Best Sweet 16-era basketball teams/players ever?

The Observer's Sweet 16 basketball and football polls debuted in 1984. This is the 25th anniversary for the rankings, which have been a hit for the newspaper.

Last week, we published the top football teams and top football players of the past 25 years, the Silver Anniversary poll and teams.

Today, we published some of the top memories of the past 25 years of Sweet 16 basketball.

We are putting together our lists of the top teams and players in girls and boys basketball of the past 25 years and will release those lists later this week.

Wondering if there's anybody or any teams we should consider?

The 1985 & 86 West Caldwell Girls Basketball Team. Arguably the greatest team in NCHSAA history. Back-to-back State titles, a 50 game winning streak and several future college players. They have to be #1 on your list.

The 2008-09 Hopewell Boys Basketball team and season is a good one; Meca-7 conf champs, undefeated regular season, #1 ranked team in N.C. during the season, finishing ranked No. 2 and 25 nationally with a 28-1 record. NCHSAA Scholar Team with highest b-ball team GPA in the state.

I know that sweet 16 is only from '84 on, but the best team ever in NC bball history is the '70-'72 S. Meck teams. 3 state championships in a row and i believe they only lost 2 or 3 games over that span, if that. Not sure the record of the '70 team, but the '71 and '72 teams only lost one game over two years. That loss was to W. Charlotte. My father was the PG on those teams and said the only reason they lost that game was because it was at W. Charlotte and the fans were shooting bb guns at them all game. As soon as the game was over, they ran out of the gym, got on the bus and left right away.

If you are picking individual players, you have to include Andrea Stinson from North Meck. I only saw her as a member of the Charlotte Sting, but the stories that are told about her exploits in the '86 and '87 seasons are tremendous. During those 2 years the team won one State Championship, and their only loss the other year was in the State Championship final.
