Geiler returning to coach at Independence

Longtime Independence assistant coach and defensive coordinator Bill Geiler is back with his old team. Geiler, 54, retired from Independence last winter. He was a volunteer coach at Providence Day until Thursday when Patriots head coach Tom Knotts called and asked for help.

Knotts planned to coach the Patriots defense this season and let assistant Aaron Brand, who was West Charlotte’s head coach in 2008, run the offense. But Brand has been suspended with pay by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, pending the outcome on an ongoing investigation. Last week, Brand was charged by the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s office with felony larceny of more than $1,000 of West Charlotte property. He has hired local attorney Joe Ledford.

Brand did not coach in the Patriots first game against Mallard Creek Aug. 21 and hasn’t been with the team since. Knotts, who also lost longtime offensive coordinator Jon Strong, was left handling the bulk of the coaching duties. He said after Friday’s 49-12 win over Hopewell that he couldn’t remember working this hard. His voice was nearly gone. That’s why he called Geiler.

Geiler agreed to return and got Hardin's blessing to leave Providence Day. Geiler coached in the Chargers win over Victory Christian Friday and started with Independence Monday.

“I’m excited to be back,” Geiler said. “You get a phone call for Tommy, and for him to say he really needs me to come back and needed some help; how do you say no to somebody who’s like a brother?”

Geiler hopes to be re-hired as a teacher. While he waits, he must rework a defense that gave up more than 500 yards and 41 points to Mallard Creek but looked better in last week’s win over Hopewell. Independence plays at S.C. power Rock Hill South Pointe Friday. South Pointe, the defending S.C. 4A champions, has won 16 straight games.

Geiler’s first move with his new defense was to make it uniform. Players had to remove shields on helmets and towels this week. He wants everyone to look the same, to play as one.

“I’m watching and getting back into it slow,” Geiler said. “There’s not a lot of holes on defense, just kids not understanding their roles. My job is to make them understand. My whole thing is about discipline, and doing what you’re asked to do. I asked them to take off that stuff and they did it. That was a good start.”

I feel bad for the players he left. How can Geiler preach discipline and team when he bails on kids after one week?

He's a winner. That's for sure. Certainly area coaches will take note of this news.

I still can not believe Porter Ridge (Union County) let him go over a comment made in jest. Best head coach they have had, hands down.

Geiler is not the best head coach Porter Ridge has had...hands down. The current coach...Coach Hardin is the best they have had. He brings out the best in his players with "Class". He has already begun to turn that program around. His kids are disciplined and play hard...a true sign of respect for their coach.

The REAL story here is WHY BRAND needs to hire a lawyer. What did he do? They ran him off from WC, because of his character and attitude. I wonder why they didn't post this online? hate to say I TOLD YOU SO. As for Geiler, he's better than Baby Hardin. I have much respect for his Father, I played for him at WC. But Geiler is better HAND DOWN. He has a GWOP of experience over Hardin.

everyone says kids shouldn't change schools,,but now you have a coach that does it after the season starts,,so what does that say to the kids, TK should play the hand he has, not go get a coach thats already at another school,,can't believe CMS allowed this, Oh,,i can believe it

There are some idiots on here. Geiler was getting no or little pay to be linebacker coach at PD while he looked for a full time teaching job (PD didn't offer one). Do you all realize hs coaches make about 1k a year? He is going back to Indy for a promotion to coordinator and to get a teaching job, which is 98 percent of the pay for a coach. Besides, football at PD is below even lacrosse.

In CMS that 800 bucks after taxes may pay your gas to and fro if you lucky. Calculated out you make about 22 cents per hr for the 4 mos of football and forget the spacey love of game crap talk plus teacher pay sux. Go ask college or pro coaches if they will work for nothing.
Coaches should at least make the minimum wage and have too clock in and out.

Praying for Coach Brand & his family, as well as the players that are affected by this non-sense! Its clear that the whole "headset larceny" is anomisity! Why did they not just ask him if he had it??????....in all that you do, remember what goes around, must come right back around!!!!

Yea you keep right on praying and what goes around definitely is coming around starting with Brand. He is getting what he deserves and it looks to me that he is the disgrace and he had the nerve to tell a football player that has since moved on that he is a disgrace to his race.....well who is really the disgrace....stealing...surely he wouldn't have been arrested if there was not some type of evidence....now he knows what it feels like at least a taste of what it feels like. Vengence is mine says the Lord and the reckoning for all the others is in the making....why all the hype with these Anthony Carruthers, Anthony Shorts, Nate Charests when they can't even get scholarship offers at the next level when we have Victor Hampton who has been hated on mistreated and all the like not have to even step on the field his senior year and still having schools recruit him getting offers...why because like tom Knotts said himself this young man is a Sunday afternoon player and no matter how hard they have tried to take it away they can't because they didn't give him his talent and they can't take it away... I give him big ups because the average kid would get discouraged and hang their head but this kid has moved on and is taking visits as I see on those recruiting websites. go Victor not everyone is hating on you. There are just as many who wish you the best and can't wait to see what school you decide to play at. You have several choices even new ones I have heard despite how the coaches have tried to blackball you.
