in attendance.

Ravenscroft is preparing for a big crowd. The A.E. Finley Activity Center has a capacity of 1,200, and tickets are on a first-come, first-serve basis. The doors open at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $5. The junior varsity game starts at 4 p.m.

Like the Holiday Invitational, once the venue has reached capacity, no one will be allowed to enter unless someone leaves the building. There will be extra security to monitor the entrances.
