Tuesday's top performers

Hopewell’s volleyball team swept Mallard Creek 25-22, 25-10, 25-22 in an I-Meck 4A match Tuesday.

The Titans (9-1) were led by Adrian Eppley’s 34 assists, Chanel Nelson’s 12 kills, Hannah Early’s 14 service points and six kills, Brie Levitzki’s 21 digs, and Hunter Meakin’s 17 digs and 13 service points.

-- Charlotte Catholic maintained its ME-GA 7 3A/4A lead with a 25-8, 25-9, 25-6 victory against Garinger. The Cougars (8-5) are 5-0 in conference.

-- North Mecklenburg improved to 10-0 with a 25-4, 25-15, 25-7 sweep against Vance. The Vikings’ top players were Blair Atkinson (13 assists), Ali Cooke (six kills) and Cameron Van Hoy (five kills).

-- Myers Park (9-2) swept South Mecklenburg 25-15, 25-20, 25-16 to remain atop Southwestern 4A with a 5-0 record.

Boys’ soccer

-- Butler upset reigning state champion Myers Park 2-1 in the Southwestern 4A opener. Myers Park, No. 3 in the N.C. 4A poll, is 4-2-1 after going unbeaten last season. Butler (6-1-2) extended its winning streak to four matches.

Kyle Searles’ team-leading ninth goal in the 20th minute gave Butler a 1-0 lead. The game settled into a defensive battle until the final two minutes. Myers Park’s Casey Caronis tied the game, and it appeared headed into overtime.

But Butler senior Stephen Grassel knocked a header past the outstretched hands of Myers Park goalkeeper Josh Brown for the winning goal with 15 seconds left.

-- Ulises Luna scored three goals in United Faith’s 5-2 victory at Gaston Day. Steven Keretses and Jordan Straight also scored for the Falcons (4-2-1).

-- Kevin Scott’s four goals helped Hickory Grove (9-1) defeat Metrolina Christian 8-1.

-- Mooresville’s Billy Nantz scored two goals as Mooresville beat Vance 5-3 in an I-Meck 4A match. The Blue Devils (8-1-1, 2-0 conference) also got goals from Grant Gowing, Ty Haddock and Nic Norment. Jeremy Dennis scored two goals for Vance (7-2, 0-1).

Girls’ tennis

-- Myers Park (6-0), the reigning N.C. 4A champion, dominated a 9-0 victory against Mallard Creek. Each Mustangs singles player - Grace Baker, Anna Rickenbaker, Jessica Perez , Kelsey Sherck, Debolina Banerjee and Amy Bell - won in straight sets and didn’t lose more than two games in any set.
Myers Park’s depth was on display as six different players swept the three doubles matches - Emily Carpenter, Samantha Forlenza, Olivia Turnbull, Megan Early, Paige Stover and Stephanie Cameron. The Mustangs have won 24 straight matches.

Cross country

Haylee Dawe won the girls’ 5K race by one minute to help Charlotte Latin wins the girls’ title at a Charlotte Independent School Athletic Association meet at McAlpine Park. Her time of 19 minutes, five seconds was well ahead of runnerup Katue Lonergan of Providence Day (20:05). Latin edged Providence Day by one point for the team title. Both had four runners in the top 10.

Concord Cannon’s Tim Gruber won the boys’ race in 16:26, and Providence Day won the boys’ title.
