Notes and scores from busy Thursday night of hoops

-- Mooresville's boys basketball team upset Mallard Creek 59-56 in its 4A opener earlier this week behind 19 points from Shawn Lester. Thursday night, Mooresville upset West Charlotte 70-66. The Lions (8-3, 1-2 I-MECK) lost for the second time in three games and play rival Harding tonight at the Grady Cole Center.

West Charlotte played without leading scorer J.T. Terrell, who served the first of a four-game suspension.

-- Two great games in town last night. East Meck girls stopping Butler and Hopewell winning at Lake Norman in two Sweet 16 1-2 battles.

Here's a column on East Meck girls star Monet Tellier who is leaps and bounds better than what she was last season.

-- The night's other big upset was Myers Park holding Ardrey Kell to under 40 in a 48-38 win. The Mustanags got 17 from Griffin Shaw and held Knights' leading scorer Justin Cheek to only four. Ardrey Kell plays a big game at rival Marvin Ridge tonight.

-- Morganton Freedom girls basketball Chelsea Connelly (St Leo Fla.) and Brittany Roberts (St. Andrews Presbyterian) have signed with colleges. Connelly averages 15 points for Freedom (5-3, 1-0 SMAC) which won its conference opener 59-56 over Shelby Tuesday and plays Burns at home tonight. Connelly had 14 in Thursday's 45-30 win over Alexander Central.

-- Freedom's boys won 56-54 over Alexander Central when Bryant Clay hit the game-winning 3-point shot at the buzzer.

-- Tonight's scheduled St. Stephens-Hibriten game has been postponed. The teams will play Jan. 6 at St. Stephens. There will also be no practice.

-- More than 1,500 people filled Lake Norman's gym for the 1-2 battle between Sweet 16 leader Hopewell and Lake Norman. If there's a better conference than the I-MECK in North Carolina, someone holler and let us know. Five of the top eight boys teams in our poll are from that league.

-- Cherryville will play with Bishop McGuinness, Mount Airy, Stouth Stanly, Murphy, Hiwassee Dam, Mitchell and North Wilkes in the MLK Day Great Eight 1A Invitational at Lenoir Rhyne Jan. 18.

-- Jontavius Hall had 27 for Gastonia Huss in a 70-54 win over Kings Mountain Thursday.
