Indy, Butler 1-2 in AP State football poll

Mecklenburg County rivals Independence and Butler rank 1-2 in the Associated Press N.C. poll, as voted by a statewide panel of media members.

Independence is No. 1, Butler No. 2.

Mallard Creek, which lost to Independence by one point, is No. 8.

Among the 16 media members, Independence got nine first place votes and Butler 6.

Nationally, Independence is No. 23 in the National Prep Poll and No. 40 in ESPN's national poll. ESPN ranks Butler No. 48.

In this week's Sweet 16, Butler is No. 1 and Independence No. 2.

Why is Independence always identified as being in Charlotte when it is actually in Mint Hill?
